Dino's Week 4 LSU Press Conference Notes / Depth Chart

He had, what, 2 15 yard penalties and a 10 yarder that cost SU a TD? Not quite the breakout performance that I was hoping from him this year. It's still early.
He seems frustrated to me. Not sure what the issue is but I think he deserves more targets. Definitely expected him to get more looks. He works hard, haven't seen him miss a block yet. You have to reward the grind from a guy like that.

I've been in the camp that we haven't played his card yet. Not even sure we see it this weekend. I think HCDB might feel out the first half see if we have a chance or not before opening up the playbook.

Agree!

Dino wants to win games. If cutting Pierce loose will help get a win, the shackles (if they are on) will come off.

Is this really a possibility? Why wait to get to him more involved in the offense? I feel like we are waiting to unleash teen wolf based on what I read on here. If he is really that much of a difference maker we could have used him for the Middle Tennessee game.

If HCDB were truly, deliberately holding this ace up the sleeve and chose not to play that card in the 2nd half of the MTSU game then I don't know what to say. The offense was completely overmatched in that game and we resorted to making our one-hit-away-from-retirement QB our primary running back. If ever a situation screamed for a new wrinkle or strategy that was it.

My opinion is the same as it has been... the line isn't great so Pierce is needed for blocking and Dungey does not do a good job in the middle of the field. Not sure why we don't have any seam passes up the middle to Pierce when the other team blitzes but whatever.

Agreed. Sorry, but there's no way Babers is thinking during the MTSU game "well, we're down. Maybe I should open the playbook for Ravian. We could use him. hmmm...Nah, let's keep things they way they are and unleash him another day."

I've been reading a lot about how Baylor's offense evolved from year one up till the "end". I would like to see this " The wrinkle they added here was to run the play with a TE on the field and have him running a POP route. QB Chris Johnson reads the middle linebacker here. If he covers the TE then that means that Baylor's RB is in a 1-on-1 match-up with the free safety who has to arrive quickly or else make a tackle in space. If the middle linebacker had followed the flow and filled behind the weak-side linebacker then the QB throws a quick route up the seam to the tight end. North Carolina opted for the safety v RB option, a battle they routinely lost in devastating fashion."

If you go back and watch the MTSU game, it seems pretty clear that a big part of the strategy was to keep Pierce and Strick tied up in protection. Whenever Pierce was lined up on the front the overload would almost always come from his side. It seems (to me) he also tried to make Strick cross the pocket to pick up the blitz, preventing him from slipping out to the play side. A few of the sacks were from the back not seeing the pressure come from the far side. Then they adjusted and got stuck in protect. The one time Neal got loose Dungey muffed the throw. Shaf clearly did not want the ball going to those guys, especially in a delay situation which would leave the underneath zones vacated. Excellent design and situational calls on his part. Guy calls it like a riverboat gambler but he knows the odds.

I tried to tell people Black was going inside.

You were right, and I said I couldn't see it unless he gained 30 lbs. but now that he's moved how much is he going to really contribute at 250?

You can't be serious

I thought Pierce's unsportsmanlike was total crap. He was on a pile and the cmu guy hit him in the back, pierce stands up quick turns around and gives him a little face mask head butt. The guy he hit didn't even move. It should have been a 'knock it off' non call. The flag on that was BS.

I think the refs were real nervous that any little confrontation was going to escalate into something bigger, so they erred on the side of caution and threw the flag prematurely. At least that's what I'd like to think. I do agree though, they probably didn't need to throw the flag on that play.

That was Staniszak (or however he spells it)

I can actually agree with this. There was lots of chirping going on out there, and I 'm sure the ref's thought it was getting out of hand and needed to control it before it did escalate.

I think they were feeling the heat and it was making them uncomfortable. I think in the back of their minds they felt slighted that SU would try to save some money by not turning the air conditioning on.
