Daemen Postgame Thoughts.

Red is going to have a difficult time giving everyone minutes. The guards all looked great and Judah didn’t even play. Taylor is going to have to play to spread the floor. Benny struggled the most on defense outside of Bell, but I think he likely plays 25-30 minutes. At some point a few guys are going to be unhappy.

With Judah, Westry, and Brown? Absolutely.

Would be like Houston, Auburn, VCU, etc. games.
I’m counting Westry out of this years rotation. I know he’s only out temporarily, but it’s going to be hard for him to come in and move ahead of someone like Cope.

Glad you noticed the same with Benny. He seems like he's a step slow, once his man put's in the floor he doesn't react instinctively but waits and is a step behind. Forward coach needs to work more with him on this.

If Westry comes back midseason too….

I don’t know what you even do? Judah/JJ get at least 30.

I’m not married to Benny getting 25-30 though.

If Copeland/Westry are outplaying him, I’d be intrigued by going small and putting Taylor at the 4.

I think this is why JB hated having too many guys. It got too complicated. The easy thing would be to give Copeland the other 20, but Cuffe looks intriguing too.

Yes. Had his moments. Looked like a talented and athletic guy who hasn’t played a real game in awhile. Definitely belongs and could be a player. Hard to see a real big role this year with Judah and JJ, but I bet he’ll have some games where he contributes.

He hit what, 3 3’s?

Had at least 2 swats, in limited minutes -
for a dude that’s 6’2”, that’s incredible.

I’m a fan.
Kid’s a baller.

I’m not going to knock Red too hard, but I don’t think JJ should have played 40 tonight. Taylor probably should have sat a bit more too. He got tired. It will be interesting to see what tendencies he inherits from JB.

Exhibition games don’t always show a lot. We’re definitely playing faster. Three point defense was not good. Individual defense needs to get better so guys don’t have to help so much. That’s why they got so many open threes Benny did some good things on offense, but he’s a turn style on defense. Really, really bad. Cuffe is a solid player. You can tell he learned defense by playing under Self at Kansas. He has very little wasted energy or movement. Excellent at getting in the passing lanes. Defensive rebounding was pretty good, but very few second chance points. Second half was not good. Not having Brown was a factor in the second half. Red needs to be careful with rotations and combinations on the floor. Playing a deep bench is good, but you have to have a purpose with your rotations and not just getting players time. Carey is a walking foul. McCloud can be a force. Only he or Brown should play center. Taylor plays solid defense and has a strong body. His defense is night and day better than Bell. Bell had a hard time guarding anyone without fouling. I’m not sure how Red is going to find time for Cuffe, Copeland, Westry, Taylor and Bell when Judah and JJ will get major minutes. Focus and intensity have to be maintained for longer stretches. Not good in second half. Red has quite a few answers, but they have a long ways to go. Big, strong power players are going to be a problem.

The guys who don't play hard don't get the minutes. I think what Copeland and Cuffe showed should give confidence JJ can rest more going forward. Not having Judah or Chance throws in a monkey wrench into everything minutes wise not to mention playing a smaller team. It won't be easy but it's going to be about matchups and guys getting their opportunities in certain matchups vs every night.

I hope somebody asks him about JJ's 40 in the presser. I'm not mad about it or anything, just genuinely curious.

My guess is conditioning and/or as many live point guard reps as possible. Maybe just pressing to get whatever swagger he lost at Notre Dame all the way back. He is going to be such a problem once he's settled in.

You can see why he and Judah together is a nightmare to guard. Also though they are what makes things go. They will make guys like Benny and JT better.
