Don't look now but Chesney is 7-1

To be fair at the time a lot of people were all aboard the gimmick up tempo offense. I remember the first couple plays of the first series, guys were sprinting to their position after the ball carrier was tackled. Looking back it's a bit crazy now, but it was a gimmick that worked, and people adjusted leaving the program with an apparent Briles protege that didn't come close to running that offense. That Briles offense was peak 2010's CFB.
As I think back on it everything about Dino was a gimmick, Arizona just figured it out long before we did.

I think JMU is a great program but SOS is at least worth mentioning.

After all Fran hasn't lost to a non P4 team and JMUs only loss this Year is to the only P4 team they've played

The measure of a coach should be what he does at his level with his schedule. If you have a class D football school dominating class D you're not gonna measure their staff and their program against a class A program.

JMU is not a P4 team, SU is.

Cheney also had to replace 50 players on his roster due to the portal and NIL. Dino didn’t, apples to oranges. Dino made a habit of taking over built rosters for 2 seasons then jumping ship. After his first two at Syracuse which were rough he had a 10 win season with Dungey and the wheels proceeded to fall off.
OK. If Chesney goes 5-7 next year I'm guessing there won't be a thread about it. People are just lashing out like children.

Sure seemed like you were stating it to make some kind of point. We all know he is at a G5 school, it didn’t need to be said.
It kind of does G5 is not as hard as p5, and James Madison has had a track record last few years as a better g5 team. More ready built for success.

The track record was not part of the original comment. So not relevant to my responses.

As far as G5 not being as hard to win at in general, I doubt that’s correct. Sure your strength of schedule is less than a P4 schedule, but you have G5 resources and mostly G5 players. If it was easier to win in G5, most G5 teams have winning records, which seems not likely.

When a coach is successful at one level and unsuccessful after moving to another, how should he be judged?

Fair enough, just think this thread undersells how consistently good JMU have been and perhaps McCord made us forgot how good we hadn't been. If we play JMU 10 times would be curious the results.

We're light on upperclass talent as result. Watching Chestnut get absolutely punked on that 72 yard TD run kind of cemented that BUT underclassmen are talented albeit raw. Maybe we'll be as consistent as JMU in a year or 2

Chesney is a very good coach but we made the right call with Fran. We would be a bowl team this year with Angeli, after losing McCord, Allen, OG, Meeks, Peña, Barron, Diggs, Wax. Freaking boatload of production and upperclassman leadership. This season is a dumpster fire but I am staying on the Fran train, 10 wins in year one at this program isn’t something minor, or lucky, or whatever nonsense the bandwagoners are spewing now

More than a bowl team. Schedule wasn’t as hard as predicted *with Steve*

Fran has delivered on improved recruiting and he was able to get a generational QB in McCord who was a successful P4 transfer QB. Angeli, in my opinion, is another great get. But, there is something lacking with coaching if Syracuse has to start a walk on lacrosse player at QB.

Chesney is a proven winner, like Cignetti. He has won at 4 schools and he has one losing season, his first at Holy Cross in which he went 5-6. JMU was decimated with transfers when Cignetti took his best players with him to Indiana, but Chesney was able to cobble together a roster and went 9-4. He is 127-57 overall and 91-23 against conference opponents. He would have been a great hire at Syracuse, but Fran brings recruiting chops, but he has to improve his coaching staff.

I think Chesney will be hired by a P4 this year and schools, especially BC, will look back and wonder why they didn't hire him.

Always figured he would wind up at BC. Probably will after BOB flames out.

I'm curious... how many 5 and 4 stars would Chesney sign? You can hire good ops and process guys, but if the talent isn't there then it doesn't matter how good the ops and process are. Fran will succeed or fail based on fixing the ops/process stuff. But his ceiling is playoffs once ever several years... unfortunately because of the ops stuff his floor is also 3 win seasons when it all goes wrong.

Does Chesney have the same ceiling? He definitely doesn't have the same floor.
