Daemen Postgame Thoughts.

He's a 6-6 guard who can get to the rim. You're forgetting that.
It was against Damian College a Division 2 team.. Let’s see what he does in Maui and against ACC teams. He could be a good college player with upside, but to talk like he’s an NBA player is a little presumptuous.

He was showing the same thing against his own teammates in the 2 scrimmages. They are decidedly not Division 2.

Anyone have the box score? Copeland was a stat stuffing machine.

For those of you who asked about stats/box score here it is to accompany llandz's Copeland line:

Interesting game. Great to watch Starling and a team that actually runs the floor although they better get better. This was a nice win but only by 13 to Daemen. To me it should have been 22 as it was at the end of the first half.

We need to practice our man D. We seem like we are just running around trying to keep up with our man right now - first game, we'll get there.

People have been down on Benny but I saw a few rebounds where it seemed like he was above the rim with his feet - his VJ must be very very good.

Taylor proved he has a nice smooth 3 in the first half. The team looked together first half - not so much second.

Say what you want about Copeland the kid has some skills that will come in handy and he was the top scorer.

JJ was a rocket distributing and just playing ball.

Cuffe is a little gem waiting to be discovered.

If only we could run and shoot the way we did with our two guards Douglas / Thompson. Perhaps we will when Judah is playing with JJ. I hope they have their own combo moves together - that should be special.

I don't expect too much from this team - first year together, we'll see how it plays out, maybe they'll surprise me. We go to Maui - watch out! There we'll see how much we have and what our true team looks like.

I was glad Autry played as many as he did -first game, first time seeing what he has. Hope we have a good season. Red has done a very good job taking over managing and now getting his first win.

Thanks for this, I searched after the game and couldn't find one!

Either way, promising prices to meld into a cohesive unit. Excited to see the starting lineup next game with Judah alongside JJ (if Judah plays).

Think he might be our designated "cat rescuer" this year. Makes sense to RS him.
Totally agree on the RS but just thinking they could give him a few tastes of college ball before the RS started. Sounded like Red said the other night he was available but lot of players to get in!

Redshirting Patterson concerns me. If Hima is gimpy, we’re a McLeod ankletwist away from having either Brown or Carey playing significant minutes at center, and neither is a real center. Both of those guys would be exploited like Marek was. We can’t be a good team with heavy reliance on those two at the 5.

If this means that Patterson really isn’t at the level to even serve capably compared to Brown/Carey, then it concerns me that we recruited him, even with the bromide that ‘big guys always take longer to develop.’

Whtevs. Still seems odd that in an exhibition where we were up 22 at half we couldn’t find a few minutes to see what he is. That sorta indicates to me that even in the safe, friendly confines of practice, he’s not up to the level. I hope that’s not the case, and we just struggled too much in the second half with the expected Minutegetters and he would have played If we could have maintained the larger lead.

I can live with the hypothetical of the 13th guy not being ready in a pinch. It certainly is better than worrying about the 8th or 9th guy not being ready as we have experience of recent.

I honestly cannot remember a year ever where we had 5 centers….and you’re concerned that we’re redshirting the 6 10 freshman who weighs about 140 lbs? I think we need to settle down here.

If the situation gets desperate, we stop redshirting Patterson.

It’s probably good to redshirt Patterson but he is not 6’10 / 140.

I don’t think we have five centers. That was the point.

I may be remembering wrong, but did he block that layup attempt with essentially a standing vertical jump?

Then he grabbed a rebound from the clouds over everyone. His athleticism was very apparent.
Reminds me a bit of dion

People need to slow down on the Copeland talk. He doesn’t have any skill that translates NBA. Not elite speed, athleticism and not a good shooter. He’s a good passer and plays with energy.
MCW couldn’t shoot.

I was surprised Patterson didn’t even get a few garbage minutes.
I think you are really underestimating Malik Brown. He isn’t Marek. Malik embraces physical contact and is already stronger than Marek was as a senior. Read the player interviews (PS?) most said Brown would be the best football player on the team. I expect to see 25 minutes a game at center for Brown.
The exception being Purdue, UNC and maybe Duke. He can guard any teams backup center easily to get at least 10-15 minutes at center.

Yes, that was obviously an exaggeration. Point is the kid is an absolute rail right now. He'll get there I hope but this year he won't.

He isn't going to the NBA. Can't believe I have to write that. And agree with what you are saying.

Super happy to have him on our team, for sure.

NBA, not a chance.

Red can un-redshirt someone at any time. When Zion was injured, Coach K burned Joey Baker's red shirt season but putting him in the game at Syracuse, which was late in the season. That meant the season counts as a real season and not a redshirt season. So if necessary, Patterson can be thrown in the fire at any time. But Patterson isn't going to be needed this year. If McLeod gets injured, I'm guessing we would be better off with 30-35 minutes of Brown, with a bit of Hima (or maybe Carey, who knows) when needed for rests and foul trouble. I hope Griff is still high on him developing into a player for us, which I think he is. Probably two years away.

Judah and JJ are going to make this team go. That's what I'm excited about. Really hope Westry can get back and stay healthy.

Like our pieces, but someone like Benny isn't going to jump into being an AA, I just wish he'd leverage his athleticism more and try to dominate on boards, getting to the rim, getting fouled, etc. C'est la vie. Seems like he's getting better incrementally with his shot, but I don't think it will be materially different in tough competition.

I was the president of the Maliq Brown Fan Club last year. I am looking forward to him being a productive and smart player this year.

Hoping for productivity from JT and Cope once we hit real competition. If one of them can bring it against good competition, great. If it's both, watch out.

I'm not nervous, but watching how the center position plays out and how that translates to what we do on offense (MB vs McL in the game, for example).

TBD on Cuffe. Like taking the shot with him.

Back to the main point, to me, it's Judah and JJ's show. Keep them healthy and let's see what we can do.

I think it’s great that Patterson is redshirting. This picture sure doesn’t show a 6’10 and 140 lb player. (Carey is reported as the lightest center at 205 lbs, Patterson at 220). SU offered Patterson after his attendance at their elite camp. They know what they are getting and wanted him. Allen did a great job with Jesse but remember his first 2 years at SU he averaged just 6.9 and 8.9 minutes/game before coming into his own as a junior. Centers take time. Working with Patterson for an entire year will benefit both William and SU by bringing him along a more developed and polished center next season. Looking forward to his progress. This year, I imagine matchups could determine which of our other center candidates play. Awesome to have options.

Brown is a power forward who in certain matchups and circumstances could play center. Against Daemon, Benny played center for a while, despite not being a center too. DC is an example of a power forward playing center for us sometimes despite being a power forward. We have options now and we are being more fluid on position play. We may play 3 guards sometimes despite one being in the forward position too.

Copeland is the Josh Pace of this team. Obviously different games but in terms of impact that's who he is. Just with a lot more flair and communication.

I think he can get to be Josh Pace.

He isn't quite there yet. Josh Pace was a baller and more productive early on. And, Josh Pace was key on a title team year 2.

With all that said, I love me some Q. Love him. This isn't to knock him, I just am protecting the pride of Griffin, Georgia, Josh Pace.

Reread my first paragraph.
If you ignore that, you can count to 15 and put anyone at the 5.
