Could it be that Marrone's plan is coming to fruition

In this day of age few coaches get extended stays at programs while losing and losing selling hope of the next recruiting class.

Wins may be a lagging indicator but it's the only indicator fans care about. And fans=money into the program. Wins is the only criteria that matters.

The deck is stacked this year, going to be tough year

The schedule this year is easier than most any we'll see starting next year.

Exactly! The people are already starting with the "excuses" in early July!

Enough with the excuses. Win games! The bar is set pretty damn low. Win 6 and get to a low-level bowl.

And schedules look a lot easier when your team is actually good.

Hell, in the thread about the '96 Minny game people are arguing how we should have beaten a 9 win ECU team because we were at home, and they're totally right. For the past 10 years our schedules have looked daunting, because we've sucked.

SOS has nothing to do with how good or bad a team is.

But it sure as hell gives you a good clue.

I should have said that differently in my reply. Whether a team is good or bad, it has no effect on SOS.

From a conference standpoint hell yes, from an OOC standpoint NO way. I dont think people realize that NW is no pushover and Missou on the road late in November isnt Colgate in late September.

There will be more conference games now and fewer OOC. Plus OOC will have big games in NJ. Also, in conference with the VT's, Miami's, FSU's, Clemson's and UNC's is much more than the BE will offer.

Wins and losses are not the only criteria.

...

Chasing results means chasing your tail.

I agree on the first part, but I'm fairly certain the defenders of Marrone's offensive system to this point -- of which I believe you are one -- have been telling us that we are playing it close to the vest to win games. Isn't that chasing results? Not sure I get the difference. Plus, I'd argue every single CFB coach in the country is chasing results. Sure they're trying to build a program but they aren't taking for granted any win they can get.

As for the first part, I agree that wins and losses are only part of the equation. I also believe Marrone doesn't feel legit warmth in his seat (that was fun to type) until at least after this season. I also think the recruiting is a great sign. But those other parts of the equation still aren't adding up to a ton yet. If this offense struggles mightily again this year, I'd think there would be some pretty significant pressure to shake up the offensive staff, no?

I'm starting to feel like this is a snowball that could catch fire.

That my friend is a perfect line for a team from Syracuse. Well done.

Marrone is a farmer and he's been cultivating his recruiting areas since day one, some have just blossomed earlier then others. I just want to add that no school gets all their top players to stay in state, none. Well...maybe Nebraska.

when playing 12 games, there is very little distinction b/w OOC and conference. The SOS is the SOS. Most teams in the SEC have a harder schedule than us, but look at who they play OOC.

Our OOC schedule is ridiculous, and I think everyone here thinks that.

But we play in the Big East this year.

The quality recruiting this offseason is a big reason for optimism. That's a train that needs to just keep on rolling.

The jury's still out on the plan with the offense though. At some point the offense needs to be a weapon, not just something that we hope does enough to get by. Whether that happens because their system catches on or the talent improves or a little of column a and a little of column b, we need some fireworks on the scoreboard.
as soon as we have a quarterback who can do more than just get by, the offense will do more.

That may be true, but even if Nassib really is as limited as you believe the coaching staff still makes some decisions that have nothing to do with Nassib that I think do not always put the offense in position to move the ball and score points.

I'm willing to put money on Ryan having an outstanding year, but it also depends upon the WR's.

Of course. But my comment wasn't about some numerical calculation of SOS, it was about our perception of the schedule as fans. Our schedules look hard because we don't feel like we can beat many of the teams on it. Back during our heyday schedules seemed less daunting because we were good, and we felt like we could beat the NC States, ECUs, Pitts, West Virginias, etc. I mean if we were trotting out the '98 Orange this season would we be so a-scared of this schedule?
