Depth Chart observation

It's greate news to see this. Nothing was as scary as seeing the depth chart after marrone's purge. Walkons filled out the 2 deep

I know that this isn't the official depth chart, but this is from an article published online at Syracuse.com:

http://www.syracuse.com/orangefootb...ball_depth_chart_projection.html#incart_river

Not too many surprises. But the thing that stood out to me was how many players we'd have as returning starters next year -- on BOTH sides of the ball.

I think this year is going to be a long year. My hope is that Shafer can weather the storm because next year is the year it takes off.

A couple of things that stand out to me; providing this IS the depth chart:

True Freshman Amir Ealey won the battle btw Shep and Pickard at DEnd backing up Thompson

True Freshman Chris Frederick (6’1 – 196) won the battle as the back up strong safety. Nice to have a big SS.

rJR Corey Whitfield hasn’t cracked the 2 deep at corner. The two rFR have the edge. I’m actually happy about this because Dowels and Hudson we’re recruited cornerbacks. Dowels was the Sun-Sentinel’s Defensive Player of the Year (small schools – 5A-4A-3A-2A). Not to shabby. What’s lost on that award is the fact that 5 star cornerback recruit, Tavarus McFadden, played opposite Dowels so teams went after Dowels. He won the POY award and had 9 picks. Hoping he’s Kevin Abrams redux.

Ture Freshman Troy Henderson, (5’11 – 225), is backing up Zaire at the MIKE. I thought this would happen.

There’s no surprises on the offensive depth chart. It’ll be interesting to see if anyone emerges that’s not listed.

Disagree. I think we're going to surprise this year.

I believe that the offense is going to be much better than last year, that we're going to get off to a fast start, and that Hunt is going to be better than most expect. 6 wins or bust.

I think we start fast, grind through the tough middle third, and finish strong and go to a good middle-upper non non playoff) bowl game. Next year we will challenge for conference honors with most of the same guys being a year older/wiser. Next off season we (the board) will all be worried about OL and QB because everything else will already be in place. We are finally getting there and if a couple guys play above their years this season we will be a royal pain in the neck for most everyone we play on our way to 6-9 wins.

My biggest worry is the youth and then the lack of depth at certain spots. I've seen what happens to teams who's 2 deep it littered with fr, rfr and sophs.

It's a concern for sure but I'd counter with the fact that our Frosh are now hitting the ground physically at a point that was taking prior recruiting classes 2 years of S & C to get to. Our lineman, for example aren't showing up at 260 lbs nor are our LB's 195 lb's.

.....because next year is the year it takes off.

Year 12 (and coach #3) of the 3 year rebuild. I am so thoroughly sick n tired of this mentality.
(not a bash at you P.O., just a general observation)

Surprised to read your post.

I was thinking that we might surprise this year.

I am concerned with depth and the DL - if we can't play at the point of attack, it will be a difficult year.

I think those black helmet protectors, or concussion preventers are a pretty good idea in this day and age, but Lord everytime I see a picture of them, this image pops into my mind,

I don't think anyone's won anything yet. There's still 3 weeks until Rhode Island.

I’m sick of it to, but it’s the reality. Shafer is entering his 3rd season and working hard to replenish the roster and upgrade the talent. Which he’s done in my opinion. A lot of our kids are development kids so it takes a few years.

Offensively we’ve got veterans. Defensively not so much. But as a whole returning all these kids next year and expectations should be high.

Just look at that projected two deep:

OFFENSE:

Will return 17 of 22 kids

7 kids listed as sophomore or less.

rJR – 9
JR – 1
rSO – 3
SO – 3
rFR – 1
FR – 0

DEFENSE:

Will return 18 of 22

14 kids listed as sophomore or less.

rJR – 3
JR – 1
rSO – 1
SO – 4
rFR – 5
FR – 4

Gotta love it when we're already looking to the next year before this year even starts. Here's hoping hoops will keep us focused on this year... at least until DC's knees give out.

Unless we completely blow this year i think that Coyle gives shafer a two year extension

Who invited the bad news bear?

There's pessimists, there's Igor, and then there's you.

just paraphrasing the general vibe that I'm reading here. not expecting much this year -and I'm sure not alone in that sentiment. Hopeful, yes, but not delusional.

Being 100% negative doesn't make you an enlightened poster.

Being optimistic does not make one "delusional."

The next positive thing you have to say about the program will be the first. I'm sure I'm not alone in that observation.

Replenish talent? Madrone left us with a good mediocre team

It's not the real depth chart, it's what Bailey thinks the depth chart should be for the 2 deep based on his observations.

...

Have to take some of that chart with a grain of salt. Battles aren't won in the first week. Chris Frederick is listed on Syracuse Athletics as 5 ft 11 in and 173. Red shirt candidate?
