Culpepper

For a 4th year player in the system, I’m disappointed in his pocket presence and seemingly inability to locate second/third options.

Agree with your take. Not sure it's time to pull the plug on TD , but culpepper pressuring him is not a good sign. The fact that culpepper is still our 2nd option is disturbing in and of itself. I thought at one point we brought in some kids to challenge TD, , but the transfer hurt. I dont think TD is too comfortable, but think he is lacking development. Whether its multiple qb coaches and voices in his ear, or whatever. At the end of the day, we all believed dinos influence would mould him, and that's the concerning part.

My bad. I took the posts to mean you were excited in what the offense could do when Welch came in
Not excited. I'm sure the maintenance guys were afraid of the turf he damaged with some of his throws. But he seemed to deal with pressure better and attempt to spread the ball around more.

The one thing I can't shake about Devito was a very respected poster on here, someone I think connected, said some coaches (not SU coaches) were concerned about him when the lights came on. Looks great in the summer 7-on-7 but the game was a different story.

There’s a reason the Don Bosco teams he played on were average at best. 4-star in a summer camp doesn’t work, as we have seen and has become extremely clear.

This has been mentioned by many but it’s important. First reads are first reads for a reason but the defense is out there for a reason too and often they do their job. Quick decisions through progressions are incredibly important. The issue is if it’s not there quickly, it’s too often one step forward, 3 back and a scramble to the right and then... nothing.

I mean let’s not act like he hasn’t came on in relief and won a game with everyone counting us out. It’s happened before and can happen again I feel

average at best? His junior year bosco was 9-3 against a national schedule, won a state championship, was ranked #20 in the country and Tommy was 1st team all state.

That was a good year, but what about his senior year? There was a big fall off I believe.

I’m not ready to write him off, but this performance was discouraging. Take some chances. Scale back on the “he’s not open” and try to fit it in there. Eric did this.

That game is ancient history now and he had just one job sling it downfield.

That was then and this is now. I’m not saying his receivers were prefect. However like last year he mainly focused on one receiver Taji. Holds the ball to long because he lacks confidence to throw in a window. He doesn’t throw a lot of ints because he does not try to make them.
my feelings Dino will give him to game 5 because the ol. If the offense continues to be in effective there will be a change.

And he should have been picked in that nc game when we came on relief but the receiver made a great play.

i was responding to a post about “then” saying his bosco teams were average at best.

his senior year was a drop off. They went 6-5 but still won their league and lost to the same Paramus team in the regular season and in the semis of the state playoffs. Their other 3 losses were to teams from Florida, PA, and Ohio. They play a national schedule. He was 2nd team all state that year. The year after Tommy left they went 2-8 and finished last in their league.

Not so. Babers first two years Philips was the second leading reciever with 90 and 89 catches. We had a legitimate 1-2 punch with other productive guys. Estime and Ishmael had 48 catches each in 2016. In 2018 we didn't have one stud like those first two years but had 4 guys with between 40 and 64 catches. Last year was the most imbalanced with Jackson getting 66 and the next two getting 36 and 37. Harris actually had fewer catches in 2019 despite him being the 4th in catches in 2018 and 2nd in 2019.
The numbers don't lie. Sorry but that's as clear an indictment of the qb play as can be.

They don't lie, but it's hard to interpret exactly all that they say. 2016 was the most productive passing year. 2018 was the most balanced between passing and rushing but had no dominant reciever. How much was the qb? How much was the recievers? How much was the OC? How much was the oline?

I really wish we had a functional running game and oline to fairly judge our qb play. My feeling is that we would still see a lack of intrinsic feel but would see some great throws because he wouldn't be under pressure as often.

I would argue that the receiving talent was better in 2019. Yet catches went down for all but our #1 who basically hit a plateau. Qualitatively the utilization of the slot guys and quick game, especially in obvious blitz and pressure situations was night and day, and in my opinion the most glaring element that explained the offensive struggles. The quick digs and comebacks to the slot when the defense shows zone or lb's playing cloud literally have no answer, we saw this regularly with Dungey and they even used it to set up vertical routes when the defense adjusted to squeeze these routes. That has disappeared. Why? The ball should be out of the pocket within 1 to 1.5 seconds at least half or a third of the time to neutralize the linebackers and dbacks being involved in pressures. But why when they show pressure and then commit to rushing, why does the qb hold the ball and continue to keep his eyes on his primary read? QBs at every level are taught to come off their read in this situation and get the ball out. Why does TD consistently not do this? Coaching? Are they really telling him "lock onto your pre snap read and don't come off him even if you take a sack!" Can any one confirm this is what's going on?

It wouldn't be the worst thing in the world if he was Terrel hunt just panicking and taking off if the first read isn't there. Shouldn't be taking so many sacks with a one read guy

Disclaimer I haven't watched one second of that game and I never will
