Cornell Postgame Thoughts

justin taylor:

0 points vs tennessee...in 28 minutes!

0 points vs Gonazaga in 26 minutes!

3 points vs UVA in 28 minutes!

like, literally, you cannot make this up!

if Benny did the same ...everyone would call for his benching...oh wait...

I dont have an agenda here...im going off of facts!

is he slightly improving? seems so...

is he anywhere close to good enough yet? nope.

and yeah the pg needs to get him involved...but this about more than just that...he literally cant get a shot off vs those types of teams...and it is a HUGE PROBLEM for a starting forward

especially if you also wanna play guys like mcleod and brown...who offer nothing with the ball as well (not mention non shooters like copeland and starling)

puts the guards in a tough spot. makes it VERY easy to play against.

which is why you are seeing those 3 blowouts that we saw.

at this point, hes a good bench option, imo...for next season, unless he figures it out vs ACC this year, which is possible.

he needs to shoot and he neds to score,...vs every opponent...thats his role.
LOL - let’s put the team’s leading rebounder on the bench. :)

What do you mean you don’t like Judah’s stroke? You have no idea! Lots of guys in the NBA have somewhat unusual strikes. Everybody doesn’t shoot like Steph. The key is to be consistent with what you do and get good rotation. Judah has improved a lot, and his stroke was butter last night. Some people are never satisfied. And he’ll be a 2st rounder regardless. Nobody cares what you think, especially Judah.
Okay. Literally said he is a stud and best guard cuse had in the last decade. If he can some how be a 2st rounder, that would be historic!

yeah he does offer something. im not trying to bag on JT, really.

I am shocked by how ineffective he has been on offense though. against good teams. cheering for how he did vs cornell is fine and all but lets not lose sight of the big picture here: be actually a good tourney level team again.

lets be honest - how many really care about the colgates and cornells? is that how far we have fallen that that is the new measurement?

we care about the dukes and uva's.

against those teams JT doesnt have the athleticism to be effective offensively, from what we have seen thus far in his career. benny does.

yeah perhaps JT is a better rebounder and defender...perhaps. (benny did have 4 boards in 14 mins in a recent game fyi)

If I wanna play with a Duke or Gonzaga, I choose benny though. simply because he gives a chance to win.

Im not even necessarily saying Start benny...im just saying...going into the season everyone had benny as a starter for this exact reason: the team needs his athleticism and size at the PF spot. ...if they wanna beat p5 level teams...

benny might not deserve to start, but JT hasnt shown he can handle the tier 1 squads. lets just acknowledge the facts, please.
JT should be the starting 2. He is undersized vs pf's on ranked teams. He is vastly improving but is in an impossible position .

JJ made some plays late, he deserves credit for that. Two buckets late (a driving layup and a huge foul-line jumper), and he battled for a couple of important rebounds late, as well.
how was JJ last year at ND, I seem to remember he was “ok”, not great. Lots of exprcrations here, maybe pressure gets to him a bit. I suspect he’ll develop more as they go. I think the similarity of his game to Judah may cause an issue also, decreases his chances for driving the ball? He seems more under control than Judah, but I wouldn’t expect him to take any points away from him. He has to find his niche I think.
I’m concerned about Benny and I agree with whoever said they didn’t notice he wasn’t there.

Bold statement, Westry has proven zero at this level and hasn’t played regularly in almost two years.

I swear this fan base thinks every player is the next “insert player who’s actually good and has done something” with zero logic behind it.

Can the dude play one game first?
LOL BUT IM EXCITED. Watch the tape though you'll see what I am seeing.

I just think it’s unfair to have the expectation to have him come in like gangbusters and save the team after he hasn’t played in SOOOO long. He can have all of the same skill but having skill and not be in game shape/cardio. Less than a month ago people were making excuses for Benny not being in game shape for missing an exhibition and regular season game, Westry is almost two years from playing regularly.

If he can come in, be a plus defender and a steady ball handler for 15 minutes at the guard spot that would be a huge help. Watching JJ run the point in a tight game while Judah sat with 4 fouls was the most frustrating 20 minutes of my week.

I'd like to see a new stat. even if is geeky. For each 3pt attempt: ✓=made, r=hit the rim, x=missed the rim. The reasoning is that Cuffe and JJ are no where close to 3pt capability. Their shots are wild. What about Chance? Did his misses show promise?

If we tracked that though Bell might be the worse.. While he has made the most he has had a ton of wild air ball misses too.

What I dont get is how many times we miss the rim by a ft left or right? How does a Div 1 guy do that on shots where he is balanced?

what is lazy?

what is his main strengthe then?

there;s a double standard between justin and benny imo

i think benny gives the team a better chance to beat actual good teams...bc he can play vs them athletically whereas justin cannot match up vs p5 forwards.
Justin gives effort all the time. Benny never does. Benny should stay seated.

well

theres already several other players that offer rebounding and no scoring on the team...how many of those players can a winning team carry?????????

maybe the issue is how the team involves JT

he cant get his own points but can if the team helps him

need to design and run specific plays for him

get him out of his shell

because 0, 0, 3, vs the quad 1's...is going to mean more blowout losses ...if hes gonna be playing 30m/gm

mcleod, brown, cope aint scoring either

regardless of wherever you stand on JT vs Benny

whomever is out there needs to be more involved in the offense...and be a threat.

JT is a threat and they guard him like a threat even when he's missing shots.. The stay attached to him all over the court.. Not in his hip but so they can close out and run him off the arc

i mean needs to actually put numbers on the boad not be a decoy

The problem is not JT's skill set. The problem is that he is playing out of position. We need Benny. No need for JJ on the court with Judah. Benny could solve a lot of problems as would a healthy Hima.

Hima, even healthy, would solve exactly zero problems. Only thing he can do is block shots. Naheem does that, and probably better.

Just stop with the Hima thing. He’s not an ACC level player.

I like Cuffe on D but on the other end he has done nothing. I don't remember him doing anything but taking and missing threes.
Ya, I was really high on his D last night, but his offense analytics for the season are hideous.

I think he's the best on-ball defender on the team but yeah, his offense - yikes.

Please go back and read Cheri's remarks about Justin. It's called doing everything you can to help the team. Scoring is only one way. SMH

Look, JJ is going to be just fine. They need his athleticism and energy. Wait til they get in conference play. He’ll be better.

Perhaps Hima has not improved but perhaps he has. What we have at center is not working against the teams that can punch our dance ticket.

Hima is healthy, he’s just not good. This is like begging for Chinoso to get PT years back.

At this point why not give Cuffe some of the minutes, better defense and can’t shoot any worse. Rather see Judah with the ball making decisions anyway. There’s plenty of minutes to go around.
