Going into the inaugural ACC season, I really wonder who will be our fiercest rival going forward into the next century...
A rivalry to replace Georgetown and Uconn, since I don't feel a nonconference foe can be a "most hated rival."
Also, I would like that top rival to transcend just one sport; in other words a team we could hate in football, basketball, maybe even lacrosse...
It would be nice if we had a proximity rival which could be that team, but the Colgate days are gone I guess... I live in L.A., and cross town rivalries like USC/UCLA or Duke/UNC are very intense...
The last criteria would be that the other school would consider us their most hated foe as well...
So some schools would immediately be incompatible:
Duke/UNC
Notre Dame - Too national a program, with already established rivals?
Louisville - Great potential, but Kentucky rivalry would always overshadow...
Pitt - maybe, but Back Yard Brawl with WV may overshadow...
As for me, BC or Miami seem to be the most likely candidates. Hopefully Miami can keep the momentum in their BB program...

Louisville...end of the day we're most competitive with them. BC cashes checks and Pitt, meh...

Could've been Maryland, but Purdue beckoned.

Maryland would've always hated UVA more.

BC is the best shot but they suck. What about Va Tech?

Maybe, I really hate Hokies... Even several years hasn't changed that. Plus they stole our ACC invite...
But they have that intrastate rivalry with UVA...

absolutely the ville. acc can now have two major rivalry week games will duke unc and cuse - ville

I think it has to be from the BE wing of the conference. Someone w whom we already have some history. Louisville seems obvious right now but Miami seems like a possibility. It may also be different based on the sport.

It is definitely Louisville. Understand the Kentucky thing but they have been the best (and most frustrating) games recently. Or, believe it or not, NC State. We have developed some hate with them recently as well. They seem to be itching to develop something with someone other than Duke/NC since they are so ingrained with each other. BC is a non factor unfortunately

Well, at least we are off to a good start against the Wolfpack...
BB win in their place...
Beat them out for a few FB recruits lately...

Kentucky looks at Louisville like its their little brother sorta like North Carolina looking at NC State. While Louisville is infinitely better than NC State, Kentucky will never hate Louisville as much as Louisville will hate Kentucky. For some reason Kentucky doesn't have a primary rival because Indiana isn't in there conference and Florida and Tennessee care more about Football than Basketball. With North Carolina and NC State the Tarheel fans look down at NC State and while they don't like the Wolfpack they are more annoyed by the fanbase than hate the team, and Tarheel fans hate Duke more as a result.

I think our ACC rivals will be Boston College. Pitt, and Louisville. Boston College just because I think our Northeast alums will own Conte Forum and if we lose games to them they will be What losses, Pitt because we have played them for 30 years now and we hate their thugball tactics, and Louisville because we played them 10 times since 2009 our most frequent opponent of that time frame and they seem to have gotten the best of us recently, and since both teams have been good its developed into a good rivalry.

Good point about SU alumni in BC's turf...
Football seems a little blah against BC,
BB days in the 90's, when Otis Hill's cousin Donya Abrams was on the BC squad were pretty good...
Do the Eagles even play lacrosse?
Should we spend some of that ACC money on outfitting a hockey team?

Not sure Louisville/Cuse would ever get nasty. We don't travel well to each others place. Plus I'm not sure the hate is there...I actually respect Louisville for their program building...plus both cities are kinda similar. Louisville's fan base seems to have mutual respect for us, also...I predict this will be a rivalry but one built on mutual respect...unlike what we had with Rutgirls and UConn.

Maybe that's the ACC way, Duke/UNC rivalry while heated seems to be based on mutual respect.
Unlike BE rock fight rivalries a la us with Gtown/Uconn/Ru...

Louisville is our nemesis now (IMO) but that's the fun of joining a new conference - new targets for our scorn are right around the corner.
In the end, I think Clemson is going to be a good football rival.
Hoops - we'll have a cornucopia of flopping a$$holes to root against.

They are really pissed about us taking over their BBall arena too. We cheer too loudly and use foul language there.

I've always enjoyed the series with you guys and I can't wait to continue it in the ACC. Just wish we were joining next year instead of 2014...

Let BC hoops and FB produce a .500 season, and maybe we can talk. They're just so irrelevant.

Agree with most here - has to be Louisville. I feel the NC St hate of SU, but let's face it - they're pretty irrelevant too.

This whole thread is fallacious as its based upon the idea you can create a rivalry by wishing it would occur.

That's not the way it works.

Rivalries are either due to proximity or by a long history of meaningful games.

We aren't really geographically close to any school. And we are just starting up in the ACC.

We do have somewhat of a history with BC. More of one with Pitt. But there have been very few important games / title races with either of them.

VT, in football, was getting there prior to 2003. Some big games between the schools.

I don't see UL as a rival. Too different a school.

It should become clearer in the next 5 or 10 years, And the answer may be that we really have no real rival in the ACC as not great contest for supremacy develops.

In Lacrosse, it could be UVA. Maryland is leaving the Conference. We have a history of playing these guys very tough ... a bunch of one goal differential games. Or maybe ND.

Louisville is our biggest rival now after our recent history.Pitt is 2nd. BC is Rutgers - hard to get excited about playing them. All basketball comments. Lacrosse will have a number of possible rivals due to the quality of the league. Although, it's still lacrosse and the general fanbase is not going to get too worked up about any rivalry. As for football, Syracuse still needs IMHO to prove itself relevant on a consistent basis before any big rivalries develop. Let's Go Orange!

Yes, this will play itself out organically over the next 100yrs of ACC action...
ND, in my opinion, is the "brass ring" - a national program that's relevant in all collegiate aspects...
I would love to see a deep rivalry develop with them across all sports.
You know, Orange versus Green, Catholic versus Protestant...
BB and lacrosse I could see that happening very easily, but in football, I think ND arrogance would never let them see us as a equal, unless we can consistently start to win big games again...

Someday, maybe 15 years from now when some team beats SU, their loudmouth coach will say "The Carrier Dome is officially closed!" and then it's on.-VBOF

I wish it will only be in 15yrs...:-)
Unfortunately, I think, the Carrier Dome stays around for many many years...
C'mon guys, let's start contributing for that new retractable roof dome stadium on south campus...
