Corey Cooper - WR

I may be wrong but i think a perfect SAT is 1600. So either SU only recruits rocket scientist's or your wrong about your SAT score

I think they recalibrated the scoring now for the "everyone gets a trophy" generation.

Yep, I about blew a gasket when my fifth grader proclaimed there's now a "Southern Ocean". W...T......!?!
Lol.. I figured it out via a trivia contest.. it was one of around 20 questions... struck me as a bizarre question, so I wiki'ed it and was shocked!

Not 100% sure, but when you don't qualify academically, it's not because your grades aren't up to par with those the school requires, but rather what the NCAA requires. Those #'s you rattled off are for the general student body, not athletes. Athletes are held to lower standards, so they only need to meet a minimum GPA and SAT/ACT that the NCAA puts forth, not the school. So the athletic admissions for Arkansas and Syracuse are the same for athletes.

From the NCAA Eligibility page on being eligible to enroll under a full scholarship:
  • Earn at least a 2.3 grade-point average in core courses.
  • Meet an increased sliding-scale standard (for example, an SAT score of 1,000 requires a 2.5 high school core course GPA)
  • Successfully complete 10 of the 16 total required core courses before the start of their senior year in high school. Seven of the 10 courses must be successfully completed in English, math and science.

Hey, I am the first to admit I have no idea how it really works out thereI'm pretty sure I am not alone, but I do beleive athletes have to make the same qualifications as all other students. And 1570 is just above average I believe in the new scoring system. It is the minimums in each catergory that make that tuffer.

He didn't get a high enough SAT score.
Good catch on that. I would be surprised if we signed anybody that didn't have the core requiremnets. Do you know if you can retake the SAT again? My son just finished his and he eneded up with a 1593, but would not make the grade in math for SU. I haven't gotten an answer yet back from the school, but pretty sure as long as you pay you can take it again.

He needed a 1000 and he scored in the 900's somewhere. He took it 3 times.

This was the last one before the school year

I am positive that athletes do not need to meet the same academic qualifications as other students, except for the Ivy League (And even Harvard changed around grades of some of their basketball players grades about a year ago). Generally, some better schools like Stanford and Northwestern like to take kids who won't fail out of school first semester by being overwhelmed in the classroom, but they don't have 85 rocket scientists running around with pads out there. An athlete does not have to have grades up to par with the rest of the school, guaranteed. If that was the case, you'd drastically diminish the player pool and I'd imagine most schools would have 30-40 kids on a team instead of 80-90

Is that just for critical reading and math, or writing also? I know when I applied for school they took all three but it was a known fact that writing tended to be overlooked and was simply used as a tiebreaker of sorts. But if he couldn't score a 1000 through the three then he really wasn't ready for college because that is really easy. A 1000 for just critical reading and math is harder but still very doable.

Nah, they added a writing section. When I was applying to schools most didn't look at it too much but it's becoming more important. Not sure how the extra section affects the NCAA clearinghouse.

Sounds like they went towards the AP exam model. Interesting.

Even though Cooper looked good to get some playing time this season, it should turn out to be an unexpected redshirt season for him, especially if he's in by January. Will also give Estime more of an opportunity at WR since he's almost certain to be on special teams this season anyway.

I think that will work out best. We are pretty good at the WR position this year. Estime will get playing IMO. I really think we are going to see some big plays from him on special teams this year, them we have Corey with Long next year, and maybe KJ to boot.

have you heard something we havent?

Unless you are an engineer orscientist ,most math is useless in every day life presuming you know your times table and basic arithmetic. I never required higher math in my career even once and I did more than OK.
