Demetres Samuel Jr

Really excited to watch him. Just find it hard to believe he’s going to see reps at wr in meaningful games this year. That room seems quite deep and the need at CB is so high.
Wish we had reporters that could ask this question.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but we landed Samuels early, then he decommitted and committed to 2 other schools, but then came back to Fran late last fall and indicated that he wanted to come here despite decommitting. And then he enrolled early.

Very interesting series of events, and we usually don't have things work out favorably in these kind of situations -- but looks like it did this time.

I don’t remember a time ever winning a scenario like that. Just another thing to show why Fran is so special. And we usually lose these scenarios with lower valued players too. This kid has a chance to be really special. Let’s hope we can hold onto him beyond this year.

He was a 10.52 100m guy... as a Sophomore. He's young age wise but good luck to anyone trying to catch him. He has elite athleticism and also seems to be a super bright kid. I look forward to the 2 seasons he gives us prior to being a 1st round pick after winning the Heisman next year...

tell me more? I thought it was 2 years in college and he could declare as a junior?

It used to be 3 years out of high school. So the only sophomores were those who redshirted. Michael Vick was the first one I remember who did that.

But I don't know if that still applies?

I'm honestly not sure either. I thought 1 year for hoops and 2 for football but I've been wrong before

With two freshman wideouts injured, Samuels' chances of playing wide receiver got better this week.

I can't believe they want to do it much...
Maybe only after three and outs on defense so he isn't getting tired out. If the other team gets a long drive where he's covering for ten or more plays, he could tire out by the end playing both ways. Especially if he's covering the other teams best receiver, him being sharp is essential.

I do think the WR room is in good shape still. JRS, Cook, Gill, Hornsby, and E Ross all have the tools to succeed as the top five this year.

Sure... But they put three of them out there at once a lot of the time. Especially with Boobie getting injured, who was going to be in the two deep, it makes sense that some reps will go to Samuels that otherwise go to a healthy full time receiver instead of a part time two way CB.

Samuel’s will get snaps on offense via gadget and plays designed for him I think this offense will be very dangerous with all the weapons it has . I wonder if we get another 2 way players in a year or 2 👀

Not to get too far ahead of ourselves but, if Samuel were to be drafted after 3 years of CFB, he’d likely become the 2nd youngest player ever drafted into the NFL. Amobi Okoye is the youngest ever at 19 years/10 months in 2007. Samuel will turn 20 in April 2028, a few weeks prior to the draft.

He can play the fourth year in NF$EC. The league where 4th year guys make more than many NFL rookies.
Three years from Samuels would be huge for SU. Four would be something really special.

I think with some injuries to WRs in camp he'll have a better shot at showing what he can do. I think some games we'll see him on O for 5-10 snaps, maybe more in others, maybe zero in some. I think Fran & Co., have a really good feel for the game and a good understanding of their players so whatever is going to help them win, they'll do

The national attention if this kid gets a touchdown on both sides of the ball in the same game though... whew i'm already day dreamin'

You can also pick your spots to use him. For example, in a 2-minute drill at the end of the second half. Second down on the second series of an offensive drive... where you still have 3rd down, a punt, and a TV Timeout looming. It is hard for someone 35+ years beyond his age to appreciate his conditioning though. Maybe he could play both ways most games and not be too tired.

Fran has mentioned their goal is to exhaust him in practice and yet he's keeping up - it's incredibly impressive
