Dino's Game 8 Press Conference for Va Tech: 11 AM

Shrader needs to spend the off season with a great qb coach. He will be much improved next year. He has what you cant teach.
Leadership
Vision
Pocket awareness
Running ability
Improvise
Size
Toughness.

He can work on the mechanics.
I hope so because I'm pretty sure he worked with one last offseason. Some guys can improve their passing skills at this level, some are what they are at this point. He has shown some improvement from his 1st start throwing the ball on the intermediate passes. Where he struggles most are the long sideline (we also don't block well on any sideline pass) and deep passes. Hopefully, the TD throw to Pena is a harbinger of things to come. I'm also hopeful it'll help when we get our big receivers like Alford and Gadsden on the field for more snaps.

Also a couple of those first down throws on that last drive. Scrambled, bought time, found an open receiver.

That was sorely missed from the offense in 2019 and 2020.

the decision to throw that pass was even worse than the actual pass. No idea what he was thinking when he threw it.

The pass I'd like back is the miss to Cooper on a slant at midfield. Cooper catches than and it's a likely TD. Instead he sailed it 10 feet over his head.
Was that the play where the linebacker jumped up to try to intercept it?

Did no one watch the Bills game last night?

4 and 1 and they……. WENT FOR IT. Now, they didn’t make it because the actual playcall was HORRIBLE.

however, most people are praising McDermott saying he made the right call to go for it 4th and 1 to try and win the game instead of the tie. They were a chip shot away.

You have to go for it instead of trying to have Andre kick that fg when he’s been struggling. If we had “momentum” which we did…you try to keep driving and pound it in and win the game…

Indefensible on Dino in my opinion no matter what he says…

Call was fine execution was mind blowingly horrendous and the 245 pound QB slipped. If you can't get a 1/2 yard that's on the 11 guys out there. Buffalo/ Tenny front isn't the same as SU versus Clemson front.

To me it's about execution and match ups not some guy playing Madden in the booth when it comes to a 1/2 yard. If they throw a fade or Daboll tries something cute people would have gone nuts and every jack hole on TV and radio would be saying why not sneak your 245 pound QB, surely he would get a 1/2 yard. The titans beat the bills o line and the qb slipped.

Call to go for it on 4th was fine, the sneak call was fine, execution absolutely horrific

We actually scored our first TD on that drive, so in the end it wasn't as bad as it was in the moment.

The INT seemed like a panic when he didn't really need to.

He was better in the 4th quarter, but almost threw a bad pick there too.

The pass to Queeley on the OPI was maybe the best. Queeley wasn't even running a route, he was blocking the DB with his back turned to the QB.

Clemson is a hard game to judge. So much talent, there's a level of intimidation.
Yes we scored but having a slant go the distance would have delayed Clemson’s focus on Tucker.

It was simply a fluky execution that could not have been worse timing. 10 out of 10 you run that. Real sick way to end though. And yeah... between that and Friday's ending. Tough week for me.

Agree 100%, it happens. People get so carried away analyzing this stuff. Titans blew it up, Felciano and dawkins were tossed around like rag dolls and Allen slipped. If he had a head of steam maybe he could have taken contact and pushed through but he was already heading down and had zero momentum

I mean if Daboll does something weird and it worked he's a genius, if not he would be crucified. goes with the territory. The call was fine, most times a sneak is called everybody out there knows it's coming and it works the majority of the the time.

What if he saved the 2 point conversion for the call there? That would have been something

Game was riddled with fluky moments, too.

'When asked if he believes TD can succeed at another school, Babers declined to answer publicly.'

I don't think Dino is trying to signal that TD isn't going to be a good QB at his next school but this looks weird. Why can't he just give some generic response of support?
His generic response has been "I don't comment on people not part of the program anymore."

Which is whatever...but I feel like Dino is a little petty on this front. Just say he's a good player and that you hope he does well.

so you want to go for it on 4th and then run again to gain more yds for a shorter kick and then hope to get the clock stopped again. Cause if you make first down and throw the way we throw now its a danger thing and we lost the game on that throw earlier in the game. and how much are we talking 2-3 yds closer after a sneak and a run unless we the play and break one and they play working most all game was one that has a high chance to lose yds too..
Dino took a time out before 3rd down. Call two plays incase you don’t make on 3rd(we didn’t). Maybe run speed to get Clemson unorganized.

Isn’t it Clemson that had trouble with not being set in a few games because they call in plays last minute? Clock stops on 1st, run a couple outs to get closer or take a shot down the field. You still have one turnout left. Maybe we score a TD or maybe get a more manageable FG.

I don’t think anyone would complain if Dino went for it on 4th and not made it

If our kicker cant make 48 yarder then we need to limit all kicks to like 40 yds from here on out..

I was not upset he kicked at all.. but then the kick only went about 45 yds on top of being off line..

I would not have been upset at trying to go for it either. I also didnt trust we would score and it wouldnt end up like BC last year and not even getting a play off at the end.

Buffalo lost the game because they failed twice during the game on that play. But they were clearly a better team. If we could throw just a little we are the better team vs Clemson , really they made 4-5 really tough catches to get them to score at all.

If they got the 1st down, it would have put clemson on the defensive as they would have had to come out of their 8 man front. Su could have had quite a few plays there with first downs and the timeout left. Also, why doesn't Dino do tickeration?

I don't think anyone would have complained about the decision, but if we didn't get it, people would have complained about the playcall. Nature of the beast.

I'm sure there are some who would have said we have a Groza award winner, but that accuracy of the field goal kicking process hasn't been a part of this year's team.

I know anything goes in overtime, but if Clemson just threw 3 passes up to those monster WRs, odds seemed pretty good they'd come down with one. Which is also what they would have done with that 35 seconds left to try to get a game winning field goal. I still don't know why they didn't just do that more during the game itself.

I’m surprised Clemson wasn’t just heaving 50/50 balls as well. With their WR size they are more 70/30 like balls.

I think if Ross or Ngata are in Orange we win that game

I loved Ross's wide open drop, then limp off, then come back on the field a few plays later.

Sorry coach, can't talk, have to go see the trainer.

His response is pretty much standard HR fair and in the court of public relations it's fine and maybe what he's being advised to say.

3rd quarter was a bloodbath for Tucker - 3 rushes for -4 yards.
Overall in the 2nd half - 10 rushes for 25 yards (+ 2 catches for 20 yards)
Perhaps had something to do with Dino's decision to go for the FG?

I’m sure Schiano is showing that play to recruits. Wouldn’t he say the old turf was bad for ankles or something

That drop was bad but he’s made some amazing catches
