Departures

Apathy is the worst thing that can hit a fan base and Cuse fans are beyond apathetic after this, they are irate, this will kill any NIL donation drives or asks, a double-edged sword. Once again, lost opportunity and momentum after a 10-3 season.
Yeah the $25 people are giving will really have an effect. How will Fran brown cope with the loss.

Guys Luke isn’t it either. We struck out on him and struck out on the portal last year. We will get a better backup for Steve in the portal. It’s a priority along with the other obvious needs.
But do we have the money to essentially rebuild the roster in the trenches again?

It'll be fascinating to see what QB will come here when Fran has been slobbering all over Steve since the day he got hurt. This portal addition KNOWS there will be no competition for #1, and he knows he won't get a shot to play outside of catastrophic injury.

Maybe a good FCS QB who's finished his undergraduate degree wants a Masters from an SU program and will come?

A redshirt freshman who didn't play at a P4 this season?

Seems like it'll be a challenging needle to thread.

Yep. And if "that guy" exists, we will be about the 50th best financial offer out there. Especially considering our other glaring needs. Every team wants a Steve Young to back up their Joe Montana. Angeli was a stroke of luck for us, probably because had the existing relationships in place to make Syracuse a good offer. Not sure we will find that again. And I am definitely not sure this staff can evaluate quarterbacks.

I honestly don't know the NIL market enough to understand what's possible. Is there a market for "good FCS QBs who come to P4 schools as a QB2 or QB3"? What's the money for that? I have no clue.

And without transparency in NIL amounts we may never actually have "markets" for certain levels of player. At least in the NFL, given the cap and transparency about salaries, we all know what a back up QB costs. Yet another reason why college sports is (a) a mess, and (b) losing me more and more every day.

TBH I don't l know either. And the transparency will never exist. It's a cultural norm at some schools to line players pockets. I doubt that any NFL fans are hooking players up with cars or homes, but college boosters, totally different animal. My point is that if there ARE such good QBs out there who would go be a QB2 or 3 for a year, then the Big Boys in the SEC and B1G know who they are, where they are, and have the resources to get them, and Fran doesn't even get his call answered. I agree with you- it's a mess, and I really have a hard time caring. At all.

I think the biggest takeaway I have from the portal and NIL is that it's not really a commodity market. What's available depends so so much on who is moving and why they're moving.

Sure, maybe there's a good FCS that wants a masters. Or maybe he wants to transfer near his GF. Maybe there's a QB at another team upset with play calling who thinks he can beat out Angeli here. Endless scenarios and we probably won't anticipate precisely what they are but we need to seize the opportunities that arise.

*Whatever* we do I just don't want it to be a bet on a project. We have Angeli, the [reasonably] high ceiling is covered. We just need someone we can count on even if their ceiling is so-so. Although even better if they already have a high ceiling lol.

Well hopefully they get someone who can actually evaluate QB talent because I’m not sure I trust Nixon, Fran or nunz

I believe so. DL is a priority. I think we have good young talent on the OL. It’s poorly coached. And will be rectified.
Don't think Cuse will have the money but would love to get Alex Atkins or Trautwein. I'm sure they will be in high demand.

He transferred out of major level when told he was #3 in a 2-man QB competition.
He transferred out of major level...?

Last 2 years ND has played Stanford, Gtech, Miami, NC St, BC and Pitt.
As have the CUSE.
Cuse has also played Clemson and Tenn.
Aren't the levels of competition pretty similar?

I’m hoping the entire QB room hits the portal. Collins stinks, Filarfi stinks, Carney stinks. We act as if Angeli is some kind of savior waiting in the wings. Dude was third string at ND! Now we get the hobbled version. Oh my aching head.
Angeli was second string at Notre Dame for several years and he has played 4 games for us. He is not “waiting in the wings”.

He happened to be the leading passer in the nation until his ACL.

Yeah, I know September feels like a while ago... But we've seen Angeli play both here (and in the National semifinal last year, etc.)... Let's not go revisionist history. We have a starting QB. We need to address the rest of that room to have capable depth.
