All i got from that letter is Dino is a good guy. A lot of these kids are recruited for 2-3 years before playing another 4-5 (or in some cases 6-7) seasons with this HC. They become more than just a coach so i understand the emotion. Still Dino got more than enough time to prove he was the guy but there were several key areas he was very poor at that can’t happen at a place like Syracuse. In order this is where i believe Dino fell short.
1. Identifying talent. It seems we stumbled on a couple guys like Bergeron, Tucker, and OG, but it took 2 injuries for Tucker to see the field and OG played behind Anthony Queeley and Courtney Jackson for a year. Identifying OL talent was the most drastic and obvious struggle. Marrone proved that there is enough uncovered talent in the NE that you can develop into solid OL’s if you know what you’re doing.
2. Developing talent. As JW said and as we all know, Syracuse is a school that is going to have to develop the talent. I can’t think of many kids who got progressively better as their careers went on. A lot of the same guys either started or played a lot as a freshman until they graduated or left. Jamal Custis could be an example but i believe he was a Shafer recruit. I honestly can’t think of many kids who didn’t play their first couple seasons but came on as upperclassmen.
3. Outside of Tucker and OG he missed on every single skill position recruit over an 8 year period. Is Taj Harris the 2nd best recruit Babers identified and developed? Allen seems like he will be good. He plays hard but lacks that 2nd gear. Totally unacceptable. Even Shafer had guys like Dungey, Erv, Custis, Ishmael, Neal, Strickland.
4. Discipline. Taken into account what is stated above you would think we would be a program that has to pride themselves on discipline. No, we were consistently one of the most penalized teams in the ACC and a lot of them were pre-snap fouls with false starts, or not lining up properly. Him stating that penalities are a part of football has to be the stupidest thing i’ve ever heard a HC say. It would be one thing if these were penalties on live plays like holding, face mask, etc, but these were mental mistakes. I’ve never seen a team get as many pre snap flags that got us behind the chains as Dino’s teams.
5. Clock management. Absolutely atrocious. In that 3 game stretch in 2021 where we lost by 3 points each game to FSU, Clemson, and WF there was a major game management error, or a terrible in game decision. Three straight games against the top programs in the conference and the HC was a major reason each game was lost. Imagine if we won 1 or even 2. Instead of 5-7, we are 6-6, or 6-7, and going to a bowl.
6. Lack of aggression. Dino came in as an aggressive HC who wasn’t afraid to go for it on 4th down. Until the last 2 games where he let it rip he was turned into an overly conservative HC who defied analytics. Hell i don’t even think he had an analytics sheet to go off of.
7. Lack of emotion on the sidelines. I really feel we didn’t get some calls we should have because of his demeanor on the sideline and his unwillingness to press the officials. I’m not asking for a Dazzler or Schiano performance but show some life and stand up for your guys when you think there should be a penalty. Guys on the team notice that type of stuff when they feel their HC doesn’t have their back. That’s why you always see NBA HC’s or good college HC’s work the officials when they see their players complaining of a lack of a call.
Some where along the way Dino lost his way and turned into the anthesis of the HC we hired. Just like the basketball program i think we need a jolt of energy and a total reset. I think Chesney is that guy. He already has relationships with all the NE High School’s but now he gets to sell a P5 program. I think a high energy guy like him who has proven he can win and is familiar with the area can be a home run hire. Hiring someone like Dino who had no NE roots made recruiting tough. It seemed each year the recruits t plan changed and we were forced to develop relationships all over the country. If you have a HC who can identify and develop talent i think there is enough talent in a 6 hour radius or a 1.5 hour flight to win, as well as supplementing that with kids from the ACC footprint in NC, GA, and FL.
