CTO - a question for you

Thought I read that we got it from New Mexico St or something like that.

I agree it's kinda dumb and quite pointless.
Correct. We took it from New Mexico.

Yes, when we played in the Lobo Classic. Same year we played Michigan St in the final of the Carrier Classic (with freshman Magic Johnson). JB was incensed after each final (we won both) that Marty Byrnes was not named MVP of the tournaments. He was righteously p!ssed.
And Jim has been pissed ever since. ;)

Does New Mexico still do it? I don't watch much college bball anymore except Syracuse so I don't know.

People complain we dont have enough traditions for football and here we are trying to mess with a basketball tradition. Its something we do!!! Although it may not be the coolest tradition in the world, everyone equates it with Syracuse Basketball.

No "power-that-be" is going to say stop something like that to 30,000-plus people, including a few thousand students. My guess is that if some "power" told people to stop... it would just enforce their desire to continue.

Such things are organic. Maybe it will die of its own old age. Maybe not. In any event, it will either stop or not stop... because the fans want it to. I never stand at the Dome, btw. I sit in an area without risers, and it would be unfair to the people behind me to stand for some unpredictable period at the beginning of each half.

Why is it unfair to those behind you?

Presumably they are standing also while you are standing and clapping. When you sit, they have to sit behind you whilst you are sitting watching the game on chairs that are not on risers. Why is standing different?

Me thinks it would be unfair to you for those behind you to get upset because you are standing participating in this time honored tradition!

I've never been an enthusiastic fan of it only because I graduated from SU 20 years before the clapping started. Because of that and the fact that we stole it from another school, I always had an underlying feeling that it was a 'manufactured tradition'. However it certainly doesn't bother me, I don't object to it and I would never suggest that it be discontinued.

Completely disagree with this sentiment. We have so few traditions. For a top 5 bball and top 15 FB program, it's AMAZING how few traditions we have.

Why kill one that people actually participate in? Makes no sense.

I've been reading more threads on this board about our tradition of standing to clap until we score a basket. I don't know if I've heard anyone say anything positive about it. I am also hearing radio commentators and some writers questioning why we do this, as well as regular fans who post on syracuse.com and friends I talk to about it. People seem tired of it, and it does appear to put some stress on our teams. We do not want to put stress on our teams, do we? So the question is: how does a tradition get un-traditioned? Who decides? I am asking you because you always seem to be In the Know with the Powers That Be.

It's lost a lot over the years. Personally, I love it. I do it at home when I'm watching on the tube (full disclosure:oops:). If you grew up in the formative years of the program, it's a birthright. We just don't do it the way we used to! I remember the SSS drum keeping the beat & the whole dome (or Manley) absolutely rocking! We would continue to clap just as loud during foul shots and never let up whatsoever during timeouts! Today's version pales in comparison ... That's why it sucks now. Fans don't take pride in it for the most part like they used to.

As a Syracuse University student and someone who has gone to games since I was 2 years old, I love the stand and clap. First, it's just about the only time everybody in the dome is standing up at the same time. Second, it doesn't put any pressure on the players. If the team hasn't scored by the second TV timeout, whether people are standing and clapping or not doesn't make a difference because I'm pretty sure they'll be reminded by Coach Boeheim and the rest of the coaches who at that point probably wouldn't be very happy. Third, who else does it? It's unique to us and it's been a tradition for 36 years from what I've read. As others have mentioned, people complain about us not having enough traditions, so why get rid of this one?

Because the two people who sit behind me are two short, elderly women who have supported the team for decades. If they stood behind me while I was standing... they would not see anything but the back of my head. If I am seated, they can see the court.

Everyone who uses my seats gives them the same courtesy.

I stand at home, at the bar, in the MSG garden, at the dome, in the car, the TD garden, the Rock(SH), Georgetown, NIT Games(Yep), ESPN Classic Games, and when I poop if the SU game starts before I'm ready. So all home games I stand.

1977-78 season. My sr year. We did get it from New Mexico. And it isn't going anywhere. We don't change our winning ways at the cuse.
Yes, I remember being at Manley when this was introduced. '77-78 seems about right.

Nice to know civility isn't completely dead.

Out of curiosity, do the people on either side of you along the front row stand and clap or sit as well?

the clapping stays. When I go to tournament games I stand and clap and people say can u sit down, I say no, this is how we roll in the cuse. They the say, oh wow that is cool!!!!

Tell them to kick rocks from now on.
