Can’t argue with this, I didn’t know the end of the story with the other kid getting killed. And FYI, charges can be re-filed against this kid, the charges were dismissed without prejudice

I've worked with plenty of teenagers who have done similar or worse and without hesitation I'd say that some of them would be a great positive impact on my football team's culture now that they are on the other side of their mistake. I am willing to trust Fran and Co if their due diligence tells them that a kid deserves a second chance.

I’m not going to speak to his upbringing because I don’t know. But I will speak to guys upbringing that I knew. Some went to Corcoran and some went to Fowler. These kids upbringing, culture and environment often times made it 10X harder to make it. I’m talking drugs in the house, guns, gangs, no father or mother OR no parents at all.

With that upbringing, how are you supposed to know how to make the right decisions.

Everyone deserves a second chance. I’m a different person at 38 than 17/18. Furthermore, isn’t that was college sports is partly for? To grow and be part of something bigger than yourself?

I’ll ask you this. Where is this kid better off. In the situation he’s in? Or far away from the situation?

Maybe I’m off here but didn’t you not want Alton Robinson here either? He seems to have learned and grown.

Life isn’t black and white. It’s mostly gray.

It’s not always cut and dry here. Maybe they were in the drive thru and the passenger decided to shoot. Who knows, I don’t pretend to understand what inner city kids go through and the different social circles and pressure they face. Circumstances matter, very different then the non diverse area I grew up in.

Robinson was the poster child for deserving a second chance. His "situation" was about as benign as possible, despite what he was charged with [charges that were later withdrawn by the girl's family]. And yes, bnoro was against bringing him in -- because he always draws a black and white line in the sand, without factoring in context.

I agree. The article mentions that he was driving erratically to pull up and block the other vehicle and he told one of the mothers that he knew the other guy was going to shoot. I try to be empathetic that many of these guys grew up in life circumstances far differerent than my own and I did some stupid stuff as a teenager. But it feels like participating in a drive by shooting, even though nobody was hit, is a reasonable standard to say he needs to improve his decision making in a significant way and maybe we need to pass on this recruit. We don't need to rubber stamp everything Fran does.

But it wasn't a "shooting." Nobody got shot.

What the kid did was dumb as hell. He probably deserved to get prosecuted. Maybe it was a giant wake-up call.

Or maybe that other kid, who died from gun violence two weeks after this incident was the real perpetrator of the situation.

But let's not pretend that somebody got shot or killed. Something occurred that showed really, really bad judgement, and luckily nobody was hurt. If somebody HAD been hurt, then this kid would and should be in jail.

If Calicut is a thug, then I assume that will come out and Fran will have to decide accordingly. But it sounds like he is just a dumb kid who came within an eyelash of making a life-defining mistake, that luckily didn't come to pass. It sounds like he was jolted by the whole ordeal, and has actively tried to turn things around. Maybe it was an inflection point in his life, and what he does from that point forward is more important than a moment that almost was.

Have you worked hands on with kids who have done things like this kid allegedly has done? I'm asking because you're coming across as very out of touch and that surprises me based on my perception of your posting history and how often we agree on certain topics.

I've represented kids that have shot at houses and a year later they are employed, in school everyday, church leaders, leaders amongst their peers, active in the community, actively speaking out to peers in similar situations, etc etc. Picking up guns is all some kids know and while it's always unacceptable it is almost never as black and white as you're making it.

I feel Fran will make the right call. We have had other players come on campus and after Fran had a chance to sit down with the kid he moved on. Fran wants to win but not at the expense of culture. If we do move forward I do think it would be in the kids best interest to go to a program out of TX and give him a start away from any potential negative influences. Also any revenue share would be tied to conduct.

Have we heard about any legal trouble under Fran's watch in his 2+ years at Syracuse with any of his players? I don't believe so. I trust Fran to make the call on this whether to bring him in or not. If we are having problems with players and legal trouble once they are at Syracuse that's an entirely different story.

I don’t think people realize how akin some of these low income, drug/gang infested neighborhoods are to prison mentality. You do what you have to do to survive daily and being a loner just makes you a target. You just hope surviving doesn’t rack you with long term consequences that put you behind bars for years.

And adults pay kids to commit crimes like this! Prey on financial desperation and misconceptions of the justice system. It is all really sad stuff.

Again, not excusing using guns, but if a second chance is earned then it is deserved.
