Dino and the media

Presently I'm all in on Dino because I continue to believe he is the right man for the job. On balance, I think the season has been as I expected in terms of the record. I like the trend recruiting is on, and those redshirt freshman surely look the part. I would expect that many of them become important contributors next year, and some even grow into stars. I like how competitive we we're in almost every game, and I believe that a lack of depth sealed our fate with respect to earning a bowl bid.

That said, at the end of next year I do expect a bowl, I do expect to beat another top ranked team, and I do expect a big road win - or two. I also expect the coaches to turn over every stone to find juco's and graduate transfers, and to add a couple of late 2018 graduates to the mix to make these expectations a reality.

At this time next year, my gut tells me we are all going to be very glad we have Dino. Happy Thanksgiving.

I'm not one of the guys who thinks Dino can do no wrong, but his system has already been proven on the P5 level at Baylor
Dino is the man for the job until he is not. Exactly how many failed seasons that would be is not up to us, but lets face facts here, no bowl in season 3, 4, whatever, at some point you have to say it is not working. I am not saying he should not still be the man today, but if he can not turn this around soon, I think he and we know what will happen. I hope to gosh he does get there and soon, I am rooting for that to happen.
I still have my doubts about his system working at the upper P5 level, we shall see.

That's just it. Some people want to extend him. If we don't get to 6 next year, then what? That's Gerg level bad.

You keep saying this. But Gerg didn’t sniff a win vs #2, playoff contender in 4 years.

Really bad comp

I don't see the comment as a big deal (although I have no clue what he is talking about when he is bringing up custodians and administrators.) Only thing that makes sense (and if it is this he did a poor job expressing it) is those people (custodians and administrators) got so hyped after SU beat Clemson they read the press clippings and pumped up/talked up the players on a daily basis when they saw the players in the building and the players lost focus and Dino couldn't stop the custodians and administrators from talking to the kids walking around the building and giving them big heads. IF (and just guessing here) that is what he is talking about that is a really poor excuse by Dino for not winning a game since Clemson.

His comment wasn't as bad as what Schafer said or Ken Shaw said back in the day, not even close to that level. So I don't think its a huge deal. But Dino needs to worry about the team and stop pointing fingers at custodians, administrators, fans, or whoever he is talking about or truly feels this way about.

Custodians? Administrators? I'm all in on Babers, but isn't it his job to keep the players attitudes in check? He said it was a poor choice of words, so I'm ready to move on. If we don't get to a bowl next year, the heat will really be on.

Yet their wider readership might well be turned off by that sort of fawning coverage. Remember that they're not writing only for the hard-core junkies -- and I include myself in that category -- but for a wider readership with varying levels of interest.

Again, it's not 1956.
I just want to have insight into the team, I don't need the clowns there interpreting things for me and putting their slant to it.

Just report the facts then with no spin. I don't need some 20-something kid who is trying to make a name for himself giving me his opinion.

Greg Robinson took a 6-6 bowl team and won 10 games in the next four years.

Dino took a 3-9 team and has won 8 games in two years against the toughest competition in the country in the toughest division in College Football.

There is no comparison between the two.

Fixed

Yes I realize we play in a beast of a division. Do you realize it's not going anywhere? I posted another response earlier discussing SOS, we have the 33rd most difficult schedule in the country, but 7 other ACC schools have tougher schedules, 6 of them are going bowling even with the schedules. The ACC isn't going anywhere, so we need to be able to compete at that level or Adios unless you never want to go to a bowl game again. I think Dino gets it done next year but people need to get out of this honeymoon phase because we beat Clemson with a hurt/backup QB and came close in a couple of games. Next year, people need to be honest with what's going on if it's not happening.

You realize we lost 3 games with a hurt QB then a backup - kinda like Clemson but 3x over.

The Post standard is in now way different than the Springfield Union. They are both Newhouse papers. The Union manages without Syracuse University. never pick a fight with a guy that buys his ink in 1,000,000 vats of ink. It's business 101. Syracuse University and little Dino Babers can't win that fight.
This is hilarious,

Considering the fact that the newspaper in Syracuse went from being the Post-Standard AND the Herald Journal being 2 papers quite a while ago. These were 7 days a week and 2 papers a day. PS was the morning paper and the HJ was the evening.

Down to just the Post Standard 7 days a week.

Now being just 3 days a week, clearly not as much "ink" as they used to buy. So you need to adjust your ink number down a bit.

The paper and the website don't have anywhere near the pull they used to and I am not so sure that even way back when that they had much pull.

There are way too many places to get the news you want/need. The PS could collapse tomorrow and I don't think anyone would even notice. I live in Syracuse and I don't buy the paper any longer and rarely go to the site because the coverage of everything is terrible. Half the articles are recycled from the AP wire and the other half are a waste of time.

When the "House of The Week" makes the main page, you have problems.

The paper is printed 7 days a week. Home delivery is only 3 days a week. Ask Jb if the paper can hurt his program.

I get the sense that he thinks the Syracuse fan base is dumb and can be manipulated. I don't think he realizes that many fans tasted major success 20 years ago with Pasqualoni and a high flying offense that actually won.

His comments are jarring to me a bit. That along with his surprise that the ACC is actually adjusting to his offensive philosophy. I lived through Rick Pitino in Boston when he was shocked his system didn't work in the NBA.

I'm really hoping he's just having a bad day. I certainly have them.

Donnie McPherson isn't walking through that door
Marvin Graves isn't waking through that door
Donovan McNabb isn't walking through that door

I'm not a fan of Waters jumping in there based on nothing more than another media member's guess in parentheses from a tweet.

The coach he covers should keep him more than busy.

That coach has been at war with the local media for 40 years.

I will do you one better, I will ask JB how much longer he thinks a printed paper will be around.

There are reasons they went from 2 papers to 1, reasons why they cut delivery from 7 days a week to 3 and reasons why they cut staff and went from good qualified reporters to clowns.

I'm sure you are an expert on the qualifications of reporters. the newspaper has had a rough time. But they have been far more successful than the Syracuse football program over the last 17 years. I dare say, the Post Standard has been better than 4-8 the last two years.

I would disagree wholeheartedly. Why would I need to be an expert on the qualifications of reporters.

Not an expert and no need to be one either, I am a consumer of media and I can discern good work from bad and what they put out is bad.

Question for you. What were Mink's, Cohen's, Bailey's and Carlson's qualifications before being hired by the PS?

No idea. I didn't claim they did good work or bad. You did. I do know they have a beat where the coach limits their ability to cover the team. I don't think that is very wise because you want the community to buy in to what you are doing. The second best way is to go through the media and try to build excitement. The best way is to win but so far this staff hasn't been very successful at that. Haven't been successful at the second way either. Might be why the staff is always whining about fan support.

I don't want to get mixed up in this but the 8 games in two years (and hopefully it ends up being 9) is made to look better by using the #8. It comes out to one more win in each of two seasons.

Oh, so them being bad at their jobs is Dino's fault.

I don't claim they are bad, they prove it through their work.

Are you talking about the football staff and their 8 15 record? The football writers have been better than the football team for quite a long time. Including right now.

I wasn't aware that there was a writer's competition where they get a record to be compared to each other and a football coach.

If there was, all 4 of those clowns I mentioned earlier would have exactly zero point zero wins.

Dino is a professional, Dino is successful, they are not. That is where the comparison starts and ends.
