Dino Babers didn’t sink Syracuse football; free agency did (Guest Opinion by Robyn E. Jobity)

Robyn E. Jobity, of Buffalo, is the mother of Syracuse University defensive lineman Kevin Jobity Jr., a sophomore.

most of that is legit and I agree with the new sad state of “college” football (They are going to have to come up with a new name). But losing those D guys didn't sink the season, rather the anemic O post injuries, coaching etc. did.

People liked DB and it’s great he has support from former players and their families. It means he had an impact. But they’re responding from an emotional state about his performance. Emotional responses are where bad decisions come from and how businesses fail.

First and foremost - love Kevin Jobity and his upside, and I hope to see him continue to progress because I believe he can be a force at DE for us. And I do agree with his mother in general on the negative impact an unregulated NIL/portal environment can have on a program like Syracuse. I share those concerns long-term.

However, in regards to Dino and his tenure, the portal/NIL is a red herring. Portal temptations had virtually nothing to do with our QB, WR and OL depth charts as they currently stand. We lost Lamson because he wasn't given an opportunity to compete for a starting job, and that's it. We haven't lost a single 2 deep member at those 3 position groups of consequence other than him. And the depth on the offensive side of the ball by far was the overriding issue with Dino's tenure, not just this year but in the 3-4 years preceding this year. The OL and WR recruiting woes post 2019 largely are in my opinion the main reason that Tommy DeVito was not successful here, and we've consistently had no legitimate option 2 at QB beyond the starter during those years. We've cobbled together a front line starting OL group the past 3-4 years that on a good day is Average for a P5 team, with little if any competent backups behind them even though we're regularly bringing in JUCO's/Portal kids exactly for that purpose. And don't get me started with the WR group - 1 legitimate P5 star caliber player (OG) in years. All of this has really nothing to do with the portal and it certainly had nothing to do with it in 2019-2020.

I appreciate that the team and the parents of players like Dino - he's a likable guy. But he's also responsible for the success of the program in his role, like a CEO of a business is. And throughout this Op-Ed I don't see one reference to things that were completely in his control that he did not perform to the level he should have on. Even commenting on injuries which didn't go his way. Well - where was the depth on offense behind those injuries that had NOTHING do do with the portal? Just one example.

And I'm sorry - Dino referencing NIL in the context he did was an excuse. Period.

And when Dino Babers references it in an interview, it’s not an excuse.

It basically was.

And it ignores the fact that Syracuse participates in signing players from the portal too.

And I think most sane observers would say that the portal has been pretty solidly net-positive for Syracuse.

Only a handful (like, 2) guys who left have been impactful at their next stop.

Meanwhile, we've brought in a bunch of former 4* guys that we all woulda been exceedingly happy in our pants, had we signed them directly from HS.
Our starting QB1 for the past nearly 3 seasons was a portal transfer.
As was his backup.

So - kinda hard to take Dino's whining about the portal seriously.
He and we woulda been MUCH worse off, if it didn't exist.

Great article with a very balanced perspective, well done! While I believe game management sunk Coach Babers as 7-8 wins would have been a success the overall article is spot on!

Did Duce Chestnut get $250K of NIL to go to LSU? KROIKY

(Read in twitter comments)

I really like Dino as a person and I think he has been a fantastic mentor to the players in preparing them for life. Unfortunately, NIL and the transfer portal had nothing to do with questionable clock and game management, an absurd number of penalties, and a strength and conditioning program that never seemed to overcome a plague of injuries.

Well written but I disagree. His way of coaching, team management and on field performance disengaged a fanbase that has a lot to offer NIL wise. Whether you guys believe that or not, is not the point. He pissed off a lot of Alum too.

I don’t think he was up to the job at Syracuse.

This.

We lost some good defensive players to portal.

The biggest O loss happened a couple years ago (Jordan) where we had Tucker and replaced him with current starter Allen.

We brought on portal players too.

Our Offense, which is our issue, is mostly portal players. Which means we whiffed on high school recruits on Offense.

We have three QB that portaled in from SEC schools. Villari portaled in from Michigan.

More and Wohlabaugh portaled in on OL.

Reed is a JUCO.

We brought in Price from portal.

DeMarcus Adams was from portal and was at FSU at one time.

If we didn't portal all those guys on offense, our QB would have been MacPhail and who knows what the OL would have looked like.

I will stand by my assertion that our young WR have potential.

But on O we have been a mess.

So cry about the portal and NIL all you want. We have used it too.

And the losses on D were offset by the portal. Not saying it was an equal offset. But our D ranking this year vs last is only down slightly.

Our O, is a mess because Dino either missed on his recruits and his evaluation for offensive prospects, or he and his staffs failed to develop them to the system he wanted ran.

Either way, it's an indictment on the guy in charge of the program for the last eight years

On a side note, her son Kevin, an unrecruited player from upstate New York (where there supposedly are no recruits to be had), has turned into handful. Making some real beastly impact plays.
It's not that there aren't recruits to be had, it's just that there aren't enough. Do you know where you go Duck hunting? Where the Ducks are.

Both Dan V and GS were also from the portal.

No and he wasn’t the guy we hired as soon as he got his extension. What happened to the locker room speeches? Going for it on 4th down a lot? Seemed to lose his fire completely

Great analogy.
Look at UGA’s roster, and where the players are from. We could do this all day long - I won’t - but the talent is down south. Blue states like New York have seen a huge decline in youth football - and the talent level - as people declare football is dangerous or have migrated south and west the last 20+ years.

And compare with Oregon, who actually has to duck hunt outside their backyard.
