Class of 2014 Darrius Liggins

although this is intriguing, let us not forget we have one committed DL (Williams) and we have strong ties with two others (Rodney and Slayton). its understandably hard for the staff to stop and change direction at this time when we've been working other recruits throughout and its late in the game. the staff has a plan and they are executing it to the best of their abilities. who knows, they may feel comfortable with the 3 mentioned or with another recent late add to bring the number to 4. also, real difficult to transition during the dead period for sure.
Good points.

None of us know what goes on behind closed doors.

This is just the peanut gallery, lol

Attrition is one of the reasons why I’m not real big on only casting a small net. USF had 16 kids in on official visits last weekend and we had zero. You should be hosting all of your B and C listers when you can because you may need to go that route.

You make a valid point, but I think this staff is confident in their ability to go out and get viable plan Bs if necessary. Getting Estime, Kimble, Cooper, Winfield, Moore and Scissum while scrambling to try and keep Marrone's recruits in place(not always successfully of course) shows they can do that. They like to bring in a smaller group of visitors so that they can really focus on the individual recruit and sell SU, and I think they do a really good job of that. Why they weren't willing or able to schedule anyone last weekend right before the dead period, I don't know, that puzzles me.

And we want this Carlin Clark kid too.

I agree with you phat but we shouldn't judge how the staff recruits until signing day.

Also want to point out that just because a kid was committed to another power 5 program, it doesn't mean he grades out well with our staff, is in their plans, or should be in their plans.

We will have 6 DE's next season. If we add Slayton (hopefully) that would be 7, and then there is Carlin, who obviously the staff likes, and is an area (and school) where it would benefit us greater to take a kid from. Unless Slayton, and Carlin chose to go else where I really don't see the need

It's what we have now and what we will be losing

"He would be a helluva pick up, at a key position of need with Welsh / Robinson both seniors next season"

Maybe the lack of depth on the interior DL is driving things. With only Crume returning with significant experience, one or both of Thompson and Johnson may be ticketing to slide inside. Bringing in some speed guys at DE could make the future of this unit scary athletic. I don't know nothin' ... just speculation.

Purdue loves him, fastest, most athletic D lineman on their board. I think without a doubt they will offer him soon.

I am all for it. You can never have enough D lineman. I was just basing that under the assumption of our depth at DE. I can definitely see Thompson sliding inside. As for Johnson I think he has enormous potential as a potential NFL DE. He would be the last one i move imo

I think Sloan drops some weight and takes over where Bromley left off and Lord willing big John Raymon can come back next year. Don't forget about Wayne Williams. We are losing Zian Jones this year as well aren't we?

tough seeing Raymon making it back in time.

I struggle to agree that Sloan ever makes it to the field consistently - sadly. Big and strong doesn't always equate to good fball players. Raymon has an awful break and would be more than surprised if he makes it back to football ready status in a year. This teams biggest need is defensive line athletes. Bromley had a great year yes, but we never had consistent pressure off the ends. If we had Chan/Sharpe this year, our defense would have been silly good. Hope the staff can bring in +3 defensive bigs in this class and I am not sold on WW as well. Love his passion, swag and size, but he has not played football in over a year and looks that way as well.,

C'mon Shafer & Co, reel em in!!!!

I forgot about Sloan. I am actually really high on Sloan from what I have seen from him in practices/scrimmages. I think he can fill in for Jones and not miss a beat. Wayne Williams is going to need some serious conditioning. He looked like he was close to 400lb. Losing Raymon was really a tough break, both for the kid, and the program. I'm curious if he had surgery yet. I know as of November there was still too much swelling, and he needed a total reconstruction. As of right now i can't even think of a 2 deep? Crume and Sloan are the only 2 with experience. I am sure the staff has a plan, i'd love to know what it was.

The verbal by Slayton is one of the reasons SU decided to keep Liggins at bay. BTW interest for the MIssissippi kid is extending every day, Iowa is the latest D1 school in the mix.

Thanks for the update OE and Merry Christmas. So does this mean the staff will continue to hold him at bay or now that slayton is in the fold go after Liggins or maybe Carlin Clark for the other side of the line. My feeling is we could take two DEs this year especially with hybrid Lb/DE Sykes going ND.

It is my understanding that Coach McDonald has another DE in his sights. Landing Slayton, borrowing a phrase, was tremendous!!!

Trust the coaches, but it seems crazy that they seem to overlook good players that are dropped into their lap. Frustrating from our perspective I guess

As long as they have players like this in front of players like that and are confident in their standing with them there is no problem.

In coach Shafer trust.

This is where McDonald earns his bones. It will be very interesting to see what he is able to dig up between now and NLI day. I wouldn't bet against him at this point.

I hope so, for the last several years we've wished for a few last minute gems and been mostly empty handed come NLI day. Hope this year with GMAC and the ACC that changes
