Damien Lee/Trey Lewis press conference

I assume you mean immediately after the season, not 'immediately'. Allowing 'immediate' transfer would only further incent schools to cheat in order to obtain premier talent in advance of the NCAA tournament.

Other than that, if the players were not involved with the situation that was the reason for the penalty, I have thought for a long time they should be allowed to walk.

Your assumption is correct - I meant immediately after the season. (After the penalty became effective).

I also agree with the "if" for the condition of a free transfer.

I kicked this idea around when we got hammered by the NCAA. Financial penalties / fines make a lot of sense to me.

But the more I thought about it, the more clear it became that even despite fines, that it would just make it easier for certain schools to cheat indiscriminantly. Imagine what UK would do if they didn't have to fear NCAA postseason bans--they'd break every rule and just pay the fines.

And they aren't alone. So ultimately, while financial penalties wouldn't punish the innocent [as you describe], I don't think they'd be much of a deterrent, either.

Agree 100%. How big would the financial penalties have to be (and how good would the detection system need to be) for UK not to simply use this as open season. I don't think a $10 million fine or penalty stops them especially if the majority of seasons they are not fined. The bidding for when UK might be deterred, starts at $50 million.

If the NCAA could be trusted to be fair and not the equivalent of the United Nations in coming to rational decisions then these schools wouldn't need to self-impose.

I am not saying this because I am a Syracuse fan but what the NCAA used as justification to demand a postseason ban from us was so minor that pretty much every NCAA investigation of guilt being found should have to include a postseason ban.
Weed/Fab Melo/YMCA was not enough for a postseason ban but the NCAA was vindictive against their target and nobody polices the police when it involves the NCAA.
Who is the IAD for the NCAA?

When imposing a ban a team should look at their roster if its full of Seniors it is a really tough to rationalize we were lucky only Rak Christmas was hurt by this last year. I felt bad for him but he took it like a real good sport. Nobody knows his true feelings as he kept them close.

What Louisville did may not be enough for the NCAA but they sacrificed 2 5th guys for hope of leniency and I hope the NCAA doesn't forget that.

Which is why having an effective date for self imposed bans makes sense to me. If on February 5, 2016, Louisville wants to show it is being pro-active it could still issue a self imposed ban -- but it would be for the 2016/2017 season, and the players could transfer after the season.

I am not against self imposed bans -- just the fact that they become effective immediately. Too easy for manipulation -- whether the Syracuse ban was strategic or not last year, many viewed it as fishy. Certainly Missouri should not get any leniency because they did not allow the 190th best team in the country to make a miracle run to get into the NCAA tourney. Now Louisville -- they took a real hit. Should they all be treated the same? It just becomes another factor to judge for the NCAA when they are already poor at making judgments.

BTW, I don't disagree that the decisions made by the NCAA are questionable at times, but I view that as a separate issue. But let's at least have a framework for when they become effective that is more fair to kids.

Mizzou should lose as many scholarships as we did.

I think this ban will help Louisville no doubt but the NCAA may want another season as well. UL had to have found some serious Level-1 violations to impose the ban on a top 16 team.

Setting up hookers for recruits. Can it really get much worse than that? Pitino acts like this was an injustice to his team. How many kids had a "great campus visit" and committed to Louisville because of it?
