DO: Burn The Boats

I assume it was about the big Senior Class and their last attempt at getting a title. I get it but certainly the program isn't gonna shutter no matter the results of this years team, although I think its clear this is probably the best shot at a title for at least the next few years.
Only area where there is a serious gap is righty attack. If we find a quality option out of the portal there then this party goes on. All the mids except Rhoa are back. Mullen, Figgy, and McCool return. 3 of the 4 ssdms. I believe Chuck K could take another year? That would mean all the LSMs besides Sageder return as well. Between Anderson Kraftson Deere and Peck I feel good about lefty attack options. Really it is just that righty attack spot that is concerning, especially given who we need to replace. Our defense has been quality this year and Dwan is the only major replacement there next season. Not saying it would be a repeat of this year talent wise, but that is still a quality team.

It is not the main issue with the slogan but it does feel a little insulting to the returning talent next season.

Chuck will be back.

I'd imagine we would look to add at least one right hander, specifically a good feeder/passer, in the portal, who and from where I'm not too sure, but I'd at least try because if we can get a good passer to pair with our set of shooters and defense, we could be very good.

I agree that the team will still be very talented but we do lose a lot especially compared to the other ACC schools as Duke and UNC return almost everyone (on offense at least).

We lose the entire starting attack, and 2 of our three close defenders and one starting SSDM. Now I think SU has enough pole depth to make up for it (Dwan will be a huge loss) and we bring in the top pole in the class but attack is a major question mark even with Deere returning.

SU will almost certainly be looking for an Attackmen in the portal, in fact I assume it will be it's #1 priority/target. Assuming no one unexpected leaves that leaves you with Deere and I assume Anderson or Kraftson at attack with a third attackmen pending. Peck and Meyer are two big time recruits who will certainly be in the mix but I think SU will want a Veteran attack presence as part of the competition as well and Deere's injury makes him an unknown and he's not much of a dodging threat. Meyer burning his RS this year may come back to haunt us.

Middie would be Hottle and then I assume some combo of McIntee, Hahn, Anderson if he's not attack McCarthy (assuming he's not at SSDM full time) with Rawson, Tucker, and one or two others in the mix. I believe Rayfield could play a role as well though I think he maybe moved to attack.

Defensively I feel pretty good. Dwan and Beck are big losses but Fig will be back, CHuck K actually has two more years, SSDM bring back a lot of depth and you have Filardi with the rust knocked off. You bring in James who should have a chance to start right away plus you have D'Agostino and a few others I know the staff likes in Stephens and Cam Ryan (hurt) etc. You in theory also have Donny Scott assuming he is actually healthy which in 3 years to date he hasn't been. Jimmy is back and Johnny so ya a lot of really good players but Offense is definitely a concern.

"As Indigenous alumni of SU, we urge that this matter be addressed immediately. Any use of the phrase “burn the boats” should cease. The entire men’s program staff should be mandated to attend cultural competency trainings. Above all, the program and Odierna should issue a public apology and Odierna should be held accountable for his poor lapse in judgement."

They should schedule Nick Saban and Deebo Sweeney with coach O. lol

This is where you [the authors] "lose" people. I think it's a reasonable for the authors to express their perspective and concerns. I think it's reasonable for Men's Lacrosse to go, "we didn't realize and that wasn't our intention; we'll stop using the mantra and wearing the shirts."

That's all that needs to happen. Sometimes, being ignorant is just being ignorant. It doesn't require teams losing, competency training, etc. If Odierna wants to apologize that's up to him.

While I am not the person to speak on behalf of Indigenous Peoples (I'm not one), it is fair to say they are not a monolith. Others may feel differently than the authors. If this is about a broader message about colonization (which I fear it is given that the Aztecs had nothing to do with lacrosse/The Medicine Game, and it's highly unlikely that the sports originators even knew that the Aztecs or Cortes existed given the geographic disparity) sorry authors, you're just yelling into the wind at this point.

Your right but giving these type of people power annoys me. If your going to talk about history how about you include the other teams that have used the saying prior to Syracuse.

The authors are SU alums (one author's dad is SU lacrosse royalty [maybe an overstatement]); it's fine if they don't give a crap what Dabo or Saban think.

The phrase was always a little "too cute" or try hard-y. Why not just use "Total Commitment" like you suggest?

Smh this PC stuff is beyond ridiculous. Nobody who uses the made up slogan is using it in the context of a Spanish conquistador from 500 years ago. Alexander the Great burned his ships to. It means no retreat. It doesn't mean enslaving and conquering. This stuff is so lame. It's a great slogan.

So dumb- the phrase is clearly intended to represent a full commitment. Like most universities these days, SU is snowflake central.

Yeah, unsurprisingly I am seeing just as much of not more backlash against no longer using the warmups as I am for using them in the first place

None of the “backlash” matters at all fortunately. In either direction. It’s really nothing, and I am very confident the players themselves will not care either way if we wear the shirts or not. Certainly no way in hell we punish John O for this lol. Just something for insane people on twitter to get worked up over for a couple hours.

This is true

Nothing riles up terminally online Lax fans than something "woke" affecting the sport.

I expect Ghetto Gary Gait and NCL will have a field day with this.
This is not to say that everyone who is replying to this is in that group, they arn't.

they should stop wearing the shirts because its a severely overused phrase that a million other teams have already adopted as their slogan...at least think of something original
