Day Nine Football Camp: Wed. August 9, 2017

the AET production will be interesting to replace.. Estimate on St but i dont think his WR production will be that tough. he went large stretches without being on the field last year. not sure how hard it will be to replace a TE that we hardly used.

Yeah, hopefully Pierce can really add to the production.

"Everyone thinks they know what happened to me," Dungey said, "but they're not doctors."

He said he could've played late in the season, and a second opinion from a non-SU doctor confirmed that belief after evaluating Dungey before Thanksgiving. But it wasn't enough for the team physician, Dr. James Tucker, to clear Dungey to play."

Hmmm...

Well after the few Steven articles, the Josh Allen "didn't know he was DQ'd" article and now this one, it seems to me that there may be a coordinated effort to get some anti-Tucker sentiment out in the public.

Guys, can't remember. Looking for some help. Obviously EAT had an unbelievable year last year but I can't rememeber if we heard anything in the preseason about him. If I remember correctly, he had the drops at Maryland and wasn't he just seen as an average Wr transfer at the beginning of the year? I think we upgraded at TE, I think we upgraded estimes position ( not his ST play but his WR play. He never really stood out, had the drops). EAT however will be hard to replace. I just wonder how much pub he got during training camp last year cause I don't remember

I don't remember all that much. It may have been mentioned that he was in position to start but not much more than that.

I expect our TE to have over 60 receptions this year. Kid is a future NFL player

I don't envision any one player replacing AET's [and Estime, who also was a major contributor], but rather lots of guys having the ball spread around, instead of a true #1 receiver [in a traditional sense]. Hopefully we have a combination of guys who are ready and able -- Philips is a stud, Ishmael really came on late, and hopefully Custis, Nykeim, Neal, etc. all prove to be the real deal.

AET was terrific last year, though -- no question about that. What a season he had. Looked like a man among boys.

Very interesting thought JB 44. Shining a light on things often creates movement.

Old mindset: We had an unbelievable talent and have lost talent, therefore it will be tough to replace.
New mindset: We have a system that takes talent and makes it better. The numbers will be there.

The question is, given our system and the improvements in year 2:

AET + Estime = Pierce + Butler/Custis + Johnson/Riley

I have to say the limited info we get from the every other day media , and only ten minutes at that is not enough. Even my son gives my very vanilla stuff . Pretty much the D is getting the better of the O still ( they know the plays ) I can't stand not seeing it for myself! Anybody going to a practice?
Ask your son if they are going to attend Coach Mac's services?

I don't remember all that much. It may have been mentioned that he was in position to start but not much more than that.
That was about it...heard he had talent but most thought he would be just an average receiver.

Or is the O line a problem ?

The D often dominates early, they rep with the offense soooo many times that they anticipate routes. At the end of the day, offense is mostly about deception and trickery. Tbats hard to accomplish against your own D.

I don't expect it to be a strength but, if I'm not mistaken, it's most of the same guys from last year. Hopefully with another year of maturity, year two in the system, and maybe a redshirt freshman pushing for playing time it's better than last year.

My hope is that the O has made incremental improvement and the D is just competing that much better right now.

Just over 3 weeks and we'll know... kinda.

I am excited about our OL talent and depth.

Hmmm...

Yup...another player all "tuckered" out...

OL talent is the area that concerns me the most heading into the season.
That's a pretty scary comment considering what our DL looks like at the moment. Need a huge influx of talent/bodies on defensive trenches...

Not me, i think we have talent and size and once they learn how to play as a unit we will be just fine. Love Conway at tackle.

People tend to forget that the offense is also replacing AET & Estime and the TEs. The replacements may eventually be OK (and Pierce an upgrade), but the replacements (Butler, Pierce, N. Johnson) are still relatively new to this offense.
Any newer than anyone that played last year?

That was about it...heard he had talent but most thought he would be just an average receiver.[/QU]

With closed August practices, there weren't many observations to judge how AET was doing. Some assumptions were made based on his status as a part-time starter at Maryland -- though he had put up a 100 yd game against SU as a soph. And when the games began, he was our best receiver.

Butler is converting from playing QB. N. Johnson is trying to step in as a true frosh. Maybe we should wait to see how that goes.

Well, it is not only newer to Babers (Nykeim Johnson, for example -- no Spring practice), but newer to the college level, and not much of a college resume. Our returning veteran receivers last season (Phillips, Estime, Ishmael) had contributed in spread offenses in college and had worked with Babers as starters in the Spring. Butler is converting from playing QB in high school, and missed half of last season with injuries.
