on the recruiting front, the more NYC/ LI kids we have here the easier it will be to recruit more. They seem to be a tight bunch

I think it is and I think it would be further validated if EO comes in. Third time is the charm, right?

I was very impressed with the young man. He fits Marrone's profile. How many times did he say "hard working?" Gus is very articulate and it's very obvious that his family is very proud of him. This is a huge moment for that family. It was great to see.

I think so.

It seems that we are getting NYC's best players and that our succes is having a multiplier effect.

Marrone has done a really nice job cultivating NYC players and it seems to me that we are building a pipeline. These things have a tendency to snowball, so I like the direction we are headed.

However, in order to really bring it to the next level, we need to start getting the #1 players in the State. That has eluded Marrone & Co. up to this point. We have been getting 2 or 3 of the top 10 in NY State the last couple of years but we haven't found a way to get the #1 guy. Maybe this year it changes with Ebo.

On another note, Marrone MUST start building similar pipelines in WNY. There is no reason we shouldn't be the go-to school for those in the Buffalo, and especially, Rochester areas. For the record, I think he knows this and I foresee that being a bigger priority over the next couple of years.

This was definitely in the binder. It may have been on the front page at the top. Still has a ways to go for sure, but the results are beginning to speak for themselves.

Again, I think people thinking that we are consistently going to take on Florida, Notre Dame, PSU for recruits may be setting themselves up for a let down. Sure we wll win a few battles, but the big boys are tough to beat on a consistent basis. I agree with PHAT, we have gotten a lot of NYC's best players, sure we whiffed on Ishaq but oh well. If we can beat out BC, UVA, Maryland, etc for NYC kids and land the occasional 4-5 star kid, every couple of years from NYC, we will be just fine.

My point was, get the numbers working and the kids will recruit the kids, 10-12 NYC kids is great when another kid from the City comes up for a visit. hell are facilities will soon be adequate, ( practice facility, dome locker rooms) but when the kids come up here and hang out with kids that are a lot like them, it sells, no ifs, ands or buts about it. Kids recruit kids as well, especially today.

Sure, I have piled on Marrone at times, but he is truly taking a ground up approach, total rebuild and a lot of the kids he has recruited will need a couple of years for sure but what we are starting to see is the skill guys finally being upgraded

Good post.

I'll add one thing about Marrone's "plan" with the NYC kids--given the level of football in NYS in general and NYC in particular, it generally takes these kids 2-3 years to get up to speed. When we had such a depleted roster, some of these players we were bringing in were forced onto the field too early to round out the depth chart, but we're starting to get to the point where the majority of incoming recruits can get redshirted and acclimate.

I think we're really going to see the "plan" pay dividends moving forward for that reason.

Back to our regularly scheduled topic:

I, also, think Marrone's plan is starting to take hold. Gotta start in our own backyard first, before moving to other people's yards. Get NYC/NYS locked up as SU being the first choice for most of the NY kids. Once we are there, start going regional, NE, Eastern Seaboard, etc. Finally start going national. Not saying this for every recruit and that we should stick to all those areas, but basically in general this should and appears to be the plan.

LOL, just added almost the same thing to my post that you responded to. I think what frustrates people with Marrone is there is nothing fancy about the process nor his recruiting style, it will work with some kids, not with a lot but what he is doing is creating a sense of pride within this program and even moreso with the NYC kids, there is a lot of them buying in as well. Nice to see but people who think Marrone lacks personality, etc ahve never met him.

If we use TOS as a basis of information to go off of, top 10 NY players only, the results have increased annually since Marrone's first class. Note this is with Broyld's enrollment coming a year later than originally anticipated. I personally don't put a ton of stock into the recruiting sites but enjoy looking for entertainment. That being said, using TOS, the results are tangible.

In conclusion, just based off of size and athleticism alone, I believe recruiting has progressed and that Marrone's plan is on track.

Finally, welcome aboard Gus!!!

yeah, I think the parallel worth drawing here was that whether you like Schiano or hate him and whether RU was much further in the tank than the cuse was when DM took over, it took him a long time to get the "best" player in NJ (13 years or however long it was until last year). I'm not trying to get into an RU comp, but simply saying Schiano could certainly sell/recruit and getting THE best players vs. THE best programs is still a major uphill battle.

I'd also argue that I'm not sure it's really that important. Stars are great and having 5 star kids is terrific. I'm not going to turn them down. But this program will be built on (largely) three-star kids and that's where we need to do our damage -- evaluating well and developing exceptionally well.

I think the last three years SU has taken 2 or 3 of the top 5 in NYC and NYS each year. That's solid work. And there is nothing new about elite programs coming in an cherry picking the national recruits in this state. It has always been that way.

Marrone needs to attack New Jersey recruits with equal fervor...

We can't let those fertile recruiting grounds go by the wayside.

I can't believe you used New Jersey and fertile in the same post?!?!

Comes down to winning on the field. If he doesn't win he won't be around to see any plan come to fruition. And winning games will snowball the process as well of landing better and more top players from ny state.

I think so. I think we've seen a small step up every year in recruiting, and it seems like this year will be the best one under Marrone. Here's hoping Marrone is proving right, those of us that have been preaching patience.

Wins and losses are not the only criteria.

Wins are a lagging indicator.

Example 0-4 start season before an 11-0-1 year.

Chasing results means chasing your tail.

The quality recruiting this offseason is a big reason for optimism. That's a train that needs to just keep on rolling.

The jury's still out on the plan with the offense though. At some point the offense needs to be a weapon, not just something that we hope does enough to get by. Whether that happens because their system catches on or the talent improves or a little of column a and a little of column b, we need some fireworks on the scoreboard.

In this day of age few coaches get extended stays at programs while losing and losing selling hope of the next recruiting class.

Wins may be a lagging indicator but it's the only indicator fans care about. And fans=money into the program. Wins is the only criteria that matters.

The casual fans left years ago, Marrone's job is not even close to being in jeopardy for at least 2 more seasons. The deck is stacked this year, going to be tough year and a bowl game would be a solid year for sure. I just don't see his job being on the line at minimun of 2 years and I think that is pushing it. I believe it has alwyas been a 5 year plan and he will be given that a minimum. The University at least the people that matter really like Marrone, all that matters when your fan base left the building 8-9 years ago. winning brings them back but a coaching carousel isn't the answer, unless you are going to pay big bucks and have the resources. People need to get out more, Syracuse job is closer to Duke at this point than it is say UNC or Maryland, it a simple matter of finance and resources. In addition coaches don't care about 15 years ago, they may say they do but they don't. Coaches now know how difficult it is to win at Syracuse. People will throw their arms up about Maryland, I am not saying they have had a ton of success, look at last year but they certainly have more resources to try and win that SU. Coaches are't going o take jobs where the deck is stacked. Skip Holtz wasn't dumb, thank god

I'm starting to feel like this is a snowball that could catch fire.
Dammit you stole the response I just getting ready to post, SUinNYC! But good one :)
