A serious option for our next Coach.

He sounds like a good punt if we were, say... dropping down to the patriot league.

That would be his next logical step and station... D1 low or mid-majpr.

You don't walk into a P4 HC job from D2.
A number of years ago, Lowell won the D-2 title. The game was played in Spfd Mass and I was at the game. UMass had an opening that year. He couldn't get an interview. Not even an interview.

One week ago you started a thread about how to rebuild the basketball program. Your number 1 bullet point was to "hire an up and coming coach...not a retread."
I know. And he's perfect

So what. Gerg got an interview and the job.
I expect better thinking from you.

Bryan Hodgson. He checks every box for me. 37 years old, WNY native who grew up a ‘Cuse fan, runs a modern uptempo system, & anyone questioning his ability to recruit needs to simply look at his wife.
Plus he was the ace recruiter and top assistant during Nate Oats rise @ Buffalo & Alabama.
Brought Ark St from the bottom of league standings to the top his 1st and 2nd seasons.
He is clearly the most obvious choice.

Do you know why?

D-2 coaches don't seem to be held in the same regard as D-1 ass'ts. Powell at AIC was great. As was Larranaga. And they had to go the D-1 ass't route. A.D.'s must not think they have the recruiting experience needed.

I understand that thinking as it is the safer move. I really don't know what Syracuse should do. My opinion is that while recruiting is important it isn't as important as it used to be.
SU will by all accounts have enough money to be competitive but we have to spend it wisely. Roster construction and excellent coaching are the combination needed. Every team needs players. In Syracuse case we won't be able to just buy wins. We will need excellent coaching and unfortunately I seriously doubt that at this point in his career Red is going to improve very much. SU is cheap and loyal so I believe Red is here for another two years. It's not good but I don't believe it will change.

I believe Red is here for another two years.
Do you realize the dome would be absolutely empty by that point? I’m talking attendance of 0 unless they count concession workers and staff.

We got 15K for Duke this year.
A good coach and some excitement can get that number back to 30K.
That's an extra million dollars in the school's coffers based on one GAME. 2K more fans a game over the course of a season would be ~3 million.

I'm tired of the gaslighting. This school can absolutely afford an elite coach. It just has to be willing to take a chance.

The first wave of season tix renewals will be the first bellweather barometer for the AD and BOT.

If renewals are way down, decision makers will rightly get antsy.

The laws of economics and diminishing returns/deficits may come home to roost.

There will be sober beancounting and home game attendance projections.

They may not be able to afford to sit on their hands here.

The University Chancellor, and BOT don't care what the fans think. Red will get his 3rd year no matter what.

Different discussion. I know that. But when a change is made they need to invest in the future.

so I believe Red is here for another two years. It's not good but I don't believe it will change.

If things continue on this trajectory, that would be the worst case scenario for the program and fanbase.

It would also be beyond illogical, given the financial implications. Laughable, really.

Some of the names on this list are intriguing. FYI, Langel and Hodgson are farther down in the back half of the top 20. So they may still be available next season. I also wonder about Chris Mack or Richard Pitino, who are mentioned here in the intro as well. They don’t qualify because they’ve already been P5 head coaches. Honestly I think Pitino Jr could be great.

My preferences assuming we go the midmajor route:
1. Wade
2. Hodgson
3. Pitino
4. Josh Schertz (3-4 interchangeable)
5. Niko Medved

ETA: I don’t think JW is making a change this year because if it were a possibility there would be some smoke and there doesn’t seem to be any out there.

SU and Wildhack will ultimately hire someone they and we never heard of, you know, somebody who calls up and convinces them he is the guy to hire.

That would be preferable to the subpar approach they took last time.

What there is is total silence from JW.
