Dino's Game 10 Press Conference | FSU

Babers: “5-1 at the Dome. We want to end on a positive note. We need our 12th man behind us.” Babers urges Otto’s Army to show out in final home game.

Senior Walk after game. Team will go into locker room post game, then Seniors will return to the field.

No injury comments. Hopefully Ellis will be back.

Babers: “We only had the ball 48 times. One-third of our offense went through Sean Tucker. When you convert on third downs, you have more opportunities [with Tucker].”

Tucker is full speed, and even if he was hurt, I wouldn't be able to comment.

Babers on rush defense: “The big thing is limiting big rushing plays and being able to get off the field on third down…those are the things we want to change.”

5-18 in November. Babers on late-season preparations: “The ACC Atlantic is physical…our team is getting banged up. Everyone’s getting banged up so nobody’s playing the violin for us. But we need to find ways to win.”

Enrique Cruz filled in at right tackle and Dakota Davis slid over to fill Kalan Ellis’s spot. Babers said Cruz did okay in his first start.

Hoping that Shrader will be healthier, but players won't meet with team docs until this afternoon. Has a "owie" that we're sensitive to.

Babers on DE Jatius Geer: “He’s growing up right in front of our eyes. He’s somebody who I see going from a baby bear to a grizzly.”

Babers: “Oronde is a good player. He’s going to get double-teamed. We are still going to get him the football.” Gadsden was targeted five times with no catches.

We really haven't given up big runs. The issue is we give up 5 yards almost every run. By blind luck you should be able to get a few TFLs on runs when you know the run is coming and you play with smaller quicker DL/LBs. Getting into a 2nd and 11 or a 3rd and 6 is what we need. We should be able to do that at least once a drive. But I don't think we had a single TFL combined vs ND and the first 3 Qs vs Pitt.

There were 4-5 TFLs against ND, not great

On runs or is that sacks?

Edit

According to ESPN PxP we had 3 TFLs vs ND on 48 RB runs. Against Pitt we had 1 in the first 3 Qs and only 2 for the entire game vs 42 RB runs. That is 90 rushes the last 2 games and we have 5 TFLs. How is that possible?

the Pitt game was so damn frustrating, we definitely gave up too many 5-6 yard rushing plays but we also held them to a low YPC and yards overall, we won the turnover battle 2-0 while allowing 17 points. the offense only had to be mediocre and not 2005 SU football bad to win that football game, but the latter happened.

Exactly. The bend but don’t break is frustrating in that type of game but TW gave us all the opportunity in the world to win.

Unfortunate that they're doing the senior walk at around 11:30 pm. Can't imagine many will still be there. Especially if the game is essentially over earlier.

Taking a deeper look we are pretty bad this year. The only ACC team with less TFLs vs FBS teams is UNC. Not the company you want to keep. Last year we were 7th and in 2020 10th. Only Dino's 1st year were we worse, that includes Shafer's 3 years.

Comparing players (min 3 TFL)...

Mikel
2021 13.0
2022 5.5

Wax
2021 9.0
2022 8.5

Thompson
2021 8.0

The LBs are a lot worse. Mikel hasn't been as good and no one has stepped up for Thompson. The DL is missing a Roscoe. The others are pretty similar to the players that we lost. Surprising to see the CBs so high last year.

I think the LBs are playing more conservative this year to help/protect the DL vs being more free wheeling or blitzing resulting in fewer TFL.

Here’s an easier way to help stop the run and get the enemy off the field on third downs.

Sustain an offensive drive. Give our D a breather. They’ve outperformed the O for several years

Another reason why I think that IF we must roll with CDRW this Saturday, the triple option should be strongly considered.

By constantly saying Tucker is healthy, isn't Dino devaluing the kids draft value? If he's healthy then why isn't he performing? Just ignore the question or say we have to do a better job blocking for him. In my opinion he is not himself. No question.

And I'm tired of hearing it's a physical league. If we are getting banged up and everyone else is getting banged up, why do other teams adjust better than us?

We’re still playing catch-up in the depth department though it’s getting better. And while everyone has injuries, nobody has had the number we’ve had this year. Down 9 starters Saturday. Don’t think another ACC school was down that many.

I think dirty Louisville injured him. Playing them early was both a blessing and a curse.

BTW can someone in the media please ask Dino why do we constantly have a TE blocking the DE 1 v 1 while the T blocks no one. It happens like 5-6 times a game. These aren't blitzes either. It is a 4 man rush. I rather see the TE off the LOS and the OL have wider splits. What is the point in going max protect if the better blocker is doing nothing? The TE should be there to assist, not be the primary blocker.

The LBs are not worse. I suspect it's because the DL is built different and just off the cuff I don't think we've blitzed the LB's anywhere near how much we blitzed them last year. This is primarily where they get their TFL.
