My view is that Cooney is a shooter. That is his role. He shot the ball really poorly today. Therefore, he failed in his role terribly today. He did some other things well.

It happens. My concerns will be elevated if he shoots poorly against BC because as we saw last year, his shot is dependent on confidence and it would be shaken if he shoots poorly on Monday.

I don't know. If you're going by that definition, then hitting 47% for the first half of the season means he's basically done his job for the year. Are we going to start running into teams who don't bother guarding him? Not likely. Plus, I'd argue that this zone needs all 5 guys playing hard, so everybody has a key role in that way. So cooney was awful shooting the ball and if unc wasn't so hopeless vs the zone, then it could have really hurt us today. But I'm not sure there's much of an argument that he gets an for today's effort

His role is not limited to just shooting. Yes, he's our best shooter. But if that was truly his ONLY role on the court, do you honestly believe he'd be in the starting lineup? JB doesn't start him because shooting is all he brings to the table. He's a freaking basketball player. He plays at both ends of the floor. Shooting is ONE FACET of the game. He performed poorly in that facet today. He only turned the ball over once, created several turnovers, grabbed a couple rebounds, and was generally disruptive. He did not fail in his role, because, again, his role is to help the team win however possible.

Check me if I'm wrong, but we won. He hit a couple big shots. He came up with some big defensive plays. Did he not perform his role of helping the team win? Jesus.

His first shot was a great idea, but that second three he missed wide right (probably was fouled) was a poor choice and resulted in him getting sat down for most of the rest of the game.

No logic to the statement that Cooney as our #2 option is "shaky potatoes". SilentG has shown little to supplant Cooney, although he was better and more aggressive today. Still a little sloppy with the ball though.

I can't think of any off the top of my head especially while we are winning games which is strange. Scoop was pretty polarizing as a Junior as I recall.

It is rare when a poster bats 1.000 for the season, but you've managed to achieve it -- I don't think that you've been right about anything the entire season.

You do realize G would shoot less than 15% all season on Cooney's looks while Cooney would shoot 50% on G's looks right. Completely different shots and they are defended completely differently although I would like to see G pull the tiger a bit more on his WIDE OPEN THE DEFENSE LEFT HIM LOOKS FROM 3!

And every attempt is wide open standing there with time to line it up not running off screens catching and shooting ion the close out like Cooney's. I believe you missed the point of my post. They type of shots. I want MikeG shooting more of the shots he gets. If Cooney got those shots he's be lights out like he is warming up.

On the other end of the stick, how many lengthy negative posts did Southerland get? He was every bit as erratic as Cooney the last3-4 games but he was a board good guy who loved to pass gas and played defense as erratic as his shooting. Nowhere near the complete player TC is.
Go figure.

When Cooney costs us a game because of his shooting I'll let you guys know.
He plays great defense all game long and until we lose it doesn't matter.
Love to see his shot fall threw the hoop though.

I think part of the reason I love Cooney so much is because of the pure hate he received last season. I wasn't posting on here then, but friends, bar patrons, you name it just hated him. Glad I stuck by him and always knew that he would be fine. I'll continue to stand by him and I'm not the only one. Anybody who bashes him now I can say for sure really doesn't know basketball.

Has any player been held up to the standard TC is? Devendorf wasn't half the defensive player Cooney is and he had plenty of poor shooting games yet he was almost always given a pass for a poor on court performance. Cooney plays great D, he's generally very careful with the ball and makes good decisions. He's having a really solid season and will continue to do so regardless whether he has a poor shooting night.

...AND he's a sophomore who is getting his first career dose of extensive PT.

Funny you say that..I posted numerous times last year about how I felt Grant should play ahead of Southerland.
JS didn't have as many defenders though. Which is expected.
