I meant to do this after the Princeton game but haven't had the time and was letting the final four loss finally fade away.

First of all let me state the obvious, huge win. Locks up a tourney berth barring a total collapse and allows wiggle room for SU to lose a Nova type game during the remaining schedule.

There were a lot more positives the negatives tonight but let me just run through the few issues that still need work.

1. Faceoffs - Not going to beat a dead horse here but we have to get more consistent here. Its been 5 years since Brennan and were still searching for an good faceoff guy, however Daddio seems to be comign into his own (more on him later). Going to be critical we develop Paduda or bring in another FOGO for next year. Also need to work with Conroy to adjust his technique, that on the ground start isnt going to work at the D1 level, he doesnt have the ability to win the draw to himself starting on the ground and good opposing FOGO's have ran rough shot over him.

2. Matt Pratt - Rough game for him tonight, was blown by repeatedly including what honestly should have been the tieing goal by English. Guy hustles hard but has to play better down the stretch, its one thing to get beat but its another for guys to simply just run past you especially that last sequence.

3. EMO- I have no problem with playing Powderly, Dejoe, and Walters on this unit, in fact I like it. Gives the opposing team a new look and us fresh legs. However, we need to run a few plays or have a better game plan then passing the ball around the outside for 25 of the 30 second man up and then having Dejoe or Walters launch from Club 44. Need get Schoonmaker or Cometti in on the EMO and look for Maltz more inside, this will help open up Dejoe/Walters for outside shots that arent as far out.

4. Dylan Donahue - I think he may have hit the freshmen wall a bit, doesn't seem as crisp or as active as he was earlier in the season. He was called for a ward and easily could have been called for two more including one late in the 4th that was pretty blatant. With Maltz being faceguarded we need the other 3 attack guys to provide points to take some pressure of the middies. That said I am very high on Dylan and I think he has a big future here.

Alright on to the positives:

Big shout out to Steve Ianzito, guy has been a rock this year on D. Steve came in with a lot of hype as a freshmen but never really lived up to it on the offensive side, however, in his senior year he has been the best short stick defender by far. He had another great game today and got a goal on a shot from distance. We really need him to continue to play at a high level as our other short stick D guys are either struggling right now or are very young and just getting there feet wet at the position.

Lamo again had a good game, there is no goalie controversy people, Lamo is your guy for the rest of the season. He has absolutely earned it.

Schoonmaker/Cometti - What can you say other then WOW. These two have taken there games to a next level especially Schoonie the last few games. His dodges to the goal have been unreal and dont even get me started on that off hand wrap around goal against Princeton, sick. I hope people dont forget about Cometti either he was carrying a large part of the offensive load early and has been steady all season. If these two keep playing like this, Syracuse is going to be real tough to beat.

Thought Billy Ward really busted his @ss out there tonight, it was clear he was overmatched from a physical standpoint by the Cornell defenders due to his size but he kept plugging away all game and that last goal was needless to say huge. We really need to get a point or two from him and Rice every game to take the pressure off of the middies and Maltz.

JoJo has been good all year, playing within himself and most of the time understanding he needs to be a feeder and not Mike Powell. He hasnt scored a ton the last few weeks but all of his goals have been timely and exceptionally big including the last two games.

Moving forward this win pretty much locks up a tourney berth, but Syracuse still has work to do regarding the Be tourney. Nova is actually in the drivers seat right now for the 1 seed as they are 3-0 but have yet to play ND or St. Johns and have a losing record overall. A win against Rutgers on Saturday should be a lock so that leaves Gtown and ND. SU simply needs to win one of those two to lock in a BE tourney bearth. Right now Providence and Rutgers are near locks to miss the tourney, that leaves one additional team who will be left out as the BE only takes 4 of the 7 teams to the tournament. Pretty wide open right now on who could miss, there are scenarios where ND and even SU could be left out of the BE tourney but granted an NCAA at large berth, crazy. Looking forward to pounding RU saturday and hope to make the game!

That blatent push on Maresco with around 40 sec left not called gave English the final shot (horrible non Call). The intangibles of this team is (Guts & Heart) their ability to overcome adversity the last 2 weeks against storied opponents, 2 4th Quarter comebacks. These:) Kids have the stones to win it all.

Nice recap; the only things I'd add to your Cornell thoughts are:

2.) Pratt had a tough night but was left on an island due to Cornell's strategy and a few bad slides (or no slides). The Big Red was slick in attacking Megill's alley while Pannell was either at X or on the wing. They wanted to force Megill to slide and leave Pannell or they figured the slide would have to come across the crease (i.e. too late from a different position). They were right more than once. That's a great offensive strategy made easy to execute when you've got an attackman of Pannell's ability.

I couldn't understand why Matt Harris was playing 25 yards away from the goal on Cornell's last drive to tie. He or Hamlin should've decided (or been told in the final TO) who had slide responsibility and to stay home because there was no way Megill was coming off Pannell. Pratt had the unfortunate designation of being the weakest link on the field (as Ianzito was a beast) so it was inevitable that they'd pick him to attack.

