While I am all for player safety and understand that life goes on beyond football; Cuse has been disqualifying players d/t concussions the last few years. The university is very hush on the process and protocol , thus leaving room for speculation. I work in healthcare and am looking for some help here. Is it normal staffing for a P5 program to only use a primary physician to make these calls ALONE? There are specialties in physiatry and sports med and neurologists that some schools utilize. Can't help but think this guy is a bit in over his head and out of his comfort zone, thus being ultra conservative to cover his butt. Just seems that a medical committee and/or a team of specialists might be more advantageous .

How does CFB get away with disclosing any medical. Is a HIPAA release part of the scholarship?

I think they said he has the final say - but I imagine not the only say. I would think he consults with experts, sends players to specialists for testing and evaluations - then he makes the final decision based on all their input.

Guy on message board thinks a doctor is in over his head. We've officially entered the twilight zone.

The fact that you don't think a neurologist or concussion expert is better qualified to decide whether to medically disqualify someone is what I find puzzling. The guy lists Obstetrics and Gynecology as his specialties on his website. Do you really think this is ok? I guess it's great if one of the guys gets knocked up though.

I would certainly hope that Dr. Tucker is soliciting advice from and deferring to neurologists, otherwise it is completely and utterly asinine to have him make the final call on concussion cases. There is a reason that God invented specialists. I can't imagine it not being the case, the school doesn't want to lose players and sure as hell doesn't want to be sued, so I am sure the good OB is doing just that.

Be assured an expert(s) is doing the heavy lift of real evaluation.

Just a discussion and if the university is gonna be super private about the process and people involved, then that allows us to speculate. thats all it is. alot of programs are more open in disclosing the process. no big deal, just pecking around for info.

With all due respect to Finwad and others, it's funny how some claim Dr. Tucker is the only doctor involved. Moreover, his only qualifications are as a family doc and a gyno. Seriously? He may have the final say, but it's obvious experts on each specific situation provide analysis. There are adults in the administration (right?) ... But kids/families should definitely be allowed to get a second opinion - as an appeal or confirmation - before a final decision is made.

SU has no responsibility to tell a reporter anything about a player's injury, the doctor they use, or how their concussion protocol works.

You literally said that a doctor wasn't qualified for his job without any background information besides 1. he works for the team and 2. he's not a neurologist.

No other program is more open about "disclosing the process", and if they are, provide links.

What seems to be the trouble Eric?

It's my head and neck.

All the way up there huh? Well, in that case, this might hurt a little.

I guess you didn't read the article on the PS site that interviewed AJ Long and Arciniega about the process. Long said he was medically disqualified by Dr. Tucker before he was even able to schedule a second opinion.

Ok...

I'll take this guy.....

Or this...

Even these guys have dedicated concussion people on staff......

Notice a trend? I'll help out, these people are all specialized in sports medicine, not family practice ob/gyn.

Did read it, but hard to tell the deal with AJ without knowing the full story. There must have been good reasons for the final decision to be quick and absolute. And it is the school's right to protect itself and the kid, if they feel it's the right decision. That AJ got subsequently cleared is important, but kind of meaningless. They (Dr. Tucker) clearly felt there was ample evidence not to take further risks.

None taken, I have no idea on the Dr end. My thoughts hinge mainly on, "if" that's true.

All I see is family practice/orthopedics on those staffs. And a bunch of trainers, which doesn't require a PH.D.

Not to mention, of the three links you posted, none of the actual doctors on those staffs are neurologists...

The "Concussion Specialist" at RU isn't even a doctor! So I'd say our OB/GYN is probably more qualified to handle concussions.

What good reason could there be to make a final decision quickly without taking ample time to explore all options? What harm could come from shutting him down for a period that would allow for other medical opinions, particularly from a brain specialist before making a final decision that impacts a young man's life? Unless, of course, they weren't concerned about the young man, but about something else.

Oh, wow, the people that work with the Doctor think he's qualified to do his job! I can't believe it!
Hmmmmmm..."I think we feel comfortable with him." Not exactly a ringing endorsement. Think we feel? How about something like the Dr. is extremely qualified and we lucky to have him as part of our staff. See the difference? Obviously you are comfortable with our family doctor and I am not. See I don't just automatically trust Drs. After I tore my meniscus sliding into homeplate, I went to the doctor and described my pain. I told him it was an acute injury as the result of playing sports, described sliding into the plate, told him there was no initial pain but as soon as I tried to stand up I almost fell over. He did an xray, I got a call from the nurse stating his diagnosis was arthritis and I should relieve any discomfort with Motrin. I even said to the nurse..."Arthritis from an acute sports injury?" in complete disbelief and her response was 'that's what the dr has written here'. Needless to say, I haven't been back to that quack, and Dr. Battaglia took good care of me. Keep in mind this was a doctor with 20+ years of experience. I went to a specialist and had it properly taken care of.

Did you listen to the interview? Things always look different when transcribed.
