I've been reading more threads on this board about our tradition of standing to clap until we score a basket. I don't know if I've heard anyone say anything positive about it. I am also hearing radio commentators and some writers questioning why we do this, as well as regular fans who post on syracuse.com and friends I talk to about it.

People seem tired of it, and it does appear to put some stress on our teams. We do not want to put stress on our teams, do we? So the question is: how does a tradition get un-traditioned? Who decides?

I am asking you because you always seem to be In the Know with the Powers That Be.

Got it from the New Mexico Lobos.

We did it at Manley back in the 1970s. I do believe the tradition was liberated from The Pit in Albuquerque.

Correct. Only the Lobos stood and clapped until the opposing team scored, I believe.

SU Students in the Manley Zoo modified the tradition and adopted it as their very own.

IMO, wanting to change or eliminate this is an insult to the tens of thousands of SU students who have carried on this tradition for almost 40 years. Students who made the Zoo and the Dome one of the greatest college basketball experiences ever (unless you're on the other team).

I don't believe for a second it puts "stress on our team." Sometimes we have a scoring drought to start a half, sometimes we score within seconds of the opening tip. That's just how it is.

It seems the height of narcissism to see that and think, "Well, it must be because of something I'm doing."

I can remember at 10 years old watching John Wallace, he was my hero, and the rest of the 1995-1996 team and standing every game. I would stomp on the metal bleachers to make more noise. We've had season tickets in section 123 since before I was born and I will never forget the excitement I had when standing for the first basket as a kid on those metal bleachers. Too bad I know live in South Carolina and my sister has out season tickets, she's the last family
Member in syracuse, I how I miss the dome.

We will Never Change this tradition no matter what.

Ps sorry I could not add anything about the tradition itself or anything actually relevant. This thread just brought back good memories. LGO

Yeah, that whole notion of home court advantage is just a lot of hooey.

No "power-that-be" is going to say stop something like that to 30,000-plus people, including a few thousand students. My guess is that if some "power" told people to stop... it would just enforce their desire to continue.

Such things are organic. Maybe it will die of its own old age. Maybe not. In any event, it will either stop or not stop... because the fans want it to. I never stand at the Dome, btw. I sit in an area without risers, and it would be unfair to the people behind me to stand for some unpredictable period at the beginning of each half.

I knew you weren't a "real fan".

1977-78 season. My sr year. We did get it from New Mexico. And it isn't going anywhere. We don't change our winning ways at the cuse.
Yes, when we played in the Lobo Classic. Same year we played Michigan St in the final of the Carrier Classic (with freshman Magic Johnson). JB was incensed after each final (we won both) that Marty Byrnes was not named MVP of the tournaments. He was righteously p!ssed.

No one ever suggested you can't psyche up your team. I'm saying the team isn't emotionally invested enough in you to get "stressed" by you clapping.

let's hope our team is not so fragile that they're discombobulated by "clapping."
