Donnie Freeman injures foot

I hope DF heals up and comes back stronger than ever. Wish he had more games under his belt this season.

I hope he comes back, because we would be better for it. But he has a long ways to go, if we want to actually be a good team again.

Will Melo fund a roster that has Kiyan playing spot duty and very limited minutes? And all parties will be happy?
I have my doubts this is gonna work.
My thought too. If we want to be good next year, Kiyan is probably playing 15 minutes off the bench. Is Melo really going to dish out millions to bury his son on the depth chart? Kiyan's a really nice player but he's not a freshman you start and build around like Cooper Flagg.

would have been nice to see how a healthy donnie freeman matched up with flagg .
btw looked to me anyways like cooper hit his head pretty hard on the floor after going to the deck once. seemed a bit woozey and bruisey afterward .

It’s simple. The SEC has given the country the blue print. If you want to win you better invest big time in NIL. If you want to beat Duke, you better spend $7-8 million in getting recruits and portal kids. $2-3 million will get what we’re currently seeing at SU. Red was correct in his press conference. College basketball is not the same as it was when SU was last good in 2014. The game has changed dramatically. Even Davis at North Carolina, just this week said they will finally hire a GM. The name on the jersey will no longer get you players. It’s all about the money. Either you get it and spend it or you will be a non factor moving forward. The competition to get high quality portal kids this spring is going to be fierce.

Just think, we’ve lost our three best returning players the last three years to the portal. We lost Edwards, Girard and Brown. We aren’t competitive. The guys we brought in last year seem to be good kids, but who did we fight off to get them? We’re currently not competitive in the portal. Jay Williams is a jerk, but he was correct last night. SU has to invest big time in getting better talent. This spring will tell us a lot by who we try to bring in by the portal. A good freshman class is not enough. Unless you get several top 15 kids, you’re not winning with freshman on a consistent basis. Season ticket holders should be watching.

A lot of similarities between Cuse and UNC and I'd argue both are the result of stubborn mismanagement.

Fans were arguing for a GM 2 years ago. It took us until last August to hire one.

Both schools have seen their best players regress. There's been little to no improvement from the guys they have brought in.

NIL can and should be better, but again that is a result of terrible management of the program. We are late at reacting. UNC has been too. It's very comparable to the decline of any business. Slow to react to the changes in the market.

The disconcerting thing is that it's taken Autry 2 years to realize that he needs more NIL and a better approach to acquiring players.

You'd think the guy who was the top assistant on the team for a dozen years would have known those were day 1 priorities.

But hey, if we can fix those things then all he needs to do is figure out how to coach offense and defense!

Knowing what the priorities are and having the clout to do something is two different things. SU was one of the early schools to invest in a GM. Red didn’t know JB was going to be let go. This last off season is the first year that he’s had a chance to really recognize what needs to be done. This off season will be a make it or break it time for Red. He can’t just have a good portal class. It has to be a difference maker portal class. We‘ll see if the investment is there in evaluations and funding.

Indiana and Rutgers spent big on talent and they're not good.

I have zero faith in the coaching staff to execute regardless of the talent level. Who cares if we have $7m invested in players who are standing around watching JJ shoot right-handed on drives to his left.
If we get talent you won’t see JJ.

We'll do the right thing when no other mistakes are left to be made.

Until then, we just need to keep kicking at the legs on the table and chairs.

Eventually, all the planks will be flat on the floor to start the rebuild.

We're on 3 legs on the furniture already.

My biggest fear is that Syracuse booster fork over the 7-8 million to Red and he blows it because he can't coach. Then we let him go and hire a real coach and the booster never want to give that amount of money again even though it would be put to better use this time around. I feel we have one shot to show the booster it is worth it like Fran did and if we fail it will be hard to get it back.

If Fran went out with his hand out and said he needed more for X player I bet he gets it because of last season.

I don't know. Autry knew he was highly likely to be Boeheim's replacement. He should have been building his strategic plan for the program long before March 2023.

It reminds me of my Patriots. Jerrod Mayo was contractually named the head-coach-in-waiting 2 years before he got the job. But it sure seemed like he did next to nothing to prepare for being HC during that time.

Red's day one strategy seemed to be to get the guys he recruited previously to transfer in. And then spray and pray on other additions.
He clearly had zero NIL plan, as evidenced by this past summer's Mea Culpa, I Actually Do Need Your Money tour.

There's just nothing about his tenure that strikes me as proactive, strategic, bold or innovative. We're always behind, and he owns that IMHO.

Wow, what a rational post. I am so thankful and I trust red will stay true to himself and not throw anybody under the bus. I’m so proud of that. We were not ready Sort of compete or die on all realms.

Can you actually know and verify what happened during the transition? Without much insider information I strongly say in my opinion, it was a shamble and a mess. The last seven years, ridiculously hard to know exactly what was going to happen in the next minute with what I believe only for thought For self I will say no more

Wasn't SU the last school in America to keep mask .
Didn't Jim hate the Dome and the ACC
We've always been extremely conservative and late to react .

Our problem is we always have too many "ifs". If Bennys is good. If Copeland matures. If Bell finds a complete game. If Freeman is the next Melo. If a oversees point guard comes to America and is ready day 1. And IF Petar comes along If Freeman comes back If our other two freshman are ready to play If we get a top flight center If we actually get Melo money.

We always pile all these IFs up and when the IFs don't happen then they just lead to excuses.
There are ifs with most every team in America especially in the portal era. But yeah, our ifs have really grown every off-season the past few years.

Well he still moved in so shrug.

Manley used to hold 9,000+.

JB thought that he'd be lucky to draw 12,000 fans in the Dome, and it would look empty.

Not the first time he was wrong.

I'll also add (since I looked it up) that we've had 5 freshmen contribute meaningfully in the past 9 seasons:

Battle
Brissett
Girard
Mintz
Freeman

That's the list. Basically one every other year.

But we're going to have 2 next year? Doubtful.
You missed a few. Kadary, first and foremost. Tyler Lydon and Malachi Richardson. Quincy Guerrier, once he got healthy. I’d also argue Buddy, who was the key bench piece to the second half of the 2018-19 season (he started out slowly but caught fire by January).

I agree that the program has been in a constant state of chaos since Jim Boeheim’s second major probation.

I don’t think anyone was surprised that Autry was JB’s replacement, though. He had been talked about as being the HCIW.

Autry was also our lead recruiter and knew full well about the portal, the emergence of NIL, and all that stuff. That it took him 15 months to more directly approach “friends” for NIL money is a colossal whiff on his part. That it took 2 portal cycles to realize he needed a GM is another example of a lack of strategic decision making.

It just blows my mind that he’s a full 2 years into the job and just now does he seem to have the infrastructure in place to deal with the dynamics of the sport that pre-date his elevation to HC.

There’s a head coach of another sport down the hall who recognized all this stuff in day on of his tenure.

If you are talking about JAB and/or the school administration, the answer is yes, and yes.

However, JAB was his own boss, and used his own analytics to win 1116 games. And his sysyem worked, until the game changed, and he didn't chsnge with it, and then his system didn't work any more.

And, of course, the school was late to react.

But basketball is the "easiest" of any sport to fix. But, it comes down to who is going to fix it. Melo? Red? Wildhack? Alex Kline? The new revenue guy? Other boosters?

Just follow what Pitino has done at St John's. Or follow what Fran Brown has done at Syracuse.

Hopefully Wildhack is having these conversations with people. And, hopefully Syverud is having this conversation with Wildhack.
