Amazing amount of jealousy by Rutgirls and UConn fans. First Rutgirls had about a 200 post thread on it now UConn is starting one. Bottomline: Which University is in the state of NY? Hopefully the ACC can take the B12's slot in the Pinstripe Bowl. Keeping it with the nBE as the other opponent would be fine...but the Big 10 would be awesome too.

The reaction of the Rutgers people, and to the UConn people to a lesser degree, is because this claim by SU threatens what they think/know is the only real card they have to play. Being surrounded by millions is all they have to offer even though most of those people are relatively uninterested in college sports in general and Rutgers college sports in particular.

The hope is that somehow Rutgers can awaken interest in this huge body of humanity. They can't point to an actual existing large fan base, nor to tradition or to even recent success against real D1 competition. All they have is a "potential" fan base. If that hope dissipates, they have nothing.

It's not jealousy, it's just kind of funny the University of Maryland is closer to Yankee Stadium than Syracuse but you guys keep pushing this "New York's College Team" down everyone's throats.

It's definitely good publicity to have Syracuse in Yankee Stadium, but you could have had just a billboard with Syracuse University on it and omitted New York's College Team.

It just seems a little bit ridiculous, that a private school, 4.5 hours away from New York, out of the blue just starts an ad campaign boldly claims to be New York's College Team.

By comparison, you don't see the Buffalo Bills parading around as New York's NFL Team, because they are upstate and the Giants and the Jets play in Jersey.

New York STATE's team, were bigger than just the city.

Also, the city is only 3.5 to 4 hours away not 4.5.

Sounds like jealousy to me.

This post pretty much confirms how smart of an idea it is.

Dumb analogy considering the fact that neither the Giants nor the Jets have New Jersey in front of those names.

What I love about this is the simple fact that both UConn and Rutgers fans have insisted in the past that Syracuse was done as a major football program because it's not a state school. And they have puffed out their chests about how proud they are to represent the states of Connecticut and New Jersey respectively and that Syracuse could never attain that type of status in New York State.

But then along comes TGD and he decides SU should try to assume the role of a state school through marketing (is it our fault that no SUNY school has become a major athletic university?) it's "How dare they!"

We are, by deeds, by interest, and a little bit by default, New York (State's) College Team. Nutmeg and Rutgirls fans, my word of advice is - "Get used to it".

Cheers,
Neil

It didn't "just start". The slogan has been used for years. If you only watch Yankee baseball then it might seem to be new.

I do wish them good luck in their big east (patriot league) future. And suddenly syracuse is no where near New york except when we play at MSG in hoop. It's a home game for syracuse when that happens. Make up your minds guys.

Smells like jealously to me. Also, no way in hell you can drive from College Park to Yankee Stadium quicker than Syracuse to Yankee Stadium. Sure College Park may be a few miles closer...but what is the easier drive? Maybe you should brand yourself as Southern New England's Team.

It's definitely good publicity to have Syracuse in Yankee Stadium, but you could have had just a billboard with Syracuse University on it and omitted New York's College Team. Yes it is good publicity, Why omit it? It is called marketing and has brand awareness. If Rutgers or UConn are unhappy spend some money or better yet fill up a game against St John's Univ at MSG with 15,000 of your own fans. One more point: this is also about attracting regular students to apply to Syracuse.

It just seems a little bit ridiculous, that a private school, 4.5 hours away from New York, out of the blue just starts an ad campaign boldly claims to be New York's College Team. Not sure if you are upset Syracuse is private or somehow in 2005 they instituted a long range strategic plan to get into a better conference. Are you suggesting they start a campaign first stating they are Onondaga County's team and grow it from there?

By comparison, you don't see the Buffalo Bills parading around as New York's NFL Team, because they are upstate and the Giants and the Jets play in Jersey. Apples and Zebras, as the Giants/Jets dominate downstate...no one college dominates downstate...great idea by TGD to start this campaign...looking forward to joining the ACC. Finally, name the major college sports team in NY State? Me thinks that qualifies to validate the marketing.

They are all just haters because their schools weren't smart or forward thinking enough to have thought of that phrase or advertise in a venu like Yankee Stadium.

or prestigious enough

I don't even understand why people in Connecticut think they have some huge connection with New York. I can see people in upstate Jersey having a connection. UConn is closer to Boston anyway.

I was at the game. Sucked as a Mets fan, but the sign looked great!

Also, for Jersey State fans...stop copying us

I don't know that sign was probably seen by hundreds at the game and by 10's on the Internets

skip to 3:05 mins for your viewing pleasure.

Tens of thousands! Coach Flood pulled some strings and got the video on Deadspin. Damn him, now everyone knows Rutgers is Newark's College Team!

For one, New York is a state, not just a city. I'm shocked you don't seem to be aware of this. We are essentially New York State's college team, seeing that there are no relevant state school's that play major D1 athletics. And again, why wouldn't we try to market in our State's largest city again? This really shouldn't be that difficult to understand.

By the way, even if you think its 4 hours from Syracuse to NYC (which its not by the way -- I do it in 3:30 all the time), do you think that the University of Nebraska for example does any advertising or has any pull in the western part of its state which is 7 hours away from its Lincoln campus? Just an example, but you really need to stop being so hung up on the distance factor.
