Donnie Freeman Injury Updates (Still Out)

I get it, You, like some others, donn think Autry can coach. He won 20 games his first year coming off the end of the Boeheim era. Last year he was handed a weak roster due to limited NIL funds and coached half of the year without his heralded freshman. We’ll never know what would have happened in Vegas if Freeman was healthy. So I can’t judge Red until I see him play with a full deck. Folks who think he won’t be back next year if SU misses the tourney (likely at this point) are sadly mistaken.
We don’t run plays. 3yrs and no tournament and endless blowout losses. You want to sit through another year of this? 99% of us don’t

Last year's poor performance was maybe worsened by NIL issues but when you're barely getting by the le moynes of the world, that's an indictment on the coaching. As for the "full deck" if that was an excuse then no one would ever get fired. Damn near every team in the nation losses key peices for some portion of the season and many lose them for the year as well. The difference is they actually adjust to deal with it versus just throwing the same broken strategy out week after week.

I will believe the insiders who are clear that no tournament this year and Red is gone. If JW doesnt do it, im sure the BoT will bring in someone who will.

I'm not an insider, but this could come down to a Syverud and BOT decision. And what I mean, is that is Syracuse University ever going to commit SEC type money to run real Top 25 programs.

Look how much these football factories are not only paying their new hire coaches, but also how many tens of millions they are on the hook for to make their coaches they are firing go away. Basketball money is not football money, but I'm sure the SEC is paying probably double or triple or more of what Red is making. Or what the next Cuse head coach will make.

Is there anyone on this forum that believes that Cuse can get back to the glory days with what they are willing to pay head coaches and assistant coaches?

NIL money is a totally different animal, and yes you have to bring in the Dawgs, but all I ever read about is how the assistant coaches for hoops, football, lacrosse, etc.are terrible. It changes with the season, but their heads are on the chopping block all the time.

Lunardi has seven ACC schools dancing in his latest bracketology. How hard is it to be one of those seven schools?

Red is gone if he doesn’t make the tournament. He was always getting 3 years. Now others are suddenly moving the goalposts.

What would it take for you to acknowledge the coaching isn’t at an acceptable level? The staff banging a married family relative?
I also love the line of thinking that essentially says the coach really doesn’t do anything, it’s all about the players executing (this is obviously an exaggeration but also sure, players are more important) but also says well obviously you can’t fire the coach!

If all that really matters is the players then why is it so important to keep the coach??

No, you don't. The players will just have to sign a disclosure waiver, like the "pro" athletes do.
I don’t think HIPAA even applies to colleges. Pretty sure it’s a lot less encompassing than generally believed.

Yes, but will Syracuse be willing to hire someone with the proper winning pedigree that they can afford.

What will it take to get Matt Langel? He might not have wanted to replace a legend, but replacing the guy who replaced the legend might be more palatable.

Here are some salaries from last year. How much will Cuse stretch the budget? Just do the math if a winning team can average 25,000 fans. That's a lot of cheetos.

100% we can be a major player in basketball again, its not that expensive to do so. The idea that we will ever compete in football over the longterm is silly but basketball is easy. Infact, dare i say we would be doing it if we had hire literally ANYONE with some experience as a head coach. The problem with syracuse basketball right now is not money, its Red. Red is not a good coach. Its why JB wanted G-mac and why Red was never hired as a HC anywhere else. Syracuse in the new millennium should've never been a proving grounds for a coach. That was stupid.

Some of the guys on that list near the bottom are bargains. I’d take Shaheen Holloway in a heartbeat.

Hey Cliftonpark... our next coach is in your backyard.

He was going to get fired before the good start to this season. They really only beat NC ST, who may be more avg than we thought. We are still Syracuse. Our next hire should still be a little better than Holloway imo.

I love it. Red just the innocent victim of circumstances beyond his control. He was handed a bad roster! What was he to do? Certainly you can’t fault the head coach for the players that end up on his team!

Boeheim was just lucky all those years and then unlucky in the final ~5 or so!

For a the millions of dollars they make you’d think they’re only duties are to show up on game days and look good in a suit (they don’t even do this anymore!)

agreed, why does these coaches make millions if all they do is look pretty on the bench

Yup. We didn’t have enough NIL season before last because Red wasn’t prepared to fundraise for the necessary amount. Lots of people have confirmed this. He thought we were fine, and the staff didn’t do nearly enough homework to determine differently during the 2023-24 season.

I mean, while Red’s staff was flailing at NIL, the guy down the hall coaching the other revenue sport loaded up enough $$$ to sign several premiere players.

My disappointment is with Nait George. He doesn’t seem to be the playmaker we thought he was. He’s definitely talented but he seems to defer way too much. We need a leader at point guard to call plays, have much less iso and more control from the point guard position to create opportunities with the talent surrounding him. I don’t know whether it’s chemistry or some defiance within his teammate’s games. I was really looking forward to his ability to be a playmaker, creator but he seems stymied in his role here unfortunately. Hoping to see some development and improvement in showing his talent with this group. Also Freeman is a huge loss. LGO!

The chancellor is already on his way out. He’s not making any decisions. The new chancellor is being hired now for next spring.

People should be watching that decision instead of JW. The new person may even be less invested in sports and take us even further down the path to irrelevance. JW is 67 and has had his run and will likely be on his way out soon.

The BoT seems invested in sports as in they talk a big game but also more invested in not sticking their neck and keeping their job.
