Crazy ending to the game

First I thought we won on Sales' catch. Then I thought maybe Nassib didn't get in on the sneak. Thankfully Holtz called a TO and we were able to score.

Some other thoughts:

-Nassib had a nice game. Can we tell him that USF is our opponent every week and tell Lemon we are playing UConn? A big reason for his success is the...

-The OL has played great as of late. The are doing a good job giving Nassib time and the running game is all them. Our RBs stink, speaking of which...

-Man do I really hope one of the RS RBs is good because we are being hurt by our current group. PTG is nothing more than a role player. Smith is a nice #2 back but he leaves lots of yards on the field and rarely makes a move. I give him credit for running hard through those holes (thanks OL) but he is not a threat. Which brings up personnel...

-Smith has shown a lack of hands so why is he in on 3rd and goal from the 5? PTG dances too much so why was he in on 4th and 1? Odd choices IMO. However...

-Great call going for it on 4th and 1. I wonder if Krautman was hitting his FGs does Marrone kick it there? Sticking with RK...

-What the hell is wrong with Krautman? This is ongoing for nearly two years now. I hope we have a plan B to at least push for the job next year. While we are on pushing...

-Our D got pushed the around. Awful job. The LBs were totally invisible and the weakness of the unit truly showed. I really don't get what happened out there. At first I thought maybe it was system. Pitt, RU, and UConn all used more pro style while USF used more of a spread. However we did a great job against NW's spread so that can't be it. Hopefully it was just a bad day as Cincy and UL are better teams. Staying with the D...

-I thought Lyn made a lot of nice plays out there. He did get beat for the TD but that was a great throw. Another playmaker who was huge...

-How about Esk with the blocked punt? I still don't get how Esk or Desir cannot break through at FS. Those two make a lot of plays out there. Which is a decision made by the...

-Coaching was all over the place. The team was sloppy, disorganized, and undisciplined again. That is getting old at this point. However kudos for getting the kids to "brush it off" after falling behind by 20 points.

-But then again the fact that we were down 23-3 to USF is unacceptable. The D was just lost all day. Another one of those hit or miss games by Shafer.

-The redzone play calling was just awful. The team tenses up and it seems like the coaches do too. The pace slows down and how many times do we need to take TOs there? What is the rule on losing a helmet? Can you take a TO and get the kid back in? If so awful job not using one to get Nassib on. I thought the 2nd half TO was dumb. TOs in the 2nd half are gold. I rather take a delay of game making it 3rd and goal at the 10 then use a TO. Risk, reward.

-I thought it was a good call on the last play. Passing gives you two cracks at a score while a run would have been a one player.

-2 point conversions. IMO we should have gone for 2 after the first TD. I want to try and cut it down to 1 there because I have no faith in the D making a stop. If you make it then USF can get a TD and you are still in the game. If you don't make it then you are down 3. Yes you take away the chance of a game winning FG, but you cannot lose by going for 2. You can lose by going for 1. The last TD, we should have taken a knee. You are not losing by a FG there. Why risk a return or a blocked PAT?

A win is a win is a win. That is all that really matters. Hopefully we can have more games where we put things together for more than one half. We will need to do so in the next three games. Just need to win one of three to have a really good shot at a Bowl. The season was on the line last week. It was such an important game. Now the next two we won't have to exactly be on edge. Hopefully with the added margin of error (which we haven't had since the Minny L), will allow everyone to be a lot more looser. It has been a long line of "must win" games.

Silly me I forgot to mention Sales. What a job he did getting his foot down. I hate the college rule where you could technically catch a WR in mid air at the hash mark and then carry him to the sideline and the pass will be incomplete.

You can't take a TO to avoid the helmet rule. Nassib still has to miss 1 play.

Problem is that you are now forced to use RGLCL in a passing situation, so we ended up wasting a play rather than risk him throwing a pass.

Not sure what games you have been watching. Smith bulls for 130 yards in each of the past two games, and you think he stinks????

The OL is playing better and has finally created some holes, but Smith moves defenders after the first contact. By creating a genuine run threat, Smith opened up the passing game. If you want to say he lacks a third gear that would have got him to 200 yard games, OK. But give him big credit for leading the running attack.

I don't think he stinks. I think he is serviceable but he is not as good as Bailey let alone any of the other starting RBs we have had in the past. He isn't a guy the other team has to really worry about stopping and isn't a threat to ever take one to the house. He hits the holes hard, I credit him for that. However I credit most of his yards to the OL not him. He rarely gets extra yards and goes down pretty easy. His next cut will be his first cut. If there isn't a big hole he runs into his OL and falls. He is a middle of the pack Big East RB, which isn't saying much.

they are who we thought they were. we see the good plays and wonder how there can be bad plays. they are college players playing hard. Be happy

Smith and Gulley are fine.. You make some good points but always get carried away dealing in absolutes trying to make yourself look more astute than you actually are. I doubt you played many sports throughout your life because you speak of as things are white and black or easy. You fail to realize that the other team is out there to trying to win games as well... Sorry

The redzone playcalling was better than I've ever seen it. We mixed it up a ton and if players hadn't screwed up on a couple of plays we would have been 100%. Don't know what game you were watching.

Smith has actually impressed me in watching him lately, I dont agree with your assessment of him one bit. And Krautman is one week removed from bing the special teams player of the week. His freshman year exceeded so many expectations that his average season seems a whole lot worse.

125 carries, 615 yards on the year (4.9 avg.). Respectable chance to go over 1,000 with four games left. Seems like more than a #2 to me...

Jerome Smith is definately better than a #2 back. However after him we have a short yardage back and a #5 back.

A game with a crazy ending and we won it.

We had three points out of two possessions inside the 10. That is great? Even is Krautman hits that FG it is disappointing.

No. Lose your helmet and you're out the next play. TO's don't enter into it.

Dude, Smith dropped a td pass my dog would have caught and the same guy tried to dive in from the two where if he had just lowered, his shoulders he would have walked in. How in the hell is that red zone playcalling?

No. Lose your helmet and you're out the next play. TO's don't enter into it.

It is such a silly rule. You can take a blow to the head with a penalty called and stay in despite the helmet coming off. Meanwhile a loose helmet coming off with not shot to the head, you have to come off. How exactly does that protect the player?

I can't comment on the safety committee's thoughts, but I assume their thinking is that if you take a hard enough shot that your helmet comes off, the best course of action is to go to the sideline to be checked out. Do they actually have to check out a player who gets his helmet knocked off and has to sit out a play? I don't know.

The rule's intent is to encourage players to wear their helmets more securely which, in turn, would protect players.

How about a rule that nobody can play unless they have their helmet on?

Very good post. I think you are a bit hard on the RBs, especially Smith. He isn't Bailey or Carter, but he's been a bit better than serviceable. He runs hard. Agree with you on Gulley though.

I think Gulley has run real hard this year...havent seen the holes open up for him as they have for Smith at times. I think hes been a nice compliment and has held on to the ball for the most part.
