Devo’s Comments

The excuses for Year 3 are already being built in.

As I've stated previously you can't do a rebuild in Year 3 with no prior success to hang you hat.

By comparison Fran can survive a 5-7 year next year to build towards Year 3 after his year 1 success.
We know the following are gone next year:

Lampkin
Jyare
Taylor
McLeod
Carlos

Could argue 50/50 for these guys to go pro/transfer:

JJ
Donnie
Bell

Safe bets to be back:

Petar
Choppa
Cuffe

TBD:

Chance

Freshman:

Kiyan
Sadiq
Fennell
Womack

I think safely we can say we have 7 guys on the roster for next year - Cuffe would be the only upperclassman. JJ or Bell coming back would add to that. We will have plenty of room for transfers - which should be upper classmen.

Right now we look very perimeter heavy - Choppa, Cuffe, Kiyan, Womack, Fennell. The only “bigs” I see are Sadiq and Petar. Donnie coming back would be huge but I don’t see it. Reds mission is clear - a pure PG and some bigs - hopefully all veterans. If you get proven college PG it bring out the most potential of the young guys. I think a defensive/rebounding/rim protector at the 5 would be ideal over an offensive minded one.

If Red hits at the 1 and 5 in the Portal the path is there for a good team

Could Melos cash land a better class than last year? Getting his son whoever the #1 PG in the portal is would be great lol

I think given how young the team is going to be it will be making the tourney but if Sadiq plays year 2 (which I don’t think will happen) there will be some real expectations to win

What are “real expectations to win”? That’s really fuzzy. Give something more concrete than “real expectations of winning”. My opinion if we keep Red - anything less than a top 4 seed in the NCAA tourney isn’t winning enough. It’s going to require that good of a year to wash off the stink of this year and repair Red’s brand. We won’t fire him if he scrapes out a #10 seed - but the chance that would be anything other than a dead cat bounce which just delays the inevitable and pointlessly wastes another year or two is low.

And I don’t care what the roster looks like - top 4 seed or keeping him around will prove out to be the wrong decision. Period.

Red said today to be patient and JB made it look easy and everyone Wants success too fast.

If I knew I was a terrible coach with no chance of winning, I’d be saying fans need to be patient too. I’d always be selling the idea that success is right around the corner provided people give me a chance. So I fully understand why he’s saying that - and it’s why I’d fire him today after those comments. He’s not going to win. Ever.
Yeah, not many people punt on a 3mil a year job, doing what they love… when no one else is offering the same job for more money.

Unfortunately this seems to be the case. A home win against a woeful Georgia Tech crew has some posters forgetting that the program has been GRobbed. Hopefully for the kids' sake, BC doesn't give them a strong dose of reailty in a few hours.

I don’t think JJ or Bell are back next season.

Situational awareness is the problem here. If Syracuse was looking like a wrong side of the bubble, NIT team - he can say what he said. When you’re looking like a team that is going to struggle to win 10 ’n games - you cannot. He needed to come out and say something more like he knows this is completely unacceptable but fully expects to be in the NCAA tournament next year and a consistent tournament team following that.

“Gimmee more time, you don’t understand how hard this is!” doesn’t cut it when you’re looking at the worst year in Syracuse basketball in 60 years. It’s hard because he’s not a good coach who is over his head - if he had the skills he needed, this would be a lot less hard for him.

Thats what someone says when they’re not getting results. This is a results driven profession.

Given the state of the program, requesting patience from the fans will do nothing but work up the fanbase, and substantially why the program finds itself where it is, with an uninspired continuity hire. Would not recommend Red take that angle.

Having a young team Year 3 would be a mistake by Red, and likely the nail in the coffin if that team doesn't perform. If they don't, and Red is still around, that's solely on Wildhack.

Bell probably transfers, but zero idea where JJ is going. He might be able to play in a lower lever league in France.
He's in line for a huge bag as a senior and is one of the better players at his position in CBB. He'd be insane to go pro a year early.
