Dino Presser | Apr 28

Babers on the extremely low-key spring: "We just wanted to make sure we got our practices in. Based off what our Covid rules are in New York, there wasn't going to be much of a spring game." He said that he wanted guys to be able to "focus" and "lock in" on their work.

Babers on QB competition: "I think that competition is healthy." He points to 10-3 season as having good depth there that produced strong play. No specifics on DeVito/Shrader.

More Babers on the QBs: "I think we've got the best room since we've been here." Said Lamson, Markiewicz and Morgan have all had strong moments. Morgan coming off a concussion. DeVito and Shrader have been "fabulous."

Babers on offensive line play: "The coolest thing is this: they've been there every single day. ... I really like where we're going with the top six, eight guys." On new OL coach Mike Schmidt: "I think he's come in and he's putting his personality on the group."

Babers said he expects to have media allowed into preseason camp as long as they're vaccinated. He's looking forward to a return to normalcy. Of course, the lack of in-person opportunities this spring didn't restrict the program from setting up video interviews.

Babers on the RBs: "I think the biggest thing is I think that group is really good." Said he believes that unit "from top to bottom" is the best RB room he's had in six years at the helm. "I think as a group, Orange nation, should be really excited for the backs we have."

Babers on the early enrollees: "They came in and were walking around like, 'What's going on?'" Dino tells the same story about QB Justin Lamson getting swarmed by the DL on Day 1 and laughs heartily. Said he saw guys adjust to speed over the spring. Mentions DL Terry Lockett.

The real advantage for those guys comes in August compared to their classmates who have yet to experience the speed and strength of ACC players.

Dino Babers on Syracuse having three defensive backs potentially being picked in the NFL Draft this year: "I think it's a great recruiting tool. Obviously, it means you can come to Syracuse and have your dreams fulfilled."

Dino Babers declines to name spring standouts, but said it's clear to everyone at practice who is developing. Jokes that DB Ja'Had Carter has been in his ear all spring about an offensive player who has made significant growth.

Dino Babers said FB Chris Elmore has showcased his hands this spring after dropping a couple of passes earlier in his career.

Guesses on who Ja’Had has been excited about?

I’m guessing Williams

It could literally be anyone. I hope Alford. Really pulling for him. Would be happy if it's Mahar too

My money is on Courtney Jackson or Cooper Lutz.

Is this a boost on the FanDuel betting app?
I certainly hope it is a WR and not Lutz. Love Lutz but not sure there is anything he could do to be better than the the #3 RB on the team. He could cause teams nightmares though in hybrid type role.

Personally think Lutz is going to be number 2 RB. Howard number 3. Not sure where Adam’s fits in with these backs.
Also wasn’t kinselers cousin supposed to be on campus as a pwo RB?

Think Howard’s physically prepared for a PTG like season to Tucker’s Jerome Smith.

Betcha a tray full of Dome dogs its Alford.

Starting WR day 1

Outside L - Q
Outside R - Damien Alford
Inside - Harris/Pena
Well, this is kind of a blind thing, but I will play.

It has to be a player who hasn’t played much before. That eliminates Harris and Queeley.

Probably a WR given Carter is a safety. It could be a TE and if it is a TE, it is almost surely Mahar, who appears to be emerging.

Of the young WRs, the ones who appear in pictures and videos the most are clearly Alford and Jackson. They look to be the WRs most likely to crack the rotation right now.

They both played some last season, but didn’t have much success. From studying the practice videos, Jackson appears to be getting a lot of reps this spring.

I am with Chip on this. Think it is Courtney. And I think Courtney starts this fall.

Based on the 7 seconds of video I saw of him this spring.

Second most likely is Alford, and 3rd most likely is Mahar.

Washington (Kinsler's brother) hasn't played in a while and had a nasty knee injury in high school. I would temper expectations with him for now

Well, this is kind of a blind thing but Jackson got some PT in the slot last year, was definitely ahead of Pena and from studying the practice videos, he appears to be getting a lot of reps this spring.

I have been rewatching games from last year (masochist) and Jackson easily led the team in drops, easily.

Also, Dino made it sound like it was a 2nd year player, at least to me.

I mean, we would all have better luck predicting the weather anyways, I just want to buy True some dome dogs (I was going to win or lose, don‘t tell him)
