Overstatement? Maybe.
Already a thread? Mostly.
But this. This kind of new Financial arms race from the private sector is going to derail many programs and bolster others. And it will have nothing to do with amateurism or play on the field. It will be about which community is most able to pony up the dough for prospective recruits - now in a legalized manner.

It sucks

Alabama pays their football coach probably 6x what we pay ours lmfao but now the financial arms race is going to change everything as we know it
I believe I said that about a week ago.

Here's a question: why do we still have amateurism?

What if I told you amateurism is an antiquated system that was used mostly to comply with Olympic requirements. When that went away in the 90's we continued it's use for no other purpose to keep the money and power in place as it was. Amateurism was bound to collapse sooner or later.

Just my theory.

The below quote sums it up
"I'm not looking to profit from this," Lambert said. "I want to try to bring people together and make our team better. I've got too many Gator and Seminole friends that have been s----ing on me for the last 20 years. I want to reverse it."

I know I'm going to get slammed for saying this, but I think it's part of the draw of College Sports vs professional sports. Once it becomes just another professional sport, why not just focus on the best players in the world in the NBA/NFL instead of the minor league equivalent?

which is not the intent of NIL.

I agree with you. It's why no one cares about semi-pro football or the myriad other leagues that have popped up.

This may actually motivate Congress to get involved to level the playing field. NIL is not going away but it has to be equally applied at all schools. There is a reason there is a salary cap in professional sports. Something will have to be done eventually.

Because as fans we ultimately root for our team’s laundry regardless who wears it.

I think in short order NIL considerations will be 1 or 2 on a recruit’s selection criteria. A real disadvantage for some. But more a real advantage for others.
Seems like the NCAA doesn’t even have a voice in this.
Who’s going to govern this thing now that it’s operable? Small market, non-name brand schools are going to be diminished unless deep pocket alumni step up.
There will likely be some kind of winnowing shakeout.
Does SU remain a player in all this potential realignment?

Oh me. I know it’s just sports. But, like many of you I’ve grown a fond attachment to our Orange over 6 decades.
Well I’ll always have Hogan’s Heroes reruns. They never change.

What will the NCAA do when a player scores a TD and reps one of their brands in an endzone celebration? I don’t think there’s anything they CAN do about it. That’s going to look weird and crass.

had the universities NOT sold the merchandise and exploited the popularity of certain athletes, perhaps amateurism may have stayed longer. the argument that a free education was payment does not compute in this greedy day and age. the student athlete was exploited which has led us to this.

I bet you don't see one excessive celebration flag this year.

I agree - the NCAA and its member institutions created the system and sat by idly as it crashed. No sympathy for either party. I also don't see how the government getting involved makes this better unless your program is like ours and wants some control so we don't just fade away.

The "salary cap" is the scholarship and scholarship limits per school. Even playing field for all with that.

The NIL money is just endorsement money on top of everything else. Can't stop that with this new rule.

The government won't get involved as there is nothing to get involved in. College sports have changed now. And it has drastically changed for mens football and basketball. You will have a handful of powerhouses with big financial banking behind them buying up the best recruits and paying kids to transfer to the big money schools. And the rest of the schools in America outside of those Top 20 will play games for pride and fun and regional rivalries but with no shot at winning a national title or anything or being able to recruit a superstar player.

You will have about a POWER 20 schools and everyone else will be like the Ivy League in time.

with what Miami has done with the blanket NIL, i can't wait to see if any of our tech oligarchs actually care about college sports in a way they'll just say we're donating 100mm to the school and split up amongst the players.

You're pining for something that never was.
While it's true that the simon-pure aspects of CF have been eroded over the years, there still exists a hearty portion of tradition, spirit and elements of amateurism in the sport. I prefer these motivations in my CF. Call it pining, but I still see a lot of student-athlete in our guys. To me this is what differentiates college sports from the pros. Some great stories of kids coming here and making a difference and developing as people. The pro side is necessarily a business. Not so much on the college side at the player level. I don't know...I'm drawn to it from my playground and school days. Wish it wasn't evaporating.

My larger point is that injecting the NIL dynamic into CF will create more of a free for all, money grab to a far greater extent than anything that goes on today - at least at the player level - and recruits will become ever more mercenary. At the coaches level it's already nuts.

PS: I find it a little strange when posters say DB is coaching for his job come the Ohio game. He may be, but it's a very soft landing with the golden-est of parachutes should our beloved coach get sacked.

This is *exactly* how it is in football now, and to an extent basketball too..

But now, the schools less inclined to cheating or less open to bagmen will be able to compete too. How many rich alum/booster/fans wanted to help but thought the underbelly a touch to unseemly?

Recruit A is a 4* kid from a super poor part of FL. He's got ability and wants to help out his Grandma who raised him. He'd be looking for a bag, or enticed by a bag - even though it felt a little weird to accept. Now, all programs are coming to him saying "hey, we have a bunch of opportunities for you and it's all legal. Plus you liked it here more than x school because they have the thing your interested in"

Again, people who are anti-NIL should examine what they thought the previous system was and who it worked for
