Class of 2026 DB Jaxson Gates (CA) Flipped to BYU

Seems odd that he was just posting pics of his visit a few days ago. One would assume something happened behind the scenes here.

Will always be tough to bring in Cali kids. Best of luck Mr. Gates
Especially an elite California prospect that is wanted by many in the West. These situations are very fluid. It’s why despite us being at 20+ recruits for 2026, the recruiting is still in full swing. A commitment is really just a temporary hold of a roster spot until they sign and even signing has back out loopholes for both sides. These kids are developing, growing up, and changing. It’s something our staff seems to recognize as well and it’s important for both sides to constantly reevaluate until pen hits paper if the fit is still the best for both sides. As long as both sides maintain a strong relationship, a time further down the road in the recruiting cycle or portal window where the fit on both sides makes sense again, we can make it a done deal rather quickly.

Surprised he would switch to BYU. Maybe ucla or usc came in with an offer. His high school is located less than an hour from LA

If you had to pick between Gates or Geter, I think they both are very solid CBs - but the recruiting area that Geter is in is more important to the long term success for SU IMO.

He says, coping with this loss and wishing they were both coming

and a kid is less likely to transfer in a year when he lives close by. Gates always struck me as the most likely to flip just given the geography. But that's not based on any insight, just pure location.

right -- we will always take kids out of the traditional areas but as a fan we definitely will be more weary of distant locations

I really liked this kid as a prospect. Outstanding offer list and took OV’s to extremely good schools. I thought we could hold on, but this is why i prefer not to recruit kids from California, Texas, or really anywhere out west. They’re typically the most likely to decommit or transfer if developed. I wouldn’t waste the resources out that way.

Also, better get ready for hot chocolate parties, and not experiencing college promiscuity to the fullest. I thought Utah would be the one to worry about.

Just like it'll always be hard to get those elite NY kids to go out west.

Yeah, and he better pack a lot of socks because of all the uh...
the uhhh...
cold weather!

(Phew!! I was able to keep it clean! Unlike all those poor socks... )

Recruiting is a fickle business. Not the first and I’m betting it won’t be our last. It’s the nature of the beast at this point. If you have a lot players that other teams want, you are going to occasionally lose some. We also will probably end up flipping some ourselves. It’s a long time until signing day. Fran hasn’t given me any reason not to believe in his recruiting abilities.

Best of luck to Gates

A few things I'm learning more and more each day,
Commited doesn't mean commited anymore,
Small celebration for signing top players for a year,
Even if they sign with SU top players are constantly pressured and more likely to
be transfer candidates,
In the end no matter what Fran Brown will improve our roster over time
Will it be enough to make the college playoffs, no one really knows and only time will tell

If committed meant what some folks think it should mean, we’d all be living in a “Paradise by the Dashboard Light”

Always had a feeling this one was going to be a tough one to hold onto. Honestly since the day he committed. Oh well. I trust Fran big time when it comes to recruiting
