Donnie Freeman injures foot

We aren't making the dance with or without Donnie, but let's stop this madness that we are somehow better without him.

He was first on the team in PER, first in TS%, first in WS/40, and first in BPM.

That probably translates to being the most valuable player on the team.

Lampkin!

Or, Donnie comes back when he’s healthy & we dip into the portal for an SEC center that better fits our system (looking at you, Estrella) to play alongside him next year. He gets a big bag from ‘Melo & Co. & raises his draft stock right here in ‘Cuse.

I am pretty sure I read someplace that Estrella came back from injury then re-injured his foot and went out and had season-ending foot surgery. Not sure I would count on him to be our center but big men with foot problems seem to be our MO.

OPP, you hit the nail on the head with your comment. This is the problem with Red; he has no system on offense or defense. ISO ball is not a system, especially in today’s modern basketball with three-point shooters all over the court.
I’ll say this. I haven’t had sympathy for Autry most of this season and early on. I didnt think he deserved much given his roster choices and not being ready to play in November.

The last ND game I did though.

I don’t think the players know who is going to show up to play. Expecting any system or rhythm is out the window.

My theory is that the only thing Autry has figured out this year besides parking Carlos and Bell on the bench is that this team stinks at running any kinds of plays out of timeouts and media breaks. They usually turn in to bad shots late in the clock, best to just clear space for JJ and hope he gets there or someone else gets a good putback.

Still cashes the NIL dough. Pretty sweet deal.
Kind of like Dak Prescott getting his NIL money while not playing.
You really need to research what NIL is and isn’t.
Maybe you should gripe that he still gets to attend classes even though he isn’t playing. Thats the deal SU made with him.

People will gas up JJ, JC and Eddie and then because Donnie may sit out the season for his own well-being, basically call him a walk on.

Like good lord.

We’ve sucked for 10 years with Red on the bench for all 10 of those years. With the injury excuse this year, I still think he’ll get a third year, but it’ll be a disaster again next year.

I hate to say it because Red seems like a great guy and a loyal alum, but he’s not the right coach to lead the orange resurgence. We have one good recruiter on staff but everybody else can leave.
This team has not sucked for 10 years. There is no reason to make the situation look worse than it is.
It already looks bad enough without all these exaggerations of our level of long term suckiness.

In 2016, we made the freakin final four with a 23-14 record.
In 2018, we made the sweet sixteen with a 23-14 record.
In 2021, we made the sweet sixteen with an 18-10 record.

I am as upset as anyone how bad this team is this year but no need to make the past worse than it was.

How about below average trending downwards?

2016 was 8 years ago. The last time SU was ranked during conference play was 2015. In that same time frame Loyola of Illinois had a final four, one fewer tournament appearances (10, 8, 11 seed compared to SU's 11, 8, 11, 10 seeds), and has been ranked during conference play more recently (2022).

Sweet 16s are great, but every game we played was as an underdog and we won a few with legit amazing shooting performances. In 2021, we shot 50% from three for the first two games (29/58) compared to a season average of 34% and then ran into a real defense and shot 21%.

Our system is not having a system. Systems are for nerds. Sorry.
Thanks for making me laugh Finally some humor on this board full of armchair QBs.

People can complain all they want for no offense but we all watched NC State go to the final 4 last year with no system. I watched UNC with RJ Davis and Cadeau lose at home to Stanford after our game. They are doing the same things we do only with the best guards in the league so what’s their excuse.

Don’t get me wrong I’d like to see some sort of offensive flow but the reality is that most teams win just by limiting turnovers getting good shot selection and then having shooters all over the court with a solid big man inside.

This argument again ha. There’s gotta be some sort of record for how many times this has been brought up on these boards.

I still hang my hat on the final 4’s. There have been near 0 coaches/teams in the real tournament that have made 2 final 4’s in 4 years time. Thinking back 2013 and 2016 I’m not sure I even realized how special those years were and how impossible it is now days with the parity in basketball now to see those kinds of tourney runs.

It has been trending downwards for the last 5 years but I dont think you can say last year was below average. They did win 20 games.

Fact of the matter is some of us have become so damn used to excellence that they can sneer at those 2 sweet sixteen rounds.

Maybe the disaster that this has been this year is some kind of karmic payback to those sneering fans.
And those who took what Boeheim brought to the court each and every game for granted.

Sweet sixteens take work.
Boeheim spoiled us by finding a way in the last years to take low level talent and have it perform above expectations when the games counted. He had a huge body of basketball knowledge.
Autry has not proved that he has the ability to do that.
If he can, the tide will change because he can certainly recruit.

so you calling the planets nerds ? they all gotta system . and that system revolves around the sun. unfortunately for syracuse the sun is a big black hole and the epitome of orbital and gravitational suckyness.

Because its accurate and true. Everything I posted is 100% verifiably true. It's great that we won a few games in the tournament when we squeaked in, but it wasn't evidence of sustainable success and the school's record bears that out.

We have been a bubble team or out for every season except one since 2014-15. The only year we were a lock was in 2019, an 8-seed who lost to Baylor in the 8-9 game. That is 10 of 11 years of regular season futility. We have never won more than 1 game in the ACCT. Unacceptable. The program is broken.

I didn’t say you were inaccurate. What I said is true too tho. There are how many schools and coaches that put their teams in 2 final 4’s over 5 years and almost all those coach’s are gone. Considering the portal and NIL even more unlikely to happen now.

So, since we were a bubble team for our last final four and last sweet sixteens, that means we were not a good team? How many locked in teams choked in the NCAA and didn't even win their first and second round games?
When it counted in the NCAA tournament, our teams under Boeheim performed.

And I dare say, there are a hell of a lot of teams out there who would happily take a final four and two sweet sixteens in the last 8 years.

Happy to be here is not the goal for a program like Syracuse. I'm sure that there probably about 300 of them. Teams like Loyola of Illinois. We are not them. 150-ish teams have never been ranked. ever. in their history.

I have the argument every year as my same friend picks Gonzaga to win a Natty. They never will despite their endless #1 rankings and West coast tourney wins.

Personally, after 2016 is where I draw the demarcation line between "great program" and "systemic decline".

The 2015-16 team was, IMHO, a very good team that underachieved in the regular season. Some of that may have been because Hopkins coached 9 games to a lousy 4-5 clip.

It was after that season that the inarguable decline began. So I don't lump, say, the 2021 sweet 16 in with the 2016 final 4. They were in distinctly different eras IMHO.
