I go to SU games for selfish reasons. My kid likes football, but no question, it is something we are doing for me. My 6 year old gets bored by halftime, especially in 0-56 losses. And how often do you get to see the #2 team in the country in a classic gameday environment like Doak?

I also coach my kid's teams as well. Too many experiences where the other volunteer coach knew nothing about the sport in question. My kid loves it. I love it.

However, my kids game is at 10:30 in Orlando. Wouldn't get out until 11:30. If I flew, I wouldn't make Tallahasee until 3. So I'd miss the before game tailgate, which I'm sure will be much more fun than the post game tailgate. And tailgating is really half the fun of the game.

My 1-game replacement coach actually knows more about hoops than I, so I'm not worried about that. But, I'm still bummed. Any other parents ever been in the same boat?

Swish...not quite apples to apples but my 6 year old plays organized soccer every Saturday and always bumps into game time. You can't always live your life on what ifs but I can guarantee that you won't regret missing an event like this but missing spending time with your kid, you bet. We can't live our life with our heads in the clouds but life is fragile and you never know when will be the last time. Hope my sage advice isn't taken the wrong way but just my 2 cents. :)

Swish-
I've been in your spot for the last 15 years. I coached all 3 of my kids in soccer, basketball and baseball all the way until high school and then some AAU basketball after that. During that time, I bascially gave up golf and all other hobbies (incuding SU sports trips) to coach the kids teams (except for 1 trip per year). My kids are late in high school now and I no longer coach and have plenty of time to pay golf and go see SU play. I do not regret those choices one bit, the kids are only young once. Cuse will be at Talahassee in 2 years. My advice is definately coach the kids game. Go late to FSU if you want.

Definitely coach your kid's game...for both of you. He'll remember the times you chose him over doing something else. In a couple of years, he will probably appreciate going to games with you more- especially knowing how you put him first.

I never miss a kids game for an SU sporting event and that goes for all SU sports. Ever.

Part of the deal when you blew it inside her is dealing with conflicts in your personal life.

I cant even watch the FSU or Pitt games because my daughter has all day soccer tourneys during the gametimes.

Been in this boat many times. The last thing you want is to have your kid hit a half court shot to win the game and you not be there. SU football will be there long after your kids are done playing sports. Just my opinion of course.

beauty of the new conference is that SU will be playing at Doak every other year from now on - and hopefully going forward won't be as outgunned as this year.

I went to the Ga Tech game - it wasn't fun. Agree with the others - coach your kid's game and watch it on TV this time.

Alternative view.

He's six, it's one game, it's an unique event as you pointed out. You are going to have a lot more games to coach in the future.

Agree with others, kids come first. I've missed my share of games.

I'd have to coach my kid's game Swish and put Cuse/FSU second.

They're only little once. No do overs.

Not to mention, the only thing your 6 year old is going to understand is that his Dad is not there.

By all means, coach your son, be at his game. That's always more important. Just be sure that you keep reminding him that. You're missing the SU vs FSU game for him. He will appreciate it more when he is in years of therapy later. A little guilt goes a long way.

Would your 6 year old be missing his game to go to the FSU game or would it just be you? If it's just you, then no question you should stay and coach. If he'd end up going to the game with you, then ask him what he'd rather do. That way he's making the decision as to what is more meaningful to him, not you making up his mind for him.

Yeah, I think what got lost in the shuffle here is that yes, my kid, and my wife would be going to Doak with me. I would never leave my kid behind for something like this...

Does that change the scenario for anyone?

I'm actually leaning with the majority on this one anyway. I love coaching those games.

With that info...what's your kid want to do?

:) I need to ask.

Before our 1st practice, he did not have an opinion. After our 1st practice, he mentioned once that he wanted to play the 1st game.

Interesting sidenote, my neighbor, the diehard FSU season ticket holder was adamant that the Doak experience should come first.

My heart is with the board majority.

It does change things. Does little you want to stay home and play hoops or does he want to road trip to see the football game. give him the choice.

How do you know? You don't. No one does?
