Was he ever considered? Guy is doing one hell of a job and when you look at our recruiting area over the last ten years it is NY followed by Florida. He might have been the ticket

FWIW, Scout ranks our recruiting class higher than theirs this year. But I agree that he's got a huge pipeline to Florida.

I have a call into my Dad who would know but i dont think we went after him. On the surface he seems to have a good grip on his program and the respect of this players

I think your approach to the question is wrong. I think the question you meant to ask was; would Charlie Strong have ever considered the SU job before we hired DM?

Who knows maybe not but i will find out. I was looking at the UL web site and if looks could make a program take a look at the assistant coaches. Anyway guy sure can coach and recruit.

Why not? Louisville was pretty bad when he got there

A lot of the kids he has playing couldn't have gotten in here.

And Florida is not in second, it's about equal with PA and NJ.

Louisville has money for assistants and facilities and a more recent history of success making a turn around much easier.

Really i think that any kid that gets into LV could get into SU. Also take a look at our recruits.

he's a fundamentally different hire than dm. dm sold su on wanting to be HERE. the vast majority of hires would have used our position as a stepping stone and everyone has strong tabbed as an sec hire if he succeeds as a hc in the big east. he'll be outta lville in a year. personally, i wouldn't have minded the stepping stone guy because his success would be tied to ours...but i at least get the logic in trying to find a lifer.

Christ, why not just start the "Did we try to hire Urban Meyer?" thread now so we can play this through to it's ludicrous conclusion quickly.

I see that SU just hired another "name brand" highly experienced coach for an "olympic sport" that no one gives a crap about (volleyball"). Gross seems fine with paying what I assume are above average salaries to the coaches of non-revenue sports, yet he went cheap twice with football. Volleyball, cross country, tennis, hockey, softball and field hockey have all had more expensive staffs brought in despite being revenue drains. Meanwhile football struggles to put together a solid staff. I like a lot of what Gross has done yet some of his moves leave less to be desired.

And he is not consistent. I was at an event this summer where he went out of his way to praise the tennis team and the fact that SU was winning with Americans and not loading up on kids from outside the US (I assume that is a tennis recruiting issue). Meanwhile SU's field hockey team has won with overage foreigners and its men's soccer team is trying to do the same thing. And while firing a ton of people, the women's basketball team underachieves, recruits kids who cannot get in and nothing is done despite it being a program that could attract some local interest.

Scooch are you saying that Charlie Strong was out of our league? Come on be real he could have been a legit target for us.

What in Charlie Strong's bio would have made him a legit target for us? His 25 years of experience coaching in the south? His lack of ties to any of our natural recruiting grounds?

I'm not saying we had to bring in an SU guy, but we went down the road of having someone completely disassociated with the northeast/midatlantic before, and it was a disaster.

Mostly your post just smacks of silliness. Look, Marrone may or may not end up doing a good job at SU, but just throwing out random coaches who were hired around the same year as "alternatives" that we could have had is the height of said silliness.

Why aren't you posting threads about every other coach we could have hired for the 2009 season? Could we have legitimately targeted:

Chip Kelly?
Steve Sarkasian?
Gene Chizik?
Dan Mullen?
Paul Rhoades?
Danny Hope?
Ron English?
Dave Clawson?
Gary Andersen?
Bill Snyder?
Rich Ellersen?

Wheeeee, this is fun!

I was asking a question because Charlie is in the Big East has beaten us each time he plays us is known as a tough no BS coach like Doug and was on TV last night so he was top of mind. As to your points i know that the administration made an effort to provide interviews to black coaches. I also know that Florida is a very important recruiting area for us actually other than NY it might be our second most fertile area. Third Charlie has good purchase in the coaching community and would have had the ability to hire strong coaches with east recruiting ties. Fourth i believe he was in our price range.

The guys we considered in no particular order were Chip Kelly, Randy Edsall, Al Golden, Skip Holtz, and Doug Marrone. And there was an Addazio thing going on with some former players.

You can add Gill to the list. The guy i wanted was Golden wish we would have stepped up with the money.

His clock management skills were laughable last night. Hen needs a quick lesson on why you use your timeouts when on defense.

IIRC, the job was Chip Kelly's if he wanted it. We basically forced Oregon's hand. Belloti retired to be AD and Kelly was promoted to HC before we could fly him out to be interviewed.

My recollection was that Holtz was our first choice but spurned us, and Edsall was interviewed but never offered the job. Others here may have insiders knowledge of what was discussed behind closed doors, but I don't recall Kelly's name being actively discussed as the front-runner.

The timing of the hires doesn't support your version: Marrone was appointed HC @ SU on Dec 11, 2008, while Belotti became AD and Kelly promoted to HC at Oregon 4 months later (March 2009).

On a separate note, for folks who prefer Strong over Marrone - Louisville basically lost the game on 3 turnovers last night (what happens when you play a Fr. QB), and an untimely running into the punter penalty. You have to give Strong credit going for broke when down 21 (fake punt and onsides kick).

He wasn't a candidate because Oregon "promoted" him to HC the day before he was set to fly out for an interview. It was understood that unless he tanked in his interview, he would be offered the job but it never got to that far.

It may have been interim or some agreement that Belloti would retire after the season to make way for Kelly. Donnie Webb wrote about it in the PS.
