Heading into Notre Dame?

This team has no reason to get ahead of themselves or look past teams. I’m just noticing the next several games gives us a chance to get back on track and continue whatever momentum last night may spark.

Not sure I remember a stretch of winnable games like this in conference in recent history. Hope the team can focus and play with confidence.

We just lost at Pittsburgh.
I will take 14-13 going to ND.
Playing Saturday, Monday with our depth I will take a split.
If I’m being 100% honest, and I’m not trying to downplay how horrid that loss was..

We could have been a top 25 team and I’d still say we have a toss up chance of losing to a garbage pitt at pitt.

For whatever reason, we slip on that banana peel annually and its not a recent woe.

That said we also have other garbage losses.

I don’t think it’s impossible, but unlikely.

With that said, assuming our guys stay healthy, the road is there to get our sea legs back over the next few weeks.

It truly depends on if JB trusts his bench imo.

theres gonna be a game or two where he needs to sit a certain player (not even specifying who) and if he pulls the trigger AND the bench player comes through, which isn’t even 100 percent, then the game could turn around.

im sure there will be a game like pitt again too.

One game at a time.

I felt we had a chance to go on a good run after the Clemson win and the near Florida State loss. Then there was the Duke debacle, which I wasn’t as bothered by since Duke is just so much more athletic than us. The Pitt second half no-show loss was mystifying. The team that beat Wake is the team I thought they could be coming into the season if all the pieces came together. Yes, we shot the ball really well, but the difference in the win was the active, hands-up defense (and making the correct rotations) in the second half and for portions of the first half. This team can win some games and finish above .500 if they play with some confidence and play smart and with intensity on the defensive end.

I hope so, but it's hard to tell with this team. Comparing the Pittsburgh game vs last night shows the polar opposites of what this team is capable of doing.

They definitely have it in them. The question is: how will they continue to perform in close games? We have had a ton, and there isn't much separating us from pretty much any team in the ACC sans Duke. We could go on a run, or we could continue to be schizophrenic. The history of JB's teams shows that the former is more likely, but I'm not sure if this team has the pieces to make that likely. I did like the tinkering with the substitution patterns last night, and that does give me hope.

Unfortunately I don’t even know what a “run” outside of an ACC tourney win would do. NIT, i guess.

Really, impossible to say. Because they are so mediocre, when they put things together and have a great game like last night they can beat anyone, or conversely they can play poorly and lose to anyone.

There isn't a ton of consistency, which is why they've struggled through what should have been a relatively easy preseason schedule, and first 2/3 of ACC conference schedule.

So could they? Sure. Will they? Highly unlikely.

Can't agree with the bolded part, but the rest of your post is the way I feel.

This team has shown it can be competitive with the top teams in the conference, except Duke. It’s also shown it can lose to the worst teams in this conference, as well as bad teams outside the conference.

With a performance history like that, I’d assume we continue to bounce around .500 for the rest of the year.

I was hoping JB could get to 1,000 “official” wins this season. I think he’s at 992, so they need to find a way to win 8 more games. It’s a bit of a long shot, but still an outside possibility. 10 regular season games left plus (hopefully) a couple in the ACCt. 8 out of 12 seems unlikely, but you never know.

Last night represented the third game in a row we have held a team under 1.00 PPP and that is the longest stretch of games so far we have done so. We are 1-2 in that stretch.

If we can effectively keep our opponents under that marker is key. The next key is that we need to come in at the 1.14 ppp offensively we currently are at night in night out. We can't be alternating weak offensive performances with good ones similar to our defensive trends this year. There needs to be a constant with the strength of this team.

Last night represented positive contributions from the bench, good all around play from Buddy and solid games from Cole and Joe. If those things continue we can possibly win as many games as they do so.

We have a soft couple of weeks schedule wise coming up. Taking into consideration we play somewhat like last might, my best guess is we go 5-1. With the 1 loss just a normal blip. We split the last 4 against ND, Duke, UNC and Miami - that = 17-14. We have to get to the ACC championship game - get that 20th win and hope that in the eyes of the selection team we are worthy. Another bubble coin toss. Will we have enough quality wins vs the ugly losses? Who of the last 4 teams mentioned above are most likely wins, ND, Duke, UNC, Miami? And which of the 4 would impress the committee the most besides beating Duke?

And 17-14 guarantees that 'the streak' continues.

We had a lot of people get in the lane last night and either kicked it for an open threes or dump downs to our bigs. We we’re more active on both ends. They looked like a different team. Now we have to go on the road for a 9:00 game and play with the same energy even if our shots don’t fall as often. The big question with this team is can they bear down on defense if shots aren’t falling?

Unfortunately I think our lack of quality wins combined with some very bad losses puts any bubble or at large talk completely out of the realm of possibilities at this point in time. There’s only a couple of quality win opportunities left in the ACC, and those probably won’t be enough even if we were able to win. We’d basically have to lose only one more regular season game and make a deep ACCt run to even be part of the conversation.

I think NIT is a more realistic ceiling for this team if they can get close to 18 wins.

This team has been too inconsistent. But Buddy finding his swagger and Cole finding his confidence can take us further than I would have predicted before last night.

The only thing consistent about this team this year has been inconsistency. Seems like every aspect of basketball has cost them a game or two this season.

At this point my primary goal is that we're 11-11 after a trip to Raleigh Wednesday night.

Yeah, Buddy has had some good games this year, but not like last night.

Last night's performance was reminiscent of last year, when he was feeling it, scoring in a multitude of ways, and dialed in from three. The kind of games he started having at the end of last season / the postseason, where he could put the team on his back.
