General Thoughts on Maryland

When is the last time we have a #1 vs.# 2 MD vs. Cuse game? Late 90s when they were both in the Final Four every single year?

Several of the Maryland fanlax dweebs seem pretty obsessed with this place. Newsflash this is a Cuse message board.

There are a few over the top but most are fairly reasonable. I have had some good discussions with a # of them in the past. A lot of the people trolling over there aren't' fans of either team they just want to stir S up.

It's just annoying. All this "pick your poison" talk about covering Maryland's offense but nothing about having to pick your poison when covering Cuse players as if Cuse is some 3rd tier backwater without a plethora of talent on offense.

Our guys are going to have to perform against Maryland.

No kidding, but Cuse is a talented team with a stable of offensive horses. Maryland will have to pick their poison on defensive matchups.

They have a lot of weapons, but in general I think the jury is still slightly out on just how effective Johnson and Lyons will be against top comp. Last year they were the go to guys in Yale's offense and finished the year with points in the 40s, not great shooting percentages, and poor assist to TO ratios. They didn't exactly go off no matter who was guarding them, and a game against a 3 win Loyola team from last season does not necessarily tell you much. The other factor though is that they are another year removed from season ending injuries in 2024 and put up big numbers on the same line as Brandau pre-injuries.

I am more worried about their depth at middie behind those guys. Elijah Stobaugh looks really good and could have a big day if he gets a short stick. There will be a couple guys who we would ideally have in long pole matchups if not for the Yale additions. Short sticks will be tested in a major way.

Again, I am not saying anything about them. I'm talking about this Cuse team having weapons.

Points in the 40s isn't a bad thing, when a team plays only 13 games like Yale did.
Syracuse played 19 games last year. Leo Johnson had 46 points in 13 games so:
46/13 * 19 = 67 points.
Leo Johnson's shooting pct was .289 last year, not to different from Spallina's .292. Lyons was at .313.

so i’m going to april 11th game vs uva n couldn’t find any tickets in preferred section unless was on uva section n def not doing that. So just got general admission. Can’t wait

Can I buy tickets at the box office right before the game? And it's general admission so sit anywhere right? Are concessions open?

You can tell I've never been to a lax game.

Yes, most of the dome is general admission, there is a small patch that is actual assigned ticket seating. Yes concessions are open but not to the extent of fball or bball obviously.

It can be annoying but the Maryland defense has done a decent job containing the SU offense that has put up 14-15 goals a game the past couple years. Not really a surprise that the main talk would be how does the SU defense contain the Maryland offense.

Hopefully there isn't as many self inflicted mistakes this year and the offense can find some rhythm so the narrative ends up flipping.

In every game from 2024 on we have had our opportunities. That is even true of the final four game, but especially true for the regular season games in 24 and 25. We had a lot off open looks at cage that were as good as any you could ask for in those games that either got swallowed up by McNaney or we missed the shot. Thomson infamously went 0-8 shooting in 2024 with at least half of those being wide open looks. Devastating in a 1 goal game. They were not as open for English in 2025, but it was a similar story in that game with him going 0-8, along with other guys not capitalizing on open looks.

Yes they have an excellent disciplined defense, but we have also got in our own way as well. It is not just MD containing us and not even giving us chances, despite what their more arrogant fans would say. They acted like they dominated on that end after the 2024 game despite it being unbelievably close. Even before the Leo crease call we had 2 good looks in OT. We have had our chances and just have not made the most of them.

Dont buy tickets day of the game. The tickets the day before last game were $21. Day of Game they were $29...

I am curious about the defensive matchups for SU tomorrow. I don't know enough about the UMD defense to really comment on who they will match up with. For SU, they have some choices to make.

I assume Riley will be on Leo Johnson. I don't know how much of a difference it will make, but I am not sure how many times Figuerias has had to guard a lefty (to my mind, most quarterbacks are righties). How much of a difference that makes, I am not sure.

Things get interesting when comes to where to put Dwan. Most will probably say to put him on Eric Spanos, who is a big dude at 6'5 220. Dwan loses an inch but has 10 more pounds on Spanos. But that would leave Jordan Beck, standing at 6'4 241 on the fleet of foot, Brendan Erksa. Not sure that's a matchup you want in the open field.

My suggestion would be to put Dwan on Erksa and Beck on Spanos. It's a risk given that Beck hasn't seen a ton of real game action (not counting the man down duties over the years), and hasn't been tested much by opposing defenses. But size wise and skill wise this seems like the most even matchup. Dwan has some foot speed that could help him keep up with Erksa. Or you move Figuerias to Erksa (who he guarded last year). Either way, I don't think Beck should guard Erksa or Johnson, and I don't think it's realistic to bring in a different defender when Beck has started the first two games of the year.

Spanos was the leading scorer against SU last year, with nine points in two games. So it's risky to bump Dwan off him, but maybe a different matchup will result in a different outcome. Curious what others think.
