Darrell Gill Jr. transferring to Ole Miss

If a guy from Arizona wants to transfer to a school in Arizona to make it easier for his family to watch him play, how to you stop that.

We lose Texas / West Coast kids all the time to the portal. And we gain NJ / East Coast kids from the portal who also want to be closer to home.

Move their family to Syracuse :-) Easy

Gill did not transfer to be closer to home. If given permission, after the dust settles I will fill in the why. Not until he announces where he is going. And only if they tell me it is ok to share.

Money, better prospects to make pros, uncertainy with syracuse’s chances of success next year, combo of above, who cares

I think overpaying for Gill so that his family can attend is smarter than trying to save money with TEMU WR and hoping that he is as good.

The guy has had three 100 yard receiving games in his career. One was against FCS. One was against a team that lost nearly everyone (and had a terrible pass D before that) and one was against UConn.

I wish we kept him, but I don't think we should have overpaid for him.

Any chance he comes back?

IDK. I have had no conversation since the day he announced. I am waiting. I don't want to get in the way of what is probably a busy time for them.
For sure.

I don’t think it’s the 50, it’s the fact that we need better/veteran talent. Most of those 50 losses were not higher end guys

Players get better over time. You need to hang on to more of them, if we are going to be a player-development kind of program.

It costs so much more money to buy a guy from the portal than to get a HS kid.
Portal prospects are usually proven commodities with potential to make an instant impact. High school recruits usually aren’t even physically ready for 1-2 years. There’s a reason some things are more expensive.

Well, our budget to date has seemed to be able to get 2nd string guys from P4 programs, and starters for G-5 programs. Yes, some of the lower level guys have proven themselves, but it's a step up.

As for the 2nd stringers from Georgia, Alabama or wherever, maybe a few of those have worked out for us, but not enough to count on those kind of guys.

I'm curious, if Gill played for anther P4 and was interested in SU, what the comments would be about his recruitment.

This team needs an OL and we saw when Angeli went out how badly they run blocked. Was it the scheme and or talent? Whatever it was because of that and the lack of a capable backup QB we saw Gill and the other receivers disappear.

I like Gill and he's a talented WR and his family was wonderful to be around. So whatever the reason he's leaving, yes it's a loss, but the core mentioned above HAS to be fixed first.
