It is without debate that we are going through a down period of SU basketball. The following numbers offer a comparison of other top tier programs and how our current 6 year stretch (not counting this year as we are not done) compares with those teams 6 worst consecutive years. I am showing overall record during that 6 year period, # of losing seasons during that 6 year period (column 5) and also the additional losing seasons since 1985 (column 6). NCAA tournament record, NCAA bids in that 6 year period and highlights.

A couple observations:
  • Kansas is consistently excellent
  • everyone but Duke and Cuse have gone through a lot of coaches - one could argue when the other programs struggled they made changes
  • Our down period is pretty good compared to everyone else
  • Only Cuse, Kansas and Arizona have avoided losing seasons
  • Kadary should play more

Nice chart, but yeah, this is the takeaway. SU still has a transition to go through. And I'm not sure how many schools don't miss a beat going from a HOF long term coach to the next successful coach. Wisky, but they even had a down year, just on a year delay. Arizona between Lute and Miller had two other coaches, but they managed to avoid a losing season.

You can't compare Wisconsin to Syracuse. They had two NCAA appearances before 1994. They were basically Northwestern or Rutgers. But otherwise, that's a great point. Maybe JB is doing his successor a favor by being so aggressively mediocre. There's not a ton to live up to right now like there would have been had he retired in 2016.
