I'm watching Derik Queen, who Donnie was similarly ranked, and thinking that Donnie wants to be in the same position to win an NCAA tournament game. Can Red convince him to have it be in a Syracuse uniform?

When we landed Donnie at that #6 national ranking at 6’9”, I was hoping we were getting a Jabari Smith or the accessory-to-murder guy that went to Alabama (forget his name), but he wasn’t on either of their levels despite the similar ranking and size. Still, I think you need some level of continuity and he’s the most talented player on the roster, so pay him and see if he can develop.

He was developing until he got hurt (and it looked like he may have been hurt all along.) His season would have gotten better and better.

I was thinking he had a gimp in his trot down the court before the injury announcement too.

Yes, getting paid is going to be important, but having a players to play with has to be there as well. Who is he going to play with at SU. The Fr coming in aren't likely to help turn it around even if Donnie is back. It's going to take some portal additions that matter. Is Donnie going to hold off and see how its going, or get on a team that has a core and also will pay

All these questions were on the table when the school extended Red for another year.

Either Red and Kline can or can't get the players Red needs in the portal. The fact that Red is a potential lame duck hot seat coach is an added hurdle.

If the can't get the players, then we have another rough year ahead and we'll have a new coach for 2026-27.

I agree, he is the most important player to keep, but we better develop the heck out of jim so if healthy, he becomes a lotto pick next year

So I would think two things with his "run it back" message. First money was addressed sufficient to keep him. Second he had to be given some indication of who they are targeting in the portal I would think. Hard to believe he would return if he thought that the cupboard was completely bare.
