Coyle addresses the coaching situation

Not really sure how much more competitive he can be with the ticket pricing as we are already pretty damn cheap compared to other P5 programs. With that being said, he needs to figure out the neverending attendance problem. It is beyond embarrassing when they play that jacked up intro video at the football games in front of a 2/3 empty stadium. Obviously winning will help, but there is a still a fundamental disconnect between CNY and SU Football that needs to be repaired.
even a bar with $1 beers and $2 well drinks needs to advertise and cant rely on word of mouth to get people in the door, even if everyone has a blast everytime they go.

you got to get them there, let them see for themselves...hell make it about the game and not about Syracuse if you have too. i cant tell you how many minor league baseball games i went to, many of them didnt even involve a Yankee team, but i went because it was fun...everytime.

and i personally think cnyers are smart enough to overcome jake/buzz's words, but if you and others dont, well...i cant help anymore.

It's both. Fans need to feel important. Like their contribution matters... So to that end - w's and some genuine outreach/bridge building.

Not to mention competence. Hard to be a fan when you have to tell people about the 44 fallout or spelling issues.
horse and rabbit stew. people don't go to the games because the games are torture to sit through. try talking people into going to a game who don't know who shaw or crouthamel are

the home record has been enough, jake or buzz or whoever's words don't matter

9-20 against former BCS or current P5 teams at home since 2009.

the diehards who travel to games might forget just how bad it is at home

Last year really skewed that number.

From 2009 to 2013 they were 9 and 14. That's not great, but for a rebuilding program not awful either.

That record is with a program that went 2 -17 from 2005 to 2008.

Agreed, especially given how hotly debated those topics have been around here.

My opinion is that he struck all the right chords. I actually supported Gross moving games to NY/NJ and his NYC marketing campaign as well as the "NY's College Team" branding. It all made sense when we were in a severely weakened Big East Football Conference and were trying to ensure (a) that we had enough revenue and exposure to compete, and (b) that we ended up as a "have" when the game of conference realignment musical chairs stopped.

But at the moment there doesn't seem to be any need to continue completely with that strategy. All games should be played at the Dome barring a very, very unique circumstance. And while there's no reason to end the the NY's College Team branding, we should rethink how we're using our precious marketing dollars. Yankee Stadium signage and taxi ads don't seem to be the most effective way we can spend money anymore, IMHO.
Not taking the bait on the on the first sentence. I agree with this though.

I'm not sure that going from horrible too merely bad really drives much of a change though. And given our offensive struggles many of those 9 wins weren't particularly enjoyable to a fanbase that doesn't have much loyalty anyway.

Agreed, although Coyne can fix the preferred seating pricing. The empty seats between the 10 and 35 yard lines are embarassing, and are very much the results of a pricing structure that is out of whack given the venue. There's just no incentive to pay 2-3-4X to sit 10 yards closer to the 50 when (a) there is zero demand pressure, and (b) the cheap seats have views that are every bit as good as the more expensive ones.

Would you say Gross helped erase that buzz/jake comment or helped cement it (including hiring Grob, NYC ads etc)?

I'm in the camp that W's are the most important thing - and if we won - 90% of our attendance issues would be eradicated. I also believe that our AD's have worked against the idea of making it fun to go to sporting events (bounce houses aside).

they have had some good years when they stink at home. 2010. whatever stretch of time you wanna pick is going to be pretty unappealing to casual fans

there have been so many stinkers that there has to be a pretty significant chunk of fans who go occassionally that have given up after a consecutive string of absolute stinkers

you only hear from the few nerds that remember it. you're not hearing from people who dont. time erases it for the geeks who cared in the first place.

If not more so. Most people I know actually prefer the view in the cheap seats. If I want a view where I can't see plays develop, I'll stay home and watch on TV.

I brought my kids up to Syracuse for their first Dome experience last year when we played Maryland. They've been to some SU games at MetLife and Rentschler Field. After sitting through that debacle neither of them have any desire to go back. And mind you, my kids LOVE going to sporting events. They'll sit through and enjoy anything: independent league baseball, college hockey, etc. But they drew the line at SU football in Syracuse because it sucked.

That's not what I'm suggesting. I'm saying it's all part and parcel of a series of missteps. Losing is the worst - but it's all apart of the same less than desirable treatment of the fanbase over a prolonged period of time.

So you couldn't lock 'em up in the Dome? The sad thing was the Maryland game was probably the best offensive performance in the Dome all year long.

Yep, and yet the game was basically over at halftime. I mean, to some extent that's sports - even great teams lay an egg sometimes. And they actually did enjoy the weekend, and being on campus for a game day. But they basically only know SU football as being terrible, which puts a damper on them wanting to go again.

Yes

guy has been here less than a week- he aint making any decisions on football staff

he is going to spend time on football looking at dome upgrades and such-

start of the season he will be paying attention and will make a decision based on the outcome of the season- unless we look like last year from game 1 then maybe he gets a head start
