Is this a tournament team?

Possibly / maybe.

Saying anything with definitive certainty in the portal era is difficult.

its a tournament caliber roster - they got everyone they wanted

i look at it like this: what would be the most annoying outcome of this season?...

for me it would be sneaking into the tourney in the play-in game...one of the last teams in ...bc the team underperfomed relatitve to talent and lack of coaching

thereby there would be an argument to keep red even though the team basically flopped

for me its not just toureny or bust...its solidly in the tourney or bust...no excuses

i dont actually think it will come to that...
I don’t think a play-in game would be considered underperforming. Consensus now, based on this roster, is they’ll be a bubble team that doesn’t make the Big Dance, but makes NIT.

There seems to be a good quantity of decent players - depth at all positions. While there are several questions to be answered, I believe the biggest one will be: Can Autry turn that depth into an internal competition for playing time, with that competition being based not just on scoring, but on defense and rebounding on EVERY possession? Can he light that fire in the players to do that? Suffice it to say, IMHO, that's something he needs to improve on as a coach and as a leader.

Having a good point guard will make a difference, if you want the ball in position to score. You had better not be a sieve on defense. George didn't transfer in to lose games because you don't stop the other team.

tell me 25 backcourts better than george and starling

freeman is in many mock draftboards as a PF

the incoming recruiting class is highly touted

the talent is there to be a solid tourney team...not sneak in via the play-in game

no excuses

How can you say with any certainty that this is a tournament team just by reading the new players bios? They haven't practiced that long, haven't played in front of anyone at the JMA. I think we should wait until they are in front of thousands of people, playing together before making any judgment about this team and whether they are capable of making the dance.

This is the key to the season. Good post!

We’ll be a tournament team this year if:

Kyle proves to be a legitimate defensive anchor in the middle

We play better team defense which includes better defense at every position on the floor.

JJ takes 4-5 less shots a game to let Donnie and Kingz take a heavier load.

We escape the injury bug we always seem to hit lately.

Eh, we outrebounded Pitt by SEVENTEEN and lost this past season...it's all about defense and defensive intensity.
There was no dog on that team. Pitt was anomaly.

Kyle is going to be a fantastic defensive piece. He'll be able to switch on the pick and roll and also provide help defense.

Length, athleticism, and shot blocking. I think he'll pair well with Donnie in the frontcourt.

Rebounding is the last act of defense. Don't get the rebound, and you're still playing defense.

...but only if he puts forth the effort.

Fennell had hottest hand in the second half and they went away from him the last 6 minutes as Germany shut down the comeback

He had a couple very good games from three.

Good list. Nailed it.