3.) I'm not a fan of having an EMO unit full of offensive specialists (and half-filled with guys who would otherwise watch from the sidelines but for man up opportunities) - especially freshmen and sophomores. I think the last EMO had DeJoe and Walters up top together and w/ 35 seconds left in the EMO DeJoe takes a horrible shot for an easy save/turnover. To make matters worse, he was forced to play D as Cornell realized they had a mismatch. I can't remember if Cornell capitalized.

I like Walters on one wing or up top. He's proven himself from last year. DeJoe needs more seasoning and I think it's difficult to get that from only playing EMO.

A few final random thoughts...

Jenkins - the kid has tons of heart and is quick but is physically outmatched. I understand the need to give Pratt or Ianzito a breather during games but how bout we try someone else.

Lecky - I don't care if the other team knows you're all left; play to your strength. Gotta use your athleticism to set up your dominant hand. Please don't take another right-handed shot - it's not keeping the D honest.

Schoonmaker - I was so wrong about this kid. Thought he had a poor lax IQ because he's from Oregon. Man has he blossomed. Great to have another thoroughbred in the stable!

Good points, you are right about Harris, he seemed late to slide a few times last night, he has to know time and score there and slide quicker. Would have been a disaster for SU to allow that easy goal late like that, thank god for the cross bar. Pratt was also on an island a lot and I see your point, but he cant simply let guys blow by him like that, its OK to give up goals it happens but that last blow bye was pretty ugly.

EMO definitely has issues and has been a sore spot for about 3-4 years to, which is odd because it used to be a lock when SU was on the EMO back in the day. I think at this point we probably should sit Powderly and get Schoonie or Cometti on the man up. That would give us JoJo, Maltz, Cometti/Schoonmaker, Rice/Ward, along with Dejoe and Walters. Thats a nice combo of dodgers, inside guys and long distance gunners. I cant remember which one but either Dejoe or Walters got some run with the second middie line last night which was great to see. I think there better options then Lecky and Barber at this point.

Regarding your thoughts on Lecky I think its probably time to see what he can do as a short stick D middie, he simply doesnt have the shot accuracy to be a strong O Mid and his playing time has been steadily decreasing. Once all the new recruits get here next year its going to be hard to find him playing time if he doesn't move and we need a few short stick D guys.

I agree with this completely. Kid is lightening fast and can certainly take it straight down the field on a turnover. I truly believe that needs to be his position moving forward, especially after Ianzito and Fazio graduate...

the skooner. i watch this big lanky kid and i see his size and think to myself...oh boy wrong sport.
yet he continues to prove me wrong. been a nice suprise. big time game last night. LET ER RIP!

I cringe whenever the Leckster winds up. I don't think his shots even made I to the goal last night. Ended up pegging a few guys.

Looking ahead Syracuse always seems to struggle with the "short turnaround games". I'm thinking either Rutgers (classic trap game) or Georgetown on Saturday the 20th (we play Hobart in the middle of the week before G'town) could be similar to the Villanova game. Hopefully we can find a way to win those games.

A couple quick things.

Rutgers for the first half of the year was probably one of the worst teams in Div 1, they couldnt beat anyone but the absolute dregs and was absolutely destroyed by St. Johns. That being said they have played better the last few weeks and really should have beat Notre Dame at home a couple games ago. They have a great FOGO guy who dominated Croonquist at Nova. Daddio is going to have to be on his game because this is not a good matchup for Conroy. This could be a closer then expected game but Rutgers just lost there starting goalie for the year and are playing a true Freshmen. Dont be surprised to see Megill or Paduda take some draws tomorrow. Personally I hope we just roll with Daddio, hes our best guy by far and has made good adjustments. I like Conroys hustle but we have to get him out of that on the ground stance its not viable against decent or better face off guys.

Hobart is a good young team on offense but there D cant stop anybody and they havent beaten SU in years, I dont see that being a loss unless we really struggle on O.

Gtown is an interesting game, they have some bad losses but also some decent wins. That being said there a very thin team with little depth and there D is not exactly a strength. As crazy as it sounds tomorrow might be the toughest game of the 3. Though I would give the edge to Georgetown personally.

If RU's F/O guy is better than Croonquist, then this game will likely be uncomfortably close. Maybe too close...

While that maybe true, RU will have to actually score when they have the ball. Best best is for Daddio to try and muck up the faceoffs so the wings get involved and you have scrambles where it becomes a 50/50 ball. Look at the Nova game for example, SU went 2 of freeking 24 and still should have won that game if Maltz didnt get denied on a doorstep goal and trust me Nova is a much better team then RU.

I'd be worried about Hobart if it was a road game.

We should muck up just about every face off. Gives us a better chance.
