Cooney

What shots has he been forcing? His midrange jumpers have been on point, contested or not, and his 3pt shooting has been great. The only shots he misses are contested layups.
He's good for a couple crazy shots per game. Short, medium, or long. Not a huge problem but it would be better if he passed some of those shots up.

idk if I agree with this. He's our best offensive weapon, next to Rak, and he makes crazy ones at a pretty good clip. I'm good with an NBA range 3-pointer or two or an off-balance jumper becuase he's shown that he can knock 'em down. Our offense doesn't exactly generate many high quality looks.

This was his best all around game. He was in complete control tonight and it showed. His handle was amazing, the split on the double team might have won the game for us. His D was outstanding and he hustled like he always does. As to his shot he is much more square than before and his rotation is back. Great game from him off the chart as he carried us.

Looks a lot better, just wish he wouldn't force shots so often.

I may be in the minority but I want him shooting even if he is forcing it up. We are already playing 4 on 5 on offense with Joesph being reluctant to score. Cooney running around waiting for the game to come to him isn't going to help. We need him to channel a bit of GMac and go get his even if means putting up some ill advised attempts.

Joseph had 7 assists today and 1 turnover...we were not playing 4 on 5. He is reluctant to shoot not by choice, but because this is the way his coach wants him to play. Who in their right mind passes up open shots unless they are instructed to not take them from a coach. He is asked to either get a lay up, possible foul line pull up, or distribute the ball.

I agree partially, but no way in he11 is JB ordering him to just not shoot. He has to start taking those wide open looks.

He has been pulled for taking them this season. JB also mentioned in a press conference that he shouldn't be taking them. That is why I guess I think they want him to focus on strengths.

He was in the doghouse for taking ill-advised shots. Again, I guarantee you he has not been told to not shoot at all.

Hmm. He shot 9-16 overall (over 56%), 7 for 11 from 3 (64%) and is shooting 39% from 3 for the season. He leads the team in steals and has the lowest number of turnovers for the season for the starters. I keep wondering how many girlfriends Trevor must have stolen for some people to search for things to rag/criticize him for. You are right he didn't shoot 100% and isn't perfect.

I don't think he been instructed not to shoot at all, because he has still shot the pull up mid range shot and attempted to drive occasionally. I just think he has been encouraged to think about not taking the 3. Maybe he just wants to focus on being selective and focus on setting up his teammates? It's just hard for me to wrap my brain around the idea that he wouldn't want to take a wide open 3 at times without some encouragement from the coaches to think twice about it. If I'm remembering the game it was brought up in the presser the threes he took were not forced shots but fairly open... I could be remembering wrong.

I actually think it is more basic even than those things. Ever since the Louisiana Tech game, he's handled the ball a lot more. Which has in turn helped him get more in the game flow, and created easier scoring opportunities for him.

And since that line in the sand game--he's transformed.
Note that, since the LaTech game, he's shooting 46.7% from three.

(How funny, that's the entire 9 game span I just factored and that's the game you mentioned as the start of his turnaround)

To me it's pretty simple...he's been taking to the hole more.

And making shots helps.

Agree that's a big factor. And it goes with what he said in a PS article a couple weeks ago: he's being more aggressive. That, and he's taking shots in better rhythm right now. Just looks so much more at ease, and smoother.

Rak was getting triple teamed and facing a lot of ball denial. I think they did a great job gameplanning for him.

Not really. Rak was getting fronted by the 7'-2" center with no backside help the entire game. They doubled down occasionally, but played him with one man most of the game. One of the few things they did do was the center did not hedge when Rak set ball screens, and this gave TC more space to come off ( great in game adjustment by JB).

They fronted Rak and collapsed on him when the entry pass was lobbed in. I don't think there were any less than 3 pairs of eyes on him at any given time.

From the 20 second mark in video, this is how they played Rak all night.

idk about that. On that play, we did a good job of spreading the court and keeping the help defense away, but I guess you and I just saw different things throughout the game. FSU didn't have a guy fronting Rak and a guy just waiting for him, I wouldn't expect any team to do that, but they did collapse hard when he caught the ball, from my perspective anyway.

I love Gerry McNamara, always have. I think sometimes people remember him differently than he was though. Extremely clutch, obviously. He only shot higher than 36% from 3 in one of his four seasons though. Rebound numbers are similar to Cooney, assists are significantly higher, for their career at this point, double. Steal numbers are comparable and Gerry had significantly more TO's. Up until this year though, Cooney had not received Gerry type minutes, this season their minutes are almost identical. Gerry was a better FT shooter and scored more throughout the duration of their careers.

Cooney at the very least is very comparable.

Very similar players, Gerry had a much cleaner stroke though.

The one in the first half from right near the foul line was a bit forced but it went through so I'll take that every day.

I love the play with Rak setting the screen for him early in the first half at the foul line extended. The big guarding Rak didn't jump out quickly enough and that gave TC all the room he needed to knock down an easy one. That's the one I thought gave him the rhythm he needed for the night. Love that play and can't remember seeing it used like that previously. Hope we see it a bunch again.

I agree 1000%. The biggest difference was/is mental. That's why Cooney was streaky. Gets in his head to much. Gerry was daggers from game one through the championship game (and beyond).

I agree about it being mental/confidence. Gerry knew he was good. Cooney seems to have more self doubt. Once he realizes how good he actually is I believe we will see more of last night and less of him running through screens all night and only taking 3 shots.

After last night's TC performance gave me the impression he has turned a corner somehow. It was different than the ND game last season. It will be very interesting going forward if TC has a game like Florida State every 3 or 4 games. If he can maintain this level of play going forward he may really be something special with the Orange. I remember there was a huge difference in play when Andy Rautins went from his Junior to Senior year. It will be really interesting to see what heights TC takes his career to at this point.
