Coverage Was Disappointing ?

Not ideal. A couple things:

“Coverage” = Media (Not fans). I think it’s unfair to say he’s unhappy with the fans, by this statement. Not a great look, however given the time and place. Does come off as a bit tone deaf.

I have more of an issue with refusing to answer the absolute softball question “what do you say to the fan base”.

I mean holy cow, this is an open mic to get your message across!! It’s basic PR.

“The fans are disappointed, the staff is disappointed, the school is dissatisfied and I’m disappointed. We’re going to get it right. We have a solid class coming in. We”re going to pound the portal for veteran players We’re going to have a familiar face around the program that can help raise our profile and help in NIL. There’s a lot to be optimistic about, but it starts with me. I take responsibility for our record, and I take responsibility for getting it right”.

He needs to get some basic media training. He basically answered all the tough questions and passed on the one question where he could say what he wanted.
Him having nothing to say to the fan base shows he didn't have anything nice to say

Just say, we have a terrific recruiting class coming in, we are going to be aggressive in the transfer portal and we look forward to building this program back to where it belongs.

How hard would that have been?

And complaining about the local media? Are you serious?

He was treated with kids gloves almost all season. This is infuriating.

Who is this inspiring to donate the NIL funds they need?! No one.
Bingo. If he can’t nail that softball how does he talk to donors? Just awful.

Yup. It’s really bad.

Yup. It’s really bad.

On the one hand, I feel really bad for Red. He's a program legend as a player, and has given a lot back to the program as an assistant coach. It also isn't his fault that JB comported himself poorly at the end forcing the powers that be to force him to step down, with poorly construed circumstances favoring an internal hire afterwards that elevated him to the top of the list.

On the other hand, I don't. He was clearly unqualified to be handed the reins, and struggles with all of the aspects of leading a program that should be basic table stakes. This is a performance driven profession -- and I struggle to see any evidence that he can handle any aspect of this job, beyond organizing practices.

Boeheim was a coach for 47 years. He had to have "that" press conference 45 times.

I'm sure he got better with practice.

It's like being the losing coach in the Super Bowl, and someone who lost a coin flip shoves a mic in your face 20 minutes after the game.

I'd be telling people where they can shove their mic.

That's why I'm not a coach.

YUP.

And if he thinks the local media was harsh, maybe it's a good thing he doesn't look like the guy to return the program to national relevance.

Coach K and old school coaches getting time is just as bad of an example as Kenny Payne. It isn't the same environment anymore. There is too much money involved now and too many massive donors the days of coaches staying 4/5 years and building programs at the P4 level without success and "learning" on the job are over. They will be fired, especially at a top-level job that boosters are paying millions of dollars for, which they will not be paying that for a losing team's changes will start happening faster and faster.

For example, Utah just fired their coach who had a record similar to Red 65-62 (.512 winning %) because he didn't make the tournament. That is the standard now. Coaches at school who want winning basketball programs will not allow coaches to "learn" on the job like they did 50 years ago. It is a different day and an age.

If you get a P4 job, you better be ready to win in the first 2/3 years. Have a plan for the portal. Plan to build a roster. Plan to install a culture. Plan to install a system of basketball on both ends of the court. Plan to win over boosters. Plan to win over the community.
To be fair, I explicitly said comparing to K (or Kenny Payne on the other side) are both bad examples.

Adapting quickly to react with the best response to whatever is thrown at you-
Good coaches do that in games, AND in answering Q's like that.
FAIL X2.

All...he went our coverage on DEFENSE was bad all year

Gonna be honest here. Babers got fired and rightfully so but Babers seemed like a great guy and was very likable as a person.

Red might be a great guy but he is far from likable if I’m being honest. This team was a tough watch and Autry is a tough watch/listen on top of that. He’s not easy to root for

For Autry to go up there and carry himself like that, on the verge of tears are you kidding me? Could you ever see JB crying or on the verge of tears in a press conference after a loss??? Think about that. Adrian is in over his head as. Power 4 D1 head coach. SMU shut down Lampkin and Red had no plan in place to address that. We over-pass on offense, opting for acrobatic, high difficulty two's when we need threes. It's mind blowing

He's not cut out for this and for him to refuse to answer that last question and not send a message to the fan base to try and reassure us that everything is under control and they have a plan is pathetic and speaks volumes. He's a guard position coach not a D1 head coach. There is another year of this on the horizon and it sucks knowing this. Wildhack needs to go.
I think JB was close to crying when he threw the chair leaving the Big East Championship press conference when Paparo rescinded the technical on Michael Graham after he took a swing at the Hawk.

Red knew this presser was going to happen like a month into the season. This was a bad team and he knew how this would end, without a tourney bid. He needed to be prepared regardless of the timing

So not only does he need on-the-job coaching training and training on how to utilize the transfer portal, but he also needs media training too?

Is he the only high Division I coach who struggles in every single one of these areas, and should literally get a failing grade in all three?

The end can't come soon enough.

I don't know Red other than what I've seen on the computer or television. I've always thought he has come across as a quality guy. It must be awful to have to trudge out and discuss again why your team can't get it done. It would be great to see if a really good quality point guard could make Red look like a much better coach. Some statement of hope would have been appropriate.

Sometimes great coaches are bad speakers, and great speakers are bad coaches.

Babers talked a great game. Couldn't coach one.

Maybe we'll have Kline address the media after every game next season?

The Nye Automotive Press Secretary.

How about being a bad coach and a bad speaker? The ole double negative.
