BC dropped D1 lacrosse in 2002. I really don't know why. They do play club lacrosse and are in the MCLA, competing against the likes of S. Carolina, Clemson, UConn, etc. UNC and NC State even have club teams they play against.

Changes to sweep men's lacrosse program

HEIGHTS STAFF Unfortunately, the men's lacrosse team is living on borrowed time. The clock is ticking on their life as a varsity sport at Boston College, because in four years the team will be reduced to club status in order to comply with the Title IX ruling on gender equity in the NCAA. Lacrosse, water polo and wrestling are the lame-duck men's teams that were chosen for reduction.

Reading the article, it sounds like campus politics.

At a public meeting last week, one lacrosse player illustrated the problems that Title IX has created. "Before the meeting was adjourned," Coach Moy recalls, "one of the lacrosse players asked those people in attendance how many scholarships they thought we had. And the chairman of the internal gender equity committee said, 'I should know that, but I don't know.' The young man said, 'Well, we have zero.' The looks on the faces were amazing. They were in shock." Title IX. conceptually, is a fine idea that seems like it's being misapplied. As the wrongs of the past are amended, student-athletes are forced to pay the price of mistakes made before any of them were born.

It’s no different than VT. Have girls lax but only men’s club teams. Maybe Clemson too.

The MCLA is the governing body for collegiate club lacrosse and it is legit. Two divisions. Nine conferences. National championships.

Some great lacrosse being played at the college club level. Not everywhere but definitely high level at the top programs (pun intended).

Best chance for an ACC sixth team, in my opinion, is Georgia Tech. They have a top tier MCLA men’s team in the waiting and they would like to add a women’s soccer team, so they have a Title IX offset program. Facilities seem to be the impediment as NCAA requires certain minimums at the D1 level that are challenging for the city campus at GaTech.

Growth of lacrosse in Atlanta, traditional prep school recruits (so academics align), and the instant credibility of the ACC are also benefits to Tech. They also don’t field a Men’s soccer team which could be supported instead of lacrosse.

The main interest for me is why BC would sponsor Men's soccer rather than Men's lacrosse. It seems to me that BC would have a better chance to win at lacrosse than soccer.

More likely Georgia Tech in the MCLA than UNC (they've been in a couple of MCLA Final 4s). My understanding is that the MCLA doesn't allow clubs from schools that have a varsity team and schools with varsities have to be in the NCLL.

Yes. Correct on both counts. Pitt also has varsity ACC WLax but no men's team.

VPI had a men's team in the 80s but disbanded it. Maybe losing 27-0 to UVa was an impetus?

bc's athletic director at the time, gene? difilippo supposedly was not a fan at all. they may not have been giving schollies (as several big east teams weren't... nova, providence), but there are still costs to run a program, as well as staff time for oversight and everything else. plus lacrosse wasn't nearly the big deal in new england that it is now. just some NE preps.

also, the big east started to have some separation bt their department sizes and budgets and the other p5 conferences. by the time 'cuse and bc and rutgers found new homes, they went from $2-3 million in conference media money to $20m. and bc had high end men's hockey, which probably brought in at least some revenue and the potential for mega donors down the line from the sport in addition to wall street.

as far as why soccer vs lax, maybe based on how many big east teams were playing.

i will say based only on the success of the women's team that it's a possibility with the right AD. still unlikely without major funding in today's environment, tho.

It required/requires fewer (9) scholarships (subject the the recent settlement)? Men’s soccer could not field a team of full scholarship players.

Most of the schools that have a women's team in a sport, but not a men's team, are using the women's team to boost their Title IX numbers. That's the case with BC, Louisville, VPI, Pitt, Clemson, and Florida State WLax, SEC (minus Kentucky and South Carolina) WSoccer, and ACC (minus SU, Stanford, and Cal) WRowing.
